good afternoon good afternoon good afternoon how are you H how is everyone I hope that you are well today let me know in the comments that you are here and listening um I am of course waiting for you to let me know that you’re here good afternoon um and to today we are going to talk about the summer and how to learn English and how to be productive during uh the summer uh I think in my opinion I think it’s you know uh it’s not really you don’t have to do it uh the summer is there for you to enjoy uh it is a very nice time of the night the evenings are very long and it’s very warm usually not everywhere and not always but usually it’s warmer so we all want to use this time to enjoy ourselves and I completely understand that uh you know and I think it’s okay to do it but of course I’m here to teach you English and I do want you to learn and I do want you to uh enjoy yourself a little bit too so today I um I have a couple of advice uh tips for you to use during the summer uh so you can uh relax have some good time but also do not stop learning English hello Iona nice to have you here uh and uh let me know of course uh how are you are uh as you can see I am today in still not at home I am still at my sister’s house uh in the north of Portugal and I am going back tomorrow I spent a very nice time here I was uh here for over a week um and uh I was looking after my sister’s dog because my sister went to visit my uh our family in Poland as I was here and I was very productive I did a lot of things and uh I prepared a lot of materials and I was uh just yeah just focused uh you know really really focused on my work uh which is very hard to do sometimes and at home when I am at home it’s harder for me to to focus I procrastinate a lot so this time I was very productive and really uh working hard during this uh whole week and every day I I I did actually uh produce some materials and a lot of things so I’m very proud of myself so but tomorrow morning I’m going back to my uh house in near Lisbon [Music] for for B [Music] yes challenge Abella good afternoon Anna beata agesa welcome welcome it is so nice to have you all here and uh I am so glad that you are here and listening of course uh so remember about chitchat Challenge and about downloading your uh the uh worksheet okay so let me uh just set this up first I just need to put the uh slides up on the screen I have nice slides today very summary uh you will see in a moment so summer with English today we are going to talk about that summer with English so um what ah something is going on today with my computer but why is this a good time to learn why is this a good time to learn why is summer so good I love uh the summer season and I always really love it and try to use it to for different things sometimes I just try last year for example uh I tried to use it for uh meeting people so this was my project for the whole summer and uh I actually organized a couple of events uh in Lisbon and I was meeting people just meeting people all the time new people old people you know friends not friends was just a very social time for me it was very nice um and this year I’m not sure sure yet but I think I would like to uh just relax a little bit too and I would like to go back to learning Thai uh I haven’t done that for a long time because of my work and because of different things so this uh time I would like to uh spend some time on it but I I’m also writing a book um so I want to finish that this summer so that’s my project let me know in the comments what you’re doing and if you have uh certain uh projects plans goals and so on but for uh for people who for people who um don’t know yet or thinking about why is this such a good time to learn so first of all we have longer days right so it’s not so dark outside all the time so you know uh I think the sunset is around 6 uh no not 6 what am talking about 9 maybe or even later very long days so we have more energy we have more time and more energy um you also very often Polish people love cycling I think it’s uh very fashionable in Poland so a lot of people go cycling a lot of people exercise outside which means again a lot of energy which is great use that energy use that energy to do things uh and you have more opportuni to opportunities to learn so I’m not only talking about you know uh your lessons of course that’s very important but I’m also talking about going out and traveling so a lot of you will travel this summer uh so you’re going abroad probably a lot of uh people do go abroad of course not all of you but a lot of people go abroad U maybe you go to a different city in Poland um and and you can meet other people there and in big cities in Poland uh you have meetups we call them meetups uh so people of different nationalities from different country countries they meet to talk and this is a very very uh nice uh thing to to do you know uh and and to take part in those meetups so you have some opportunities to learn uh aat Zar is here welcome and agneska says you’re writing a book yes I am writing a book uh finally I can tell you that uh maybe I will publish it I will tell you maybe next week I will tell you uh but uh if when when it’s when it’s time I will tell you all about it uh but uh later on okay so I also have uh a schedule for you okay so uh we will have a look at how your schedule should look like so your weekly schedule should have one conversation lesson per week okay so every week week you’re meeting with your teacher so for for a conversation okay um and this is your and ideally if you can this should happen the on the same day at the same time but if you can’t that’s fine but it should happen once a week after the lesson you should check your notes and if you have everything what you need if you have time you do your homework so usually have a look at what you did during the lesson go through your notes