Live stream of the super hustings event involving candidates wishing to be the next MP for Slough and Windsor
all right [Music] live that [Music] microphone these two should be [Music] okay right uh good evening ladies and gentlemen welcome to tonight’s super hustings for the 20124 UK general election focusing on the slow and Windsor constituencies this is the first time I’ve brought two constituencies together but as here at s verner’s Catholic gramon we are right on the slow and Windsor constituency border it just made sense it is a pleasure to see so many engaged and enthusiastic individuals gathered here to listen to the candidates and participate in the Democratic process before we begin I’d like to share a brief historical facts being a history teacher that incorporates both our towns during World War II slow and Windsor played pivotal roles in supporting the war efforts Slow’s industrial base produced essential equipment and Vehicles whilst Windsor Castle served as a refuge for the royal family and valuable National Treasures this shared history of resilience and contribution highlights the strength and unity of our communities during this challenging times to start let me share a story involving both slow and Windsor several years ago there was an annual charity boat race on the river 10 between teams from slow and Windsor The Windsor team confident in their Royal Heritage decided to decorate their boats with a mockup of Windsor Castle the slow team not to be outdone showed up with a boat covered in marsbar rappers and a B Banner that read powered by Chocolat as it turns out the extra weight of the decorations slowed down the Windsor boat and the slow team fueled by their sweet inspiration won the race it was a delightful reminder that sometimes a little bit of humor and creativity can win the day due to time constraints the party will work in teams tonight and will decide amongst themselves who will answer the questions any winds or slow specific questions will of course be answered by the relevant candidates this approach ensures that we hear a broad range of perspectives and expertise from each party as we proceed with tonight’s discussions it’s important to remember that we’re here to listen to learn and engage respectfully any appropriate language inappropriate language and behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances we are here to contribute positively to our Democratic process and it’s crucial that we do so with decorum and mutual respect now without further Ado let’s welcome our candidates who are here tonight to share their visions and answer your questions thank you I’m looking forward to productive and respectful evening there is already a troublemaker in can can we share the answers we don’t if we don’t take again absolutely just just be conscious of Time how long you suggest each have to answer question oh 30 seconds so you know you’ve got five minutes between you oh yeah yeah perect sharing y okay um M you grab first microphone so I’m going to invite the candidates um to come up to the front and give a two 2 minute speech if it stretches that far or you can just go down there that’s fine that’s okay and so I’d like to invite um habitar man from the labor party to come and deliver the first speech thank you [Music] first Rich to [Music] might thinking and I know that this is a real concern for residents we don’t necessarily feel the community and I genuinely that that level of representation that you’ve been used to in Parliament will not be forcoming here in my C of the consitency of now this is where I GRE up this is where I went to school and this is where I represented for the last 14 years of counc so I understand your concerns about not being represented but I also understand the priorities of concerns that you have for your families and our community moving forward now this election is an opportunity for change we have the opportunity to change the last and turn page and the last 14 years of chaos and division of the conservative government is what have we seen we have seen our Public Services Trumble we have seen our school buildings come as of our children’s heads we’ve seen crime and crime rise and the number of police offices on the street for when we have felt that very real in hearing an angry we deal with the consequences of these decisions made by government each and every day now we do have an opportunity on for page and make a difference and set our for our ambition and our hope for the next five years now I hope after we have the debate today that you will be convince that the Lo party and the Lo government is the way forward to deliver the change and deliver the for our country but I also hope for those of you who live in their parts of land that are moving into the of constituency that you also understand how important it is have a local champion on your side standing up for your priorities for your desires and making sure that this part of constituency along with every other part is not forgotten and neglected as we move forward I look forward to having your questions today and at the end if anybody does want that thank you very much thank you very much okay I’d like to welcome Chelsea white from the liberal Democrats hello everyone my name is and I want tell you a little bit about why I’m stand in sou I joined the while studying my lawg at University living with friends from across the issues and social since graduating University I was fortunate to work in the European Parliament in Brussels where I liveed for two years prior to brexit during my time in Brussels I work with liberal and Progressive politicians from across Europe with a focus on issues around civil liberty Justice and the environment more recently I work with the Liv elected May Watford gaining firstand experience how a well-run Liv Council can have a positive impact on the lives of local people the ls are the only party with a combination of policies to bring about real change bying issues of concern to flow we have posed policies to address the years of neglect by both the national conservative government and local lab Council we are campaigning to fix the crisis in our nhf protect our local environment and tackle the cost of living and housing crises the L believe in the protection of fundamental rights of people across the world designed against persecution and only the Liv have consistently campaigned for a SE F in G at a free and independent for a fresh will stand up for you vote for me thank you Chelsea I’d like now to invite up Julian CE from the liberal Democrats sorry I’ll do this so I feel i’ been here every week because actually I have been here mosts because my daughter she’s 10 and she’s some was here and I’m really glad that L as it har I’m win and I’ve lived in around the