Southampton Driving Test Route 3, Southampton Driving Test Route 4 and Southampton Driving Test Route 4 are similar test routes with slight variation on each. It is important to watch all three of these test routes together to provide you a better understanding.
The purpose of this video is to help you understand how the driving test works and how to pass your driving test, hopefully first time. This video is focused on a Southampton Maybush driving test centre. This is test route number 4

[Music] hi and welcome to drive and explores YouTube channel my name is Amma I’m an ADI and approved driving instructor based here in Southampton the purpose of these videos is to educate Learners how to conduct themselves during a test exactly which lane you need to be in an approach your roundabout why you need to be in that lane when you’re going to Signal when you’re going to check your mirrors these are actual test routes that our Learners were taken on during their test so we were sat in the back we saw exactly what was happening what the examiner’s feedback was so we just want to help as many Learners as we can get you guys on the road so we’re covering Southampton maybush Leon Solen Winchester all the surrounding areas please check the description in uh which test center uh the test up let me know what you think of the videos how I could do anything better as well without any further Ado let’s get to the video um for Southampton maybush test center this was done on navigation the start of the test was done on navigation I’ll tell you exactly where it was switched off again the satinav will be put on silent and it will be done as a commentary Drive um you if you’re watching it on a larger screen you will be able to see the navigation properly um but it should be um clear enough hopefully fingers crossed let me know if you can’t see the navigation clearly and I’ll think about positioning it somewhere else or maybe having a little screen down the bottom just for the navigation okay so let’s start this off we’re in an automatic car again foot on brake doing my palm routine putting the car into drive now Sixpoint check my pavement is on my left hand side so I’m going to start from my first blind spot and I’m working my way around so one two three 4 five six handbrake down signal right right wing mirror over my shoulder at the end of the road I’m going to be turning right checking my main mirror main mirror right mirror signal right slowing down matching up my wing mirror with the line making sure I don’t go over those of you that have come down to maybush test center know that visibility is restricted if you can’t see clearly use your body lean forward and have a good look main mirror at the end of this road there is signs that say going anywhere else it will be 30 turning right or left so main mirror left mirror signal left positioning myself slowing down clear scanning the RO for any potential problems main mirror check for anything behind me at the roundabout I’ll be taking third exit so just looking at the roundabout sign now it’s after 12:00 so main mirror right mirror signaling right positioning myself more towards uh white line but staying on my side of the road coming off the accelerator slowing down Main mirror breaking I’m going to look over to mors my right checking if I need to go way glancing over as many times as I can to make an informed decision getting straight on on the inside signal got canceled reapplying make sure you count your exits that’s one second exit main row left for Signal left I’m moving over taking my foot off the accelerator concentrating on my steering first cancel signal main mirror check next round about third exit main mirror right mirror signal right mirrors un signal before I’ve moved over making sure it’s safe slowing down looking over to my right to see if I need to give any on way getting on when it’s safe to do so counting the exits that’s my first this roundabout is more Square than round signal will get canceled reapplying it for right main mirror left mirror signal left coming straight over now I’m not canceling my signal until I’m fully off the roundabout cancelled main mirror and breaking approaching this slow because it is a medium roundabout I can see that car in front of me signaling right so I’ve got to give him priority taxi not signaling main mirror left mirror signal left as soon as I’m straight signal gets canceled main mirror next roundabout is a mini roundabout approaching speed should be 5 miles hour so main mirror breaking looking if I need to give anyone way no there is no signal for a mini roundabout for going straight you don’t need to Signal left to come off that’s only for big and medium roundabouts because mini roundabouts the area is quite small so the next roundabout is a mini roundabout again I’ll be turning left so I’ve come off my accelerator main mirror left mirror breake signaling breaking glancing over towards my right to see if I need to give any on way the beauty of it is if you’re slow enough you can look over three times and you won’t even need to stop and you can go for the accelerator