make the notes if you haven’t uh read what you have what your teacher gave you what you did during the lesson if you have more time not always we do that but if you have more time start doing your homework straight away so your the information that you had during the lesson is still fresh FR in your mind but of course if you have time if you don’t that’s fine do it the next day then you should have 15 minutes daily practice here you learn vocabulary 15 minutes a day remember to learn your vocabulary in context so this means that you should build sentences you should build stories you should prepare presentations okay and then you use your vocabulary when you do that this is very important twice a week practice theory of grammar so here you basically most of the time if your teacher gives you homework then most of the time this homework will maybe focus on grammar so do your homework during this time but if it doesn’t then take a grammar book and review your grammar twice a week okay you can also mix it with vocabulary so this means that you are you will uh maybe create a story create sentences create something and you add grammar to it so vocabulary and grammar then you fill your free time with English so listen to podcasts read books articles watch movies things like that very very important you should really use a lot of opportunities a lot of your time to fill it with English and of course I understand that you sometimes want to just listen to polish things and that’s fine okay please don’t go crazy just a little bit here and there for example if you’re cleaning every day you do something every day you clean you run you go you maybe you go on a bus okay a lot of you go to work by bus by Train by Trum So take your podcasts take your audio books take your books right um maybe articles too maybe instead of reading um on the on the internet read BBC read uh maybe the Garden or or some other news channels of course this will I will say again later on but it has to be on your level so it cannot be too difficult okay but I will come back to this too and try a language exchange okay so language exchanges are very very good for learning um and I understand that it is is hard and it’s time but nowadays like language exchanges don’t mean that you have to sit with someone and drink coffee you can do it on the chat you can do it through WhatsApp you can do do it through some applications you can do it through Facebook you know a lot of things that you can do like a language exchange that you don’t doesn’t have to be a meeting it can just be a message that you sent but I will tell you all about that in a moment so uh let me oh something is popping up uh on my screen again so yes so use that use uh these opportunities to learn sorry oh my godness what is going on here so applications and Technology applications and technology so what useful apps we have we have dualingo we have bubble and we have memorize for beginners okay people who speak English already are good at English these apps are not good for you don’t use them it’s waste of time intermediate very good I really like this application it’s called Eva ew a and it is a reading application okay so basically you have a book it’s for reading it’s not for speaking but you have a book and the uh The Voice reads the book and you can see the subtitles of that and then you can check the words there very good for listening very good for reading not for speaking but really nice I I really recommend commended Advanced I would say tandem it’s really really nice tandem is a good application tandem is for language exchanges sometimes it is hard to find someone there uh who you can speak to Okay sometimes the the people there are strange but uh you can you know you need to spend a lot of time looking for people you need to spend a lot of time finding your friends finding people who you want to speak to and when you find them then you can practice your English every day and tandem is a very good application because you don’t have to talk to people on the phone you can send a voice message so you can record yourself and you can send that message to the person and the person sends you another message also as uh voice uh recording so this is really good you know and for example when I learn uh I’m uh when I learn a language uh I can be in a shop and I can record myself hi I’m in a shop I’m just shopping what you doing you know it doesn’t have to be very long and that’s already a language exchange and you can do it anytime at any any point really so really nice I really recommend tand them um I talkies are really good uh for language exchanges too uh I found uh some friends there too but again you have to really try a lot of times to uh to to find find uh someone there but it is it is it is possible so YouTube channels of course okay English uh YouTube channel I do convers there and once a month well more or less once a month uh you get a longer video uh with a real conversation you can listen to people having conversation and then I analyze this and this week you have a new convers a real conversation uh and it is um a fragment of a documentary about Bhutan about a country in Asia so um very interesting things there please like And subscribe um and of course English with Lucy I really like that uh one I use it sometimes even because I I really like to watch her she’s beautiful amazing accent really nice um really nice materials British English very very British really British English and the next one is lingua Marina uh she is actually Russian I think but she speaks uh American English and she has a lot of good materials and some courses if you want to also use that really nice um and then if you are Advanced so the okay English English with Lucy lingua Marina all these English learning um materials are for all levels everyone can do it but very often it’s uh for example