area for about 20 years I’ve been a long campaign on all sorts of things and liberal Democrat wherever you have in the country we always are local chaps that’s what we are and more many of other candidates in the consitency we are the local C we happy do this and I I I will EMP exactly what Chelsea has has said prly we we have a really strong Manifesto at this election and what we on the doorsteps across the constitu water as all the way through consc hearing people up with conserves even conserv members say they won’t vote this time V consern this time and then they say oh yes will vote sorry and um quite simply they in most they we are the main challengers in the winter constituency and so look we I will be a local champion ined and yes I hopefully I won’t say any more because that will come up questions so hope I do look forward to listening to you all [Music] [Applause] tonight what have for second um I’d like to invite Sim Dylan up from the [Music] [Music] workers my and the work fora um so I went to can be so I search what the duties are for and I found that there are three main duties first is to act National interest the second is to act the interests of your constituency and third if you belong to a political party to act as well as long as it doesn’t legalize the interests of the nation and your constituency with the workers party that happen because we work for the people we want change we want for people to be able to to live their Liv for for healthare to improve quality which is why you should V for the Workers Party under George party for a better future thank you thank you very much Sim um and then I’d like to invite Michael FS from the green party for wi so hello and welcome so first of all who am I and why am I standing to become green wi my name Isa and wi is my home it’s where I was born it’s where I went to school and it’s where I spent the best part of my life my rout into politics was completely unplanned it was 2016 and i’ recently moved back from wind completing my University degree and walking through the High Street I saw a man starish on pavement touching bottles of whiskey in his hands little did I know this moment would be the moment I would start my political Journey having never seen a site like this in L before I tried to stop and speak to I asked him if he was okay if he need me any help and his name Martin J now me and Martin good friends and it because of him I stand here today so I can help other in this current environmental and C living crisis it is obvious big completely out the people they are elected to represent the political class obsessed over issues that have bear majority we need real hope real change and I’m here to offer res that as the green winds I would like to represent all residents from De to L from Rosey to as I want to restore people’s Hope and Faith in politics as a course to good and I will work cooperatively with whoever the next government for a green agenda that promotes the quality of life and protects people and Planet the PO thank you thank you right I’d like to invite David Buckley from the independence [Music] okay good evening everyone I’m Davy you’re independent CID I your I will protest against all the political parties that and and they will continue to fa Party politics broken Britain by putting their needs first only independent can put their needs for us every time I here to make your change for the entire consitency ask we’ve seen political parties fa Us in the past and today tomorrow will no if we don’t the change voting for any party on theth of July means more of the same the is we Face our will and our happening now we can’t wait for Party politics to sort out imagine a life where put dra needes first every time let’s remember no single party our big issues only an independent for people before politics let’s make a start by putting independent into par and change politics forever let’s use this this opportunity as a catalst forun let’s remember this election is a fin Choice vote for indivual party and get more of the same or vote for independent first every time a vote for any political party as a vote for more broken promises and this Chang jumping from one party to another isn’t changed it’s just jumping out the so what is the first St in real change if the world consitency independent each for the first time in history we will have a voice to pop all the constituents first BR the need of local people to the front of the agenda all political parties follow their own agendas not your remember an independent answers to you Al I’m presid first and will be second by your side you will be you will never be alone yeah I will stand with you fighting for your aspirations restor hope and trust in Parliament this constituency is called to action we need to more politics for now and forever thank you for listening remember hope for independent your own independence [Applause] I’d like to invite charala independent candate evening everyone my I’ve beening as years and I the reason I’m standing as a local independent candidate is because obviously the party oring candidates from El we need someone who is committed who is passionate who is serving already in the I for almost 19 years and my family and my children are gr I did my masters in civil engine I’ve been working as an ID consult for 25 years I got manag experience in the corporate sector as and look at my political accomplishments obviously I first learned the know my part 2018 I stood I as a candidate in 2019 in 2021 I won from that was the first for the party part of course I was as after 20 years of in 2023 again I and I was part of Adra group if you look at my manester it’s all about SL because I have no control of the political parties and no obligation no it’s all about improving the safety it’s all about improving education in and also including into travel J because from sou if someone is to come to London you need to pay 27 BS but if someone from they 11 or 12s so that is something I have in my man as well and also public it’s all about collation one of the of thetive is to bring the government services to the door of the resents and take your feedback back to the government and being at Westminister or being at council is not enough we need to bring all of you together with VAR stakeholders so I’m a to arrange monthly public meetings with various government stakeholders so the presidents can share their views and and also establish for the people who needs extra support because do thank you independent choose independent thank you very much like to introduce Diana Co for the independence and [Music] SL pleas here years IED was very disappointed I was there but I hope wi people will not I used to come here the they used to me to come sit in their sitting room and Grill me on