again if needed the next roundabout is a medium roundabout and it’s asking me to loop around so for exit main mirror right mirror signal right slowing down looking if I need to give any on way first exit second exit and Main mirror left mirror signal left and moving over cancel signal because there is a road here main mirror for new road new mirrors I can’t stress how important this roundabout Loop is there is a bicycle on my right hand side so if I do want to overtake him I’ve got to give him 2 m of space I’ll be turning right second exit main mirror right mirror signal right slowing down because I can’t see what’s coming around from my right now I’ve got a better View just tap the accelerator once come off it turning straight main mirror the next roundabout is a mini roundabout I can’t see again what’s coming from my right so I’m just going to come off the accelerator main mirror break in checking if I need to give anyone way now that vehicle’s not signaling so I was being cautious reason being because they could come around towards my right not everyone does signal they should but your safety is in your hands ultimately as well next round by is a medium main mirror slowing down looking over to my right on my earliest opportunity seeing if I need to give anyone way the answer is yes I’m stopping and I’m planning head so I’m going straight across here second exit main mirror left mirror signaling left cancel in my signal next roundabout I’ll be taking third exit main mirror right mirror signal right slowing down reapply my signal if your signal gets canceled you got to reapply it first exit second exit main mirror left mirror signal left moving over still on the roundabout cancel signal main mirror check slowing down because there is another roundabout coming up and I’ll be taking second exit no signal for second exit on approach you signal for main mirror left mirror signal left you signal left after the first exit to let people know that you’re coming off at the next exit the new speed limit is 40 so main mirror as the speed has changed just be mindful CU that silver car is coming in the two lanes become one and be mindful of the bus as well so going back to those roundabouts if you’re taking first exit the first exit is normally on your let’s just say it’s on your left so it’ be main mirror left miror signal left for your first exit because you’re coming off straight away and you stay in the outside Lane second exit as you saw there I did there was no signal because if I signaled it looked like I taking first exit so you go past the first exit check main mirror left mirror signal left just after first exit just to let people know you’re coming off for third exit you change at your second exit so just after second exit on the approach you get your mirrors out the way to see what’s happening behind you see if the car behind you is coming in quite close or what’s going on check your left mirror to make sure it’s safe to move over if it’s not safe to move over reapply your signal for right carry on going around but if you are able to if it is safe and you can move over check your mirror signal left before your tire touches a line move over towards uh left hand lane and the next exit will be your third so let’s just say for argument sake I was going to take my 10th exit on the roundabout hypothetically speaking I would for the 10th exit I would change at the 9th because after the 9th the next exit would be mine I will make another video um on that in due course so the whole syllabus will be uploaded speed change into 30 so main mirror check now there’s two lanes that are going straight when there’s two lanes that go straight you always choose the left of the two options so main mirror left mirror signal left moving over canceling signal breaking giving the car in front tire and time mainor now you can see the floor markings of two lanes that merge in so just make check in my right mirror make sure there’s no motorbikes going downhill so there’s zero accelerator if anything I’m checking my main mirror to see who’s behind me I’m breaking just to control the car now you can already see that in 600 yards as roundabout I’ll either whatever exit it is I’ll know I lean to turn right you can see that on the screen there this route in particular isn’t one of my favorite routes I don’t like this route because it’s got the Winchester Road roundabout which I will go into detail in another video because it’s quite a tricky one it’s a larger round rout that leads into a mini roundabout or a mini roundabout that leads on to a larger roundabout now I can see the roundabout sign there there only looks like three exits so my exit is the second exit on the right on approach main mirror right mirror signaling right slowing down and just checking on my right hand side to see who’s signaling towards the um their left because I won’t need to give them way those that aren’t signaling we’ll be going straight into sports center their second exit now I know this route like the back of my hand so I know it’s asking me to take second exit straight across now those of you that