when I do I do it for more advanced students but I do short videos too for people who are not very Advanced so this also is uh for everyone uh English with Lucy Marina I think it’s um it’s also for everyone but sometimes you know sometimes you want something that is not about English you just want to watch something else so for example uh when you are a bit more advanced or intermediate uh you can watch whatever you like I like my favorite channels are the Diary of an uh of uh an the CEO I think the Diary of a CEO I don’t know a or there I can’t remember but basically it these are very long interviews with uh with uh experts from different things so we had psychologies psychologists um Sports people producers directors actors you know and they talk about their life and they talk about sometimes they talk about business but very often they talk about just life things and it’s very interesting the next one is The Hollywood Reporter I really like this one uh I uh these are just actors uh or actresses usually um sitting at a table and talking about life very nice so recently I saw Nicole Kidman who else was that there very famous actresses Sophia verar and Jodie Foster and they were all sitting at a table drinking uh some cocktails and just talking about life really nice very good uh and the last one is Primal video and this one is more about um uh just YouTube channels and how to do videos and things like that so maybe not for everyone but this is what is one of my favorite once so like I said you know you can you can just watch whatever you like on YouTube and it will be nice uh to it will be good for you because it’s interesting for you and also you learning something new and you uh practicing your speaking uh Yan says I recommend news in levels very interesting okay have a look at Yan’s recommendations uh here and and I don’t know this website I will have a look because it sounds like something I could use for my lessons so I will have a look for that um and uh the last thing um uh I would like to recommend for this summer is the chitchat challenge the chitchat challenge that I’m doing next week please sign up it is really good it is a good challenge for you it PR you’re practicing your English you’re listening you’re speaking you’re writing it’s all in one it’s an amazing Challenge and uh everyone should sign up to it really because I have some really nice materials for you because every day you get a video and then you watch it and you have to answer some questions and I have really good materials for that and it uh I I’m sure that you will like it very interesting and really fun uh so the next one is movies and series okay so we have for example we have beginners for beginners we have cartoons and short animated movies okay beginners please do not watch difficult things because you will be frustrated okay you will be very nervous you’ll be frustrated and you will not understand anything unless you like something and you want to watch it and it doesn’t bother you then that’s fine but if you watch something and you don’t understand and you start feeling like oh my God this is horrible you know I don’t want to watch it anymore then just switch it off and watch some Peppa Pig or something you know it’s really it’s the best thing intermediate sitcoms and Light TV shows so something that is short usually 20 minutes 30 minutes and funny light you know all these TV shows that you have on Netflix like friends uh Big Bang Theory How I Met Your Mother uh Modern Family all these things very good for intermediate students okay because they are not there are no problems there uh everything is very light people are laughing you know it’s it’s it’s it’s a little bit better for your thinking Advanced anything you like okay I normally watch TV shows and documentaries on Netflix uh recently I watch a very good show called a British show called Marcela or Marella um there are three seasons of that uh but I started that uh last week and it’s very good but it’s a crime show it’s uh it’s uh it’s about this detective in London and uh it’s very good uh but again if you Advanced because I think for people who are not Advanced it’s just not going to be very good I think you’re not going to understand anything and it’s just going to be frustrating um reading and writing reading and writing that’s very also very important even if you want to learn how to speak reading and writing also is worth putting that in your calendar so first of all if you’ve never read books in English you should get books with um with uh a dictionary and in Poland there is this publishing company called okay so all the books there under I think they are ebooks really but all all of them they have dictionaries very good way as I said the application called ever it’s very good for reading and for listening so get that if you don’t know what else um you know children’s books things like that romances Horrors short books with big letters basically very good for for Learning and also it should be a adjusted to your level so if you’re a beginner read books for beginners if you are more advanced then read whatever you want but if you are a beginner please don’t read uh Advanced books because it doesn’t make any sense okay so just start from your level to level and try to write a bit too your homework emails chat messages write a journal okay summer you know you can take journal and you every day you can write a little bit in English what you did that day and uh where you went and what you know what you did and so on it’s and then next year you can look at oh I went to B I went to Italy and it was very nice you know you can describe it very nice exercise and people say that journaling is really good for your brain as well so why not why not so uh please uh please um you know include your writing and reading in your uh in your learning then we have something