questions and they were very very politically aware all the policies they trip you up on things they were absolutely amazing so I’ve got a lot of fun M come here I parties but I think a lot of people are I am this independent um I’ve been sou quarter the centy fighting people 12 years ago counil I was Charities AG concern to the homeless to I was the first non St president the state charity rescue I used my home for 12 years as a refug domestic abused victims um I’m a candidate I’m I want to slam I want to represent people I know slam inside out I’m not coming okay I live here I belong here I know SL so that’s the important thing I want to see rejuvenated skills it’s wrong that people go out of lower pay jobs and come the high skills we need to get University back we need to be getting the skills for the people in this community um I was during the time with the lab Council which was incredible time I wasting you all the time we know B Council but frankly the [Music] conserves I’m now introducing Jack Rankin who is a Conservative candidate for Windor good evening everybody rich as Mr says my name is Jack rank I’m a conservative of unionist for all the beautiful towns and Villages of the wind constituency um what I’ve been hearing from people locally is that they want a local vocal constituency first and foremost somebody who is available and accessible in each and every one of those count ACR consitency I have heard people’s concerns abouts of moving into sou Ming we’ve already been dealing with that some know well many years and started of our here as well isues here from what I’ve seen the issues in L so far particularly Poli andal Behavior important to people in the last conservative Manifesto we promised an extra 20,000 police officers that’s has been delivered int Val people in their communities and social behavior and so that’s Focus what I would say for those of you who are worried about what representation looks like the winter seat is already different places so you’ve got ISS also the the concerns be something normal making sure that I have surgeries in each and every one of those including just a the national messaging briefly I understand people’s frustrations cons National because I share and what I [Music] owe let’s introduce m n who is the coner candidate for M sorry thank you very much to this school for hosting us this evening and thank you Richard for being so professional in this um I’m going to start off by being very honest um I’ve only been in politics for three years I was born in Tapo every weekend as a child I’m in my H now every weekend as a child my parents worked in factories they did a sh we would stay on the final Road on Melvin Avenue or or would be on Northampton Avenue between family relatives I work on the at the Pizza H Queens it’s not there anymore I spend time working in hotels as a kitchen Porter all the jobs under the sun in my 20s I worked on windo for 10 years um I bought my first house and I bought my first car I wouldn’t where I am today if it was not for this town I’m married is I gave birth well so for me now is an emotional place and when you have emotion involved in something you go that little bit further you demand that little bit more and I’m a girl who got a little bit of fight in her so I don’t expect you to vote for me just like that but I do would want you to support me and let my actions do the talking um and that’s why I put myself for for this seat um politically I’d like to say we have a conservative Council now we have reelected uh police and crimes commissioner who is conservative and I believe when you have these Partnerships in place that’s how you make progress you can’t make progress efficiently without the right leaders in this now and that’s what I’m here to do to get your support and try and change this out for the better for our children and for our children’s children because it deserves that at the least it deserves that respect for our children and in this town thank you for [Applause] listening than you um the so we go to do something slightly different now so we have a student here from our six young Dana who is going to a stand in the middle over there with a list of questions that I gave you thank you um and um danor is going to ask some questions and then I’m going to invite the parties to them choose who answer them whether you do them M between you or whether or not you um then decide to take one called whatever whichever you want to say it really that being [Music] um so I’d like to oh hello question yeah sorry so after a series of questions so there are certain topics we’re going to cover once we’ve covered the topic I will then open questions to the floor and then um I you know D will then come around with the microphon you can question that questions pick out from people or is it Ming it’s so I received 71 questions which probably I think I think you submitted 25 of them yet so that’s which is perfectly acceptable no problem for that at all um so I have chosen questions from the on submitted to cover as many range of topics that I can but of course if you wish to ask a follow-up question but I am conscious of time as well with so many candidates thank you um so Dana over to you so our first topic of discussion is one it’s discussion so our first theme isaza and our first question soar me thank you um our last question I’d like to ask to our candidates is how will you work towards putting end Devastation Gaza and building a Las in the region okay so just to repeat the question how we work towards putting an end to the devastation in Gaza and building a lasting peace in the region I’m go to the green candidate [Music] first thank you so first of all I would call on parament an International Community demand immediately secondly I the UK Parliament to join the 144 member states of the United Nations in recognizing state of pistan I strongly believe that without the implementation of these two principles the negotiations when the how to deliver the last few in the region will never be able to be successfully realized I’m sure that most people here share my ab horror at this unfolding tragedy the deaths of so many innocent civilian casualties cannot and should never tolerated in the 21st century due to our historic involvement in the region I strongly believe the UK has the somewhat unique moral responsibility to help resolve this conflict and bring about a peaceful solution that respect the nationality and rights of both Israelis and indans religious and political leaders of the two Nations and internationally must come together to to resolve this conf and whatever the outcomes of these difficult Creations will be it must ultimately be one that fully into the occupation of Palestinian territories promotes religious tolerance and delivers