are doing roundabouts will be like I need to be in this Middle Lane it’s actually the right hand lane you can take second exit either from this Lane here left or this one here however ever if you look at the satnav now what does it say what you going to do at the next roundout you’re going to be going down Hill Lane so if you look I’ll try going over slowly if if you’re in this L it’s deemed that you’re either going if you’re not signaling you’re going straight otherwise you’re taking third exit another thing that a lot of you do is just look over to the right so don’t just look over to the right look at who’s going to stop them so who are who’s on their right who are they giving way to so I can now see as soon as that to signal right so he be coming around and then after that there’s no one else that they need to give way to so no one else is going to stop them so that corser looks like it’s going to be going straight so as soon as that corser leaves that’s when I’m going to leave see what I mean how I end up in this Lane I’ve got to giveway to my right that Su car will wait for me now it is quite tricky going around the mini roundabout and then you’ve got a zebra Crossing as well be in mind for the lady main mirror breaking cuz it is 20 down heal Ling I’ll be taking the next turn on the right so main mirror right mirror and I’m breaking all the way down here just controlling it breaking gently siging right matching up my wing mirror coming in scanning the road first new road new mirrors taking my second turn on my okay apparently main mirror left mirror signal left that lady was just telling me there was glass on the floor hopefully we’re all right until the end of this video here new road new mirrors it is quite windy so you probably see a lot of the bins turned over and you got those little gray um buckets for glass as well so a lot of them have fling onto the road at the end of the road in 200 yards I’ll be turning left main mirror left mirror moving over towards the left slowing down checking in front safe checking my right mirror main mirror left mirror coming around that car signaling left slowing down positioning my car towards the left just turning my steering wheel a little bit which will assist me in turning looking over my new road new mirrors remembering this is still all a 20 20 should feel slow I can see the traffic lights are read so there’s no points speeding towards a main mirror check I’m not accelerating at all just breaking cuz I’ve got to give that car in front to and T I’ll be turning right at the traffic light so main mirror right mirror signal right I check my left mirror because there is a bike lane on my left just making sure there isn’t no bicycles again a lot of you when you turn down this road after that you guys will Ex um accelerate and go beyond 20 this is all still 20 there is repeaters down here but if you’ve missed the repeater you will speed up zebra cross in the Commons on our left so just check in my main mirror having a look over making sure there’s no one there at the next roundabout I’ll be going straight across main mirror left mirror cuz I’m going to get into says bicycle lane because my visibility is restricted and I want to give myself the best opportunity to have the most amount of visibility possible now I’m you I’m looking through those fences at the moment to plan ahead and see if I need to give anyone way on the right or if anyone’s actually approaching the roundabout it does look that there is so main rest slowing down looking at who they need to give way to there’s still a vehicle there that they need to give way to so I don’t actually need to stop that that’s the benefit of being slow so if you’re reducing your speed it gives you opportunity to see now that bike clean there solid that’s the reason why I didn’t go into it just after traffic lights I’ll be turning right so I’ll signal when I get a bit closer to a traffic light because you do have a Bowling Club on your right so it could look like I’m going into a car park main mirror right mirror signal right slowing down matching up my wing mirror making sure I giving priority to the vehicles in front unless I’ve got a safe Gap to go looking into a road as well at the same time making sure it’s safe to turn in main mirror right mirror because I’m going to get around this vehicle and giving those vehicles on my left at least a meter main mirror left mirror cuz I’m going to move back in after this vehicle I’ll be taking the next turn on my left so main mirror left mirror making sure my surroundings are safe signaling left slowing down as soon as my wing mirror gets underneath the curb turning in nice and slow scanning the road for it to be safe road safe so new road new mirrors main mirror check at the end of the road I can’t see what’s coming from the right or the left and I can see it’s a giveway line so I know it’s a junction it’s a closed Junction so main mirror and I’m going to be stopping looking right and left clear accelerate get me out of this situation enter new Rod so main mirror check at the end of the road I’ll be turning right again