like smart goals okay so this is something that I wanted to show you so there is a I’m sure that if you work in corporations and if you work in a company you heard about smart goals and I think it’s very good to look at this um when you set your goals for your learning okay so smart so we have S and your goal should be specific so your goal should be uh an answer to the question what do you want to achieve okay and this can be a long-term goal but it can be also a short-term goal so for example when we talk about the summer uh we can say that until September I want to learn um I don’t know I want to learn Le 100 Words and I want to learn three tenses and I want to be able to use them together let’s just say right or until September I want to do 30 English lessons that’s also a goal right so think about it what do you want to achieve until September M is for measurable so how will you measure it so When September Comes When September Comes that’s a song uh When September Comes how will you know that you achieved your goal so can you for example count the English lessons that you had can you say that you know 100 words how will you know that you know 100 words how will you know that you know how to use three three tenses okay so think about it will there be a test uh will you do a test with your teacher uh will you count it will you have a list of these things so this is important because on the 1st of September you have to achieve it a achievable so this one is also very important is the goal achievable so this means is it is it actually realistic okay because sometimes people say oh I’m just going to be I’m going to do three courses 5,000 lessons and I’m going to do this I’m going to read a book in English and I don’t know what else right but this is too much so you have to think how much time do I have can I actually is this actually possible for me to do right because otherwise if you don’t achieve it you’re going to be very disappointed so you have to really be very realistic and you have to think about what’s possible for you R is for Relevant so is the goal you useful for your learning English how will it impact your life okay so if you uh want to I don’t know do 50 English lessons uh until September so is this useful for your learning English for example yes of course right but um you want to learn 100 words okay is this useful maybe it’s maybe it’s not maybe I don’t know maybe I should have less words or more words okay maybe learning words doesn’t do anything for me because I am not learning them in a context maybe I should learn them in the context and then they will be uh relevant to me okay okay or how is this relevant to my life is taking lessons is learning this good for my life good for my career for example how will it impact your life um for example if you want to do 50 lessons in the summer will this be very stressful for you uh will this cause you any stress maybe some financial problems okay think about that too that’s very important important tea is for time bound so when are you going to achieve them so I’m saying first of September but it can be also first of October because September is still a bit of a summer right it’s still if Autumn is starting but people are still on holidays and so on and uh for for me for example it’s still the summer September is still the summer for me so you know when will this goal have to be achieved first of September I don’t know 20th of September 1 of October okay but also remember that it can be also a very long-term goal uh so for example by the end of the of next year I want to speak English Okay so uh what what and and here you also can answer all these questions and set yourself a goal for the next year and then the next year you can divide into three months and every 3 months you have a different goal and you can also do this the smart goal for for these smaller goals as well it’s very useful I think it’s it’s you know it’s kind of uh a good thing to to do so I wanted to show you uh also the table that I uh created for you so this table is in your um in the in this um work in this worksheet and as you can see uh you can you can print it or you can just uh copy it up to you so you have go here uh right uh on on the left and then you have all these um letters so specific measurable achievable relevant time bound and you have questions also you can answer these questions here so you put your goal here and then you answer your questions here and you can have as many goals as POS as as you want it doesn’t have to be one goal right it doesn’t have to be uh just oh I want to I don’t know do 20 lessons until September uh but it can be a different goal as well so you know very good for your thinking very good for making decisions very good for planning uh and uh I recommend to do this for for for other things in your life as well it can be I don’t know something in your work for example changing your work changing your job is also a goal when do you want to achieve it how are you going to achieve it is it is it specific is it relevant how is going to impact your life and so on very very nice for going through things I recommend it so please um download the worksheet and have a look at it and do it and I want to ask you about your goals for this summer please let me know in the comments about your goals in for the summer what do you want to achieve when it comes to English uh so it can be anything um and tell me about how you planning your summer as well are you taking breaks uh are you not taking breaks going on holiday you know another goal uh that can be uh that you can do uh it’s when I go on holiday I want to speak English I want to use English so answer these questions they’re very helpful how are you going to achieve it how are you going to measure it how are you going to know that you actually achieved your goal things like that again very