lasting peace and prosperity for the two Nations thank you thank [Applause] you independent candidates whichever one you have you have a microphone in your hand so d as we sharing could you tell us when we had home so that we wonder thank you thank you so much Gaz is a tragedy genocide is genocide whether it’s in Rwanda or it’s in laa or it’s in isra it’s genocide I do not think it justifies 500 boms white phosphorous and in C off from Gaza we have to work when I’m elected as your Member of Parliament SP I will be working to get an instant ceasefire and a recognition to stat Palestine and Israel but we need to stop the hamus and zionists using Gaza as a political football and killing so many people because they can and hiding behind people it’s a terrible thing and we need to stop it immediately it’s [Applause] poing is it is a human Cris we need to obviously introduce the Seas fire as soon as possible as an immediate solution if I get elected as an independent MP I work my Best by working with all the parties by working with all the by working with all the stakeholders to introduce c as soon as possible and because I’m independent there’s no pleasure like I mentioned with my intruction from any political groups and there’s no so I can raise the voice for the rest of or the resents of or the res who are suffering as a short Absolution like I mentioned it should be and then of course we need to have a detailed plan comprehensive strategy on the solution as well thank you much thank you I’d like to invite um Man to answer next question thank you what should I say the labor party yeah thank you Richard I’ve been campaigning on the issue of Palestinian state for well over a decade I pr for a back in October the First Council lab group leader sorry in the country to do so so I am not afraid speaking out against party line when it’s something I believe so passionately we’ve had subsequent motions on this in Council and everyone can see my position very very clearly so what needs to happen there’s a short term and then there’s the long term the short term there has to be an immediate bilateral Seas fire we have got to release the hostages innocent lives are innocent lives no matter what side of the conflict they are on the hostages in this conflict are equally innocent and we have got to massively increase the amount and number of humanitarian Aid getting in to Gaza and its population that’s the short term now what we have to do we have to do in the long term first of all we have got to recognize Palestinian statement and I’m very pleased that the lab party Manifesto makes clear that a future government will recognize the in New State we talk about a two State solution well you cannot have a two solution whil one of those parties is not a state so that is an important First Step secondly we need to address the issue of settler expansion to ensure any future Palestinian State can be viable we will need to address this issue head on and there is a way through this so recent CH expansion will need to be Dem demolished and your established ones will need to be a result of compensatory land given from Israel now this has been agreed in the past by both parties so the past P calls that have come forward that have had this agreement with both on the Israeli side and on the Palestinian side so it can be done and we need to give that International will behind it and I would say in the meantime we do need to address the extremely CES violence that is taking place particularly in uh West Bank and finally we need to recognize and I very I’m very clear about this Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people but equally the rightwing populist Netanyahu does not represent the Israeli citizen population so in order for us to move forward we need to be clear and I do agree with one of my colleagues who said about our unique responsibility in this region we need to be making sure that we have capacity building with the Palestinian legitimate leadership Palestinian Authority and that working with them in order to be able to provide a viable and stable leadership because at the end of all of this what do we want we want a safe and secure Israel that can live peacefully side by side with a safe secure and viable Palestine and we have our role today and I’m very clear about where I stand of is so I want to see the conflict in Gaza brought to a sustainable end as soon as possible people we’re all seeing our television screens because it was some Rion but I think we should be very clear how the situation started it started last October unprovoked attack from h on innocent Israeli citizens Israel has right to defend itself like every nation on Earth and that means it’s going to be host back it’s going to be power in Gaza R its capacity in order to launch tax into Israel into the future once we’ve done that then I will support two State solution we should talk about how we go that know we need a political Horizon which provides credible and irreversible Pathway to two State solution we need a formation of a Palestinian government for the West Bank in Gaza with international support which excludes house and any other organization and that is meaningfully the only way that we can progress and meaningful two State solution we hear the phrase free Palestine I think I agree with that free Palestine from hamas’s Terror and so we can move forward in peaceful coexist together thank you I’d like to pass to Liberal Democrats thank you um as I previously said in my opening statement um the liberal Democrats are the only party that consistently campaigned for a cea fire in Gaza and an independent paltin and that’s locally and nationally the only party that has been United in that the liberal Democrats have always stood on the side of international law we believe in working collaboratively with International organizations not leaving or undermining them as the other parties have we also believe the UK government should seek the export of British arms to Israel in line with our party’s General stand are not having arms to countries where there are serious human rights concerns we need an immediate by to get the hostages out put an end to the humanitarian disaster and provide the space for a two-state solution hello yes so let me just add completely agree with all that first of all I completely condemn the Hamas attacks on of October the UT cowardly attacks and Israel has absolutely got the right to respond to that but must do in accordance with international law [Music] no I’m absolutely disturbed by the enormous death toll that has happened in Gaza and I’m particularly disturbed by the many attacks let’s be honest some clearly targeted on un vles and un sa now as Chelsea said we led the Bal to stop the war Le them spokesman on this herself the