another closed Junctions those of you that have done open Junction close Junction if it’s open Junction you can do a rolling emerge on a close Junction because you can’t see you’ve got to stop main mirror cuz she’s a hazard main mirror right mirror signal right slowing down positioning myself towards the right of my white line the visibility of this road is restricted so just having a look over and using my body to move forward you got two choices either move forward and put yourself in the firing line or use your body move forward and save yourself from potentially getting into an accident that car in front of me is turning so it looks like we’re going to be doing near side to near side if we go the same time neither of us neither me or that Nissan in front have priority we’ve only got to give priority to those on the main road there’s a lot of traffic on the main road that’s nice of him he stopped for me thank you and just making sure I’m looking through the rare wind screen of that Nissan making sure it’s clear cuz had I gone past that car the Nissan when he did turn it could have caused me a problem for those vehicles that were oncoming main mirror check cuz I’m breaking now there is a zebra Crossing coming up I can’t see both sides of it so the last thing I want to do if someone walks out is slam my brakes and let the rare car going behind me so I checked my mam and I wasn’t really accelerating Max Speed I was doing about 10 mainor slowing down giving the vehicle in front tar and Tac handbrake for foot on break main mirror hand breake down I’m going to check M and I’m going to stop because that vehicle’s going to come around give him space the lights are red so main mirror gently breaking handbrake again scanning my so while I’m sat here I’m looking around and I’m checking my wing mirrors as well just let that cyclist come up it’s quite Sunny making sure there’s no other cyclist there’s a moped on my right H work down Main mirror checked just being wary of the moped but he’s turning right again this is all 20 M hour here whenever the Gap gets smaller we go slower so just slowing down Main mirror left mirror moving back over now is 20 all around here the vehicle behind me does seem frustrated but all because he seems frustrated and he doesn’t want to do 20 mil hour I can’t be breaking the law for him as long as you’re doing the speed limit and it’s safe to do the speed limit you’re not doing anything wrong it is annoying seeing cyclist go faster than me but it is what it is Main and left moving over now we’re coming up to a slip road on the left hand side there is a bus lane and we are going to be going downhill so I’ve taken my foot off the accelerator this slip rate is 20 M hour when we’re going to be joining the Dual C the Dual C is going to be 40 mil hour I’m checking my main mirror and I’m breaking CU I don’t want to go over the 20 mph speed limit this route here is a difficult one it’s not one of my favorites so the way to join the DU c main mer see what’s happening behind me right mirror signal right because that’s the side that we’re joining checking left mirror cuz just making sure there’s no buses on those two cyclist and now we can accelerate 40 right wi mirror over the shoulder making sure I’ve got a safe way to merg in cancel signal Main mirror so again get main mirror right mirror signal right in good time check your right wi mirror we call it kiss a parot so just literally having a look over your shoulder to make sure it’s safe how you know there’s a enough gap for you to join is if you can see a lot of timeat between you and the car the lane that you’re joining and seeing how quick that Gap obviously closes main mirror bearing in mind all because it’s 40 doesn’t mean everyone’s doing 40 some people might be doing 30 some people might be doing exceeding the speed limit once you’ve joined cancel your signal main mirror and if possible maintain the speed of the Dual Carri TR having a look making sure there’s no motorbikes filtering through the thing is the more you’re aware of your surroundings the better you can plan it’s like I PID that mot bik turn up right on Q now you guys I don’t know if you can see that there on the navigation because it is quite sunny and I’m not able to see my navigation at the moment clearly on my recording device but that sign there means you’re going to be taking the exit in about 800 yards on a your C always choose the left lane the left lane is your lane unless it comes off at an exit and you need to change Lane Middle R Middle Lane and right lane are designed for overtaking for main mirror accelerating now speed limit is 40 but I’m not able to reach 40 because I need to give the vehicle in in front enough space I don’t want to be bump Bumper to Bumper with him either cuz if he breaks I need to have time to break as well especially when you’re traveling at higher speeds so you can see now on the navigation the Middle Lane and the right lane aren’t highlighted the reason why they’re not highlighted is because I’m coming off at the next exit this Lane naturally comes off Main mirror left mirror signal left this is now the milbrook roundabout here I’m going to be taking the third exit now just as a little pointer if you’re in this left lane the left lane leads into the middle Lane nice and easy the Middle Lane goes to your second third and fourth exit main mirror slowing down so the first that left lane goes first exit second exit this one goes second third and fourth the one on your right goes fourth fifth or Loops back ground again so as I’ve come off I’ve stayed in the left hand lane left hand lane got me into the middle Lane now all I’m going to do is just follow this straight into the middle Lane and as soon as I go past the second exit underneath the bridge main mirror left mirror signal left and just come off nice and easy on the day of you test if your visibility is restri like if the sun’s glaring in your eyes it’s your job to put your sun viser down the examiner is not going to tell you to do that your driving main mirror M check breaking making sure I’m giving the vehicle tire and T so we’ve gone past our first exit the one in front of us where that truck’s just gone that’s your second exit so if I did want to take second exit from Main mirror check from this Lane here I could there’s two lanes that go into a second exit see it the truck and the white car main mirror left mirror signal left because I’m going to be coming off at the third exit and look how nicely it just comes off there’s my third that’s my fourth so if I wanted to take fourth main mirror cancel signal I would signal after the third it’s a mini roundabout going straight ahead just checking over my right make sure it’s clear clear after a minut roundabout joined a new road so main mirror check speed limit of this road is 30 m an hour at the end of the road there’s a mini roundabout at which I’ll be turning left first exit so foot of the accelerator speed approaching speed should be approximately five main mirror left mirror signal left breaking looking over towards my right to see if I need to give anyone way that vehicle’s signaling left so that means I don’t need to give him way anymore he’s not going to cross my path new road new mirrors scanning the road plan for as far as you can see anything that would potentially cause you a problem we’ve literally got one mile left until the test is over obviously the examiner would get you to do your parking Maneuvers and potentially a control stop as well main mirror going straight ahead at this mini roundabout slowing down I can’t go over the paint work I’ve got to go around it the left the red vehicle got to give me we because I’m on his right main miror check that roundabout is a bit tricky because you’ve got a mini roundabout you approach it nice and easy at 5 m an hour so you’re able to get around the roundabout and then you’ve got zebra Crossing as well so if you need to rewind to that and just have a look at that mini roundabout and there’s only space for one vehicle between the zebra Crossing and that mini roundabout so you just want to be careful there’s a school close by you’ve got a shops on the right hand side as well so kids will just run out in front of you if um at the end of school or the start of school not saying all kids are like that but they’re knowledge of danger is limited they are kids and they do have priority but you don’t want anyone dashing out on you in a zebra Crossing so you want to be mindful and be aware of your surroundings right next roundabout is a mini roundabout main mirror check taking my foot off the accelerator breaking again I want to get around the mini roundabout checking my left mirror because obviously if I’m going to go around I don’t want to knock off any cyclist any electric sco anyone on an electric scooter main M check and picking up my speed again at the next roundabout I’ll be turning left first exit next round about again mini round about main mirror left mirror foot off the accelerator signaling I can see that silver van is signaling right so he’s going to come around giving him priority falling in main mirror for New Road num mirus speed limit on this road is 20 we are back on Green Lane at maybe um approaching maybe teser again bear in mind as you’re coming in you don’t want to exceed the speed limit main mirror right mirror because I moved out main mirror here I’m the one with the problem but there’s no one coming so Main and right moving out if there was a vehicle coming then I would stop give them priority Main and left moving over again this car is right on my backside taking the next r on my right main mirror right mirror signal in slowing down it safe turning in just going to pulling over on the left main mirror left mirror signal left completely off the accelerator nice and slow handbrake first secure the car first always and then straight into park switch off the engine I hope you guys enjoyed that video uh of the test route these routs are actual rotes that my students went on um and these tests as well I was set in the back seeing exactly where um how the route was conducted um what I will do I did forget to put in there where the saav was switched off so what I’ll do
