Went on a bikefishing trip last weekend along the McKenzie River Trail with the primary goal of catching fish and making a short to enter into the Swift Campout Video Challenge. Broke my fishing pole tip and my gopro, but had a great time! A few thoughts on the route:
- I was shocked that it really didn't feel that busy. We went on Saturday/Sunday and the weather was phenomenal.
- We saw people on gravel bikes, its all singletrack, but its generally smooth and flowy. I pretty much always ride a hard tail, and thats what i'd recommend, but you don't need it!
- You can wildcamp along sections of the Mckenzie River Trail. There are some "spots" where people obviously set up camp. The Forest Service campgrounds were full.
- Fishing was good, (and I am a terrible fisherman) access isn't always easy, but you'll find the good spots as you ride along the trail. The places where I caught fish a Tenkara rod would have worked just as effectively.
- We took it super chill, I think this is an awesome option for someone who wants to do their first single track bikepacking trip!