friend has been absolutely clear I think very very without try to take side of peace and we’ve also stood as Chelsea says on the side of international law we have to uphold rulings of the IC the whereever they live we need solution this is opposed byass it is also opposed by the right in Israel we have to be the adults in the room and I’m really disappointed in both the labor and conserv of leadership on this matter or wait a later question yeah yeah I’m very I’m just very conscious I don’t trying to avoid all three Independents having the floor you know basic cannot be human and not realize what’s you know the situation is the is country and part Politics the situation party always decide what should happen what will happen these matters and we need to become hum we need to look at what this step station so we all agree here that there should be a BAL we believe there should be a two State resolution this and we believe we need to stand in P I think that you know we all need to P together the parties together about what one blame the other one blame this one we need to P together these are areas where we need to P together and push forward to show our unity in making change across the world for the UK to use his powers and and the more we each other each other we will not make these changes we need to P together all of us for this place and make sure this sustainable Place happens everyone Palestine and IND we need peace thank you thank you thank you David um yeah so um obviously the independence um it’s a slightly complicated narrative um but in interest of time if we could just try and have one person answer that fantastic just work that between themselves brilliant when you’ve never talked to each other before that’s excellent what could possibly go wrong um Dana next question L to this question what will you do to support [Music] Community what will you do to support Community cohesion link to the previous question and I think that’s probably relevant to the SL candidates I’d like to go to conservative party first pleas um being is from a very highly age I remember how United this place once was it was a real model for integration and unity Muslims Christians SS and Hindus but things have changed and they’ve changed for the wor trust has been lost and the only way to rebuild trust in community is this true dialogue we need to have open communication and we need to share one another’s celebrations I lived in the Middle East for quite a while and there was never a month I think where we didn’t celebrate whether it was Eve whether it was Christmas whether it was zali um I’m also a sports woman and in 2006 I set up the SL League it was a summer league back then and I was the coach for a youngin and we played the style seek girls the children from the Muslim Community asked me why I was their coach because it’s it doesn’t matter I was trying to explain to the children where you’re from it’s about coming together and uniting and celebrating who we are as individuals and it would be under the umbrella that I would want to bring our community together through many other endeav i’ like to bring forward as somebody that cares about community that is one of my first pledges for this town because we are not strong if we don’t have that Unity we become SED and that is foundation thank you thank you I think s in the Workers Party love to hear her views we want to build a community where everyone feels valued and supported and connected um Community cohesion is not just about living side by side but about living together in a way that respects and values are differences while working towards common goals so we want to promote inclusivity and diversity and like it was mentioned celebrate each other’s cultures and ethnic ethnic ethnicities and religious backgrounds so festivals community events and educational programs can all bring together our community and we can create forums with community members and share their experiences and perspectives fostering Mutual understanding and respect so yeah is important thank you thank you very much the independence like to nominate speaker for this one the independence and we’re going to chair very quickly um I actually think that searis has been used in s in this election and it’s very unfortunate I think once the election is over that will go especially if Member of Parliament is fighting for a solution to Gaza so I don’t see a problem we’ve always got we’ll continue to get on it’s being used in this election which is wrong while working from any complex substance to matter certainly need to all the rather than taking this of one Community decision on what community says we need to bring thees together and get their views and and get a collaborative solution and propose that solution to the parament obviously being we asend dependent we propose a solution but a solution to the under the political party who is leing the they can take inputs into consideration and work Wass bringing the I mean work was bringing a good solution which will keep the communities together thank [Applause] you yeah [Music] okay yeah s our mic person just run off to put the fans on so um yeah there’s no doubt that we live in a divided Society just wi but throughout the UK whether it’s physical opinions and Persuasions religious and cultural differences or even just what football team you support I believe so as a society we should all remember the late words of the late M Jo that we have more in common than which divid US it seems more than obvious to me that greater political religious and cultural education is key in cesic society that respects the Traditions cultural heritage of everyone within our communities and as a green part of MP I will seek to add more political cultural and religious studies into the C to bring our communities together I’d like to invite the labor party thank you I think it’s important that they’re honest and don’t look back and was into glasses for those of us much we grew up in s we the 90s the idea that we lived in this constant sex of Harmony was not true we had very real race based issues in the 1990s and they didn’t disappear from the PES that we have heard today it was the hard work and determination of political and Community leaders that got us from position where we were able to live together in celebration and unity and that is at risk now so there’s no point talking about our Ambitions you want Unity of course be do everybody with us how are we going to achieve it first of all we do not have an inter Forum in this town we and the labor group have been calling for that in the council for the last year and I do think he’s incumbent on both the council leadership and the Parliamentary Representatives when they come forward to really take a leading role in initiating and