In July 2024, I took a ferry from Harwich UK, to Holland, then jumped on a night train to get to Switzerland. I picked my bike and camping gear and set off for a week. I met up with a friend then set off along Lake Geneva. I fatally bent my front wheel in a silly crash on a steep hill on day 2 and needed to wait in Vevey for a few days to get a replacement. My phones camera randomly stopped working (likely due to the crash) but started to work intermittently during the week. Once I replaced the wheel I headed for Fribourg then on to Bern. I made it all the way to Solothern before jumping on a train to get over the mountain pass to Basel.
Lots of hills, and I went very slowly stopping a lot to take it all in. I swam in many rivers and lakes, and camped every night. I didn’t wild camp because it was difficult to find good spots, but surprisingly campsites were relatively cheap. Everything else in Switzerland seemed quite expensive. Especially train travel with a bike.
I’d like to return with an e-bike next time. Some of the hills I encountered were just too gnarly for a fully loaded bike. But overall it was one of the best cycle tours I’ve ever done.
I managed 300km+/-
