Aigues-Mortes is a fascinating medieval town located in the Camargue region of southern France. Founded in 1240 by King Louis IX, it was originally established as a port to provide France with direct access to the Mediterranean Sea. The town’s name, which means “dead waters” in French, refers to the surrounding marshlands and salt flats that have shaped its unique landscape and history.
The most striking feature of Aigues-Mortes is its remarkably well-preserved fortifications. The town is encircled by an imposing wall nearly 1.6 kilometers long, punctuated by 20 towers and 10 gates, offering a glimpse into the military architecture of the Middle Ages. The Constance Tower, a massive round tower within the walls, once served as a royal prison and now provides panoramic views of the surrounding marshes and salt pans.
Aigues-Mortes played a significant role in the Crusades, serving as the departure point for Louis IX’s seventh and eighth crusades. Its strategic importance declined over time as the coastline receded, but the town’s historical and architectural heritage has been meticulously preserved.