facilitating that across all the communities in sou secondly we need to take a really serious look at our community political leaders I think it’s shameful that we’ve seen your backward step in local counil for example in the number of fale Representatives how diverse that representation is how we are representing in this case not all parts of our community and we need to take an honest look at that and what that message has sent I do not think it sends the right message now so we do have a hard job in front of us but we’ve done it before we can do it again because those of us who know s and know our community know that we do have more in common and that we can actually celebrate our differences as well as our commity but we do need to put that hard work in thank you there’s no getting away from it the conservatives have created a hostile environment in this country hostility towards refugees and sileny economic migrants and frankly anyone that has been brought up in a certain way politicians should be heing from the FR welcoming people into this country and into our local communities but instead they talk of culture wars and the work agenda lens are the only party with diversity officers as standard and we recognize the need to bring people together so with the changing government and changing politicians locally hopefully I hope that we can get back to being the welcoming country we once were okay right so this be um change the emphasis a bit and um bring our six formers into the equation so I hopefully you’re listening uh Dana can you ask question number four please is Deb I’d like to bring in the Green Party candidate first please going to University is without question one the best decisions I ever made in my life whilst I do not work in the industry I studied leaving the nest of my parents’ house and studying my television production degree at University was some of the most enjoyable years even now as I duck and dve letter sent to me from student finance telling me how much I ear and how much interest they charge me I will never regret my time at University as wi party andp for wins I will campaign to end tuition fees for undergraduates so that future so that future Generations do not have to endure the stress of being scared to open a letter from company thank [Music] you thank you for that question um so as you can tell I just recently graduated so I understand the fear of student death as I’m still going through it right now I just looked at it and my god um so it depends who you are as a person I wouldn’t say your University is for everybody not everybody likes the Academia part andity is what is push and as for the work of Empower individuals without leaving them by that uh higher education should be an opportunity to personal grad and professional not a financial gamble which is why we applicate free first degree um yeah ensuring that all students no matter their background can pursue their studies without burden of death and it makes it accessible for everyone regardless of financial um situations thank you i’ like pass on to Liberal Democrats let’s first we University is not for everyone but for those who do wish to go they should feel comfortable that they’re getting a good deal for the education provided many students including myself while I was studying take on part-time work during their time in University but often this isn’t enough the livs would immediately reinstate maintenance grants for the most disadvantage students to ensure living cost aren’t a barrier to attending University and reduce the amount of students have to borrow overall we would also establish a review of higher education Finance in the next Parliament to consider any necessary reforms in the light of the latest evidence of the impact of the existing financing system on access participation and quality and make sure there are no more retrospective Rising rates or selling off of loans to private companies thank youy the labor part that’s at the end so you’re also going to be hearing a lot from me today um is it worth it for people who want to go and want to take that academic gr personally or Advocate it was it’s not just the academic qualifications you get it is also the wider social cultural and Community experience you get however University is not the only path for students at that age Technical and Vocational skills are just as valid just as important and actually just you can get into just a good employment at the end as well so we need to make sure that for those who want to go to university and who make that choice that their access is there that the funding is available for them and uh that they are able to Pur that but that doesn’t mean it’s to be on the Lal and I’m very clear around that and when we come to University funding I think there are a few issues here first of all we’ve seen that actually it could have aers impact on the affordability if we any party here make unfunded spending commitments around tuitions we saw in the what they had to deal with the coalition government as a result it might actually impact on the number of students that are actually being able to take be taken domestically as universities if they don’t have that funding but then look for overse students to help CL that funding Gap the labor party is also committed to undertaking an LE review of high higher education funding model because the current model doesn’t work for anybody whether you are a university whether you are a student or whether you are the taxpayer that is paying for it it doesn’t currently deliver at all and one of the existing problems with our University funding programs is for those universities who want to take R&D research and development programs at the moment these funding Cycles are very shortterm which means they don’t have the consistency and the stability and it also means that they’re regly having to Res submit bid by bids for funding which then need to be time cost and impact on that the L that current system and Institute a 10e funding cycle for R&D schemes which gives that stability and consistency for those universities who are doing their programs and also the ging costs involved in for them having to consistently bid the little pockets of money thank you very much okay A bit of realism here from a business 40 years experience in business in I agree totally on access all students I think actually funding should be increased to encourage more students to attend University if they there shouldn’t be any barriers to we have to be realistic there has to be repayment student Lo student loans under 400 billion at the moment and could be close to 1 trillion in the near future so I’m fully supported every student who wishes to go to university and we should be looking to support everyone but also supp if you take responsibility on as we do ourselves people we need take that respons and [Music] youee maybe might better for so I’m just trying to be realistic Focus everyone on longterm debt it’s off balance sheet government the moment and affect government World want to expose thank you there’s no discussion about if University is worth or not un University degre but but that is the choice that someone is making and do not think about how much it cost of course certainly you need to consider that factors but it is it is univ is not only about getting you into the career it is about making you as a person as a responsible CI and responsible you will enter the world of reality and of course you at my mans about is trying to bring back we used to have so one of my is to support the con ofing by bringing back to we can reduce the expenses that would in for a student because obviously the living expens around and supp the cost only living expens are very minim so that is also something we can focus into it and obviously when you go to you will be attracted to the high jobs good jobs obviously but as everyone saying it’s not only the there are multiple that one can and choose what you want whe you want to go the or you want to go to the unity but don’t stop going to University just because it is expens it is worth thank [Music] you thank you i’ GL to be here in a gr school I went to gramar school I need unfortunately but I did I don’t think University is for everybody we used to have very good technical schools and I actually believe we should go back to having good technical school schools so that people learn skills we need plers we need electricians we need hanss we don’t just need people studing media studies or how to be a go course manager I think it’s unfair it’s not for everybody the university yes but I don’t think it’s very I don’t think it’s worth studing yourself and your parents with a lifetime of Deb so that you can have an enjoyable time I’m sorry thank [Applause] you I don’t think on so the question is whether it’s W University I think that’s a question for each and every student themselves right my general view is that since 1997 perhaps we’ve send too many people to university on somewh right and I think it is appropriate for people perhaps academic go University I think we started to send too many of our students to University excuse me turn not what I said I didn’t use the word tread but that’s what I the so I think that’s going to be be made on VAR what I would say is that there’s some fantastic vocational opportunities these days I work in the city and could you know 10 years ago you would needed a degree to get a job in the city where now some fantastic friend into the City and so you can get there ahead grp and get into some of the top names of on in the city I also making a reach out there their careers like you know for the right people electricians careers the other thing I would like to touch is the campaign univers conservative grou came to office last May [Music] made there a lot of high tech jobs in this area not necessarily go to SL people and I think the university in the of town can help people access okay thank you um I want to bring the six for is there a six for who would like to raise a point on University [Music] education we stretch that back I know it’s a big topic Brothers you want to go to the you want to go to the microphone as oppos to M come to you that’s probably [Music] easiest um a lot of you mention about investing in a university SL but I feel like one of the main reasons a lot of students leave SL is because of how not bad but SL needs a lot of development so I feel like don’t you think that it would be better to invest in other things like High Street Mak attct attractive place to live before you think about getting University the microphone can you hear me I hate microphone it’s for the live stre oh okay right um there’s lots of things in get bus names we’ve got over spill where the other barers send their homies in slow because it’s cheaper and our own homies can’t get home young people can’t get afford commodation to save and get on the housing lb there’s a myriad of things you like with what you said that was marvelous I you are you there that was marvelous you should think that going into politics okay very def make difference but you know I agree with you there’s so much there’s nothing in this time theon’s gone gone Mar and has gone our High Street is disgrace is the third world High Street the real High Street there is far Road and I just pray the council don’t ruin that so yeah you’re quite right well done you thank very much come in on that Michael is our microphone is microphone [Music] available actually an Outreach recovery worker now working people with alcohol addiction and if if they’re not from this area then s Council doesn’t have a d so I’m sorry it’s not inacurate travel L is full of people from other bars all the hotels are get off your back side and go look temporary must look years I’m sorry years yeah is there is a massive problem with and I do think need to seriously invest in drug andol services and and we will come on that yeah make okay thank you very much right I’m going to move on and I’ve got a surprise question question number five please [Music] do schools enable oril I like to call on the lab candid obviously we have the system here in and actually they’ve done really good work in terms of bringing up the stand of ball schools so if you look back when we were a uh when we back had still had County Council back in 1988 our grar schools in sou were still that as local education Authority in the Bott quarter of performance now look at where we are we are consistently to turn in the country now that is because of the partnership work that’s gone on between our gr schools and our non selected schools which has really enabled to G for our nonselective schools to improve considerably take be school once one of the worst schools in the country now look at it it is a school that is over Tob again and again and as a result a very strong partnership we have of secondary heads in this town and the good work that they do together now I wouldn’t Advocate changing our system because it has served us at this moment of time but I also would Advocate exping is isra doesn’t currently exist we have inherited the school system we have here and it worked well for us the other point I want just make is we have a really fragmented educational system in sou yes we have gramar schools and non selected we have faith schools and no faith schools we have schools and in schools we have every type of school you can imagine in sou and at the moment it is only that partnership working amongst the schools is actually help deliver the Improvement train and the educational attainment that is delivering salid and anything that risk that partnership and further fragmentation would also risk the outcomes for our children thank you that’s bring in the workers start stre very question um so I went myself I just went acoss to up and my brother so um and my brother went to Lo state school went to Academy and I cannot this but he did incredibly well and and he did do he did do better than I did so I my up so I think having great F State School like have mentioned we have a range of different schools and as I was leaving I work more Partnerships it works our education here in SL is actually one of the best of was one of the top 10 in the UK for gram schools so I thank you lovely part I love this I created Wars between everyone so I can give you a personal take rather than a political one my H went to gr school and everyone pretty much most people in his intake became surgeons Bankers solicitors so that was 15 20 years ago um so Grandma schools definitely enable strong social it’s a game Cher it is a game changer I also know that we have schools like the 9 Academy and that has a very high weight list now but I do believe that we need to give the same diligence to all schools I am B of the humity rather than the Sciences I probably would have got into gramar school so I would have needed a SCH to that allowed me to push my ambition in the Arts in history so I I possibly could have been one of the ones left out um I hope that in this town we can work a lot more with the bees of our school and bring more residents actually that live in sou getting into the grand schools now correct me if I’m wrong I do understand there are a lot of students that live outside of this attachment area that get into the gr schools I’d like to try and work on that and find out because of one or two percentage points they haven’t got in I think again we have to focus on this town the residents getting into the correct schools for them and working in partnership with each school and actually meeting the Lang Grandma at Master next week and it’s something that I would like to just Chu a few ideas around to see how we can make it more than equal system where we can work collaboratively with the art of creativity all those children like me that were not strong in Academia respectable at best and see what we can do to lift all the kids that are born and raised in town and and I also like to say we do have a very diverse Community you have to think about the am I to say the white English in working class children and I don’t mean to disrespect when I say that it’s the only I can think of but they are getting left behind the children that are in britwell Social houses we need to remember we’re all part of the same community so let’s help each other out we need a strong education system one in this where we can help one another out thank you okay thank you um P you want on that one yeah just to make the point that our already do specialize in different subjects in sou I as you here will know that’s a technology specialist land [Music] specializ is actually in the Wind of constituency moving forward and one of the things that we I did when I was previously responsible for this we actually look at the adiss criteria and really narrow that admission criteria in terms of the geographical range so that it was more SL shootings more Sho who lived in that were able to go School rather than having a wider admission to conference that technically not within that school now it is for local Council who has the power as a local education authority to be able to do that so anybody suggesting that they make that happen within the so local counil to take look at doing that is exact idea coun responsible thank you from a different side but I to State School my’s a very caring mother realiz schol my went to a school this was in the 1950s so imag so I’ve experience all three stools in my family um and I think what I picked up from all the conversation different was Partnerships and I think that is very very much an independent St it’s about Partnerships and ping together so I just want to say you know schol church but also come back to the church this year we have 120 places with 300 applications you’ve got to get real you’ve got to create these places people and you’ve got to give opportunity the answer to the student is yes fantastic School fantastic Partnerships made in all schools really really important but we need places we can’t keep developing and we can’t develop schools must support teachers that infrastructure go so we must support it we must make iten we [Music] must thank you very much uh liberal Democrats thank you so just to go back to the original question um thank you um the answer I think is that yes grar schools can enhance opportunity for some what we need to do is make sure we enhance opportunity for all and I’m quite proud of the fact that um the one of the things that the liberal Democrats achieved in Coalition and which has survived since is been premum the idea was that this follows the PO ex F specifically for them and and and the schools I’m really proud about that and um we would also we we would R concer cut for that we would also expande School meals to all children in poverty and look my my wife’s a teacher she was saying how um when she she asked her child what did you have a dinner question what did you have dinner and of course it turns out he doesn’t have the only food that he had that day and a lot of things so the last days was the breakfast that provided School Meal now um I think we we really on education I think with mental health professional school that’s need to one thing I will say just to sort of disagree with what La man um and this is going back to more private school is this idea adding that V to I think that’s a bad idea because some will close and it will for the parents who do say to send um their children to those schools they many W so I don’t think that’s a good thing what I would do is I would amend or make more conditional charitable status of some of these schools now I I got SK here I went to school many years ago many years ago um but I’ve got scholarship there and a lot of these schools do do things like they get scholarships and all that St we should make that conditional um so that it’s not just Theus that do that but but encouraged and they have to do it other thank you very much right I’m going to move on move the topic on for this particular one I move on to young people and question number six please say that with exitting friends and RIS mores what hope young people have of being able to to stay in this area I’m [Music] SI thank you yes obviously the rates are increasing on the mes are very high and it’s not easy for and know to getting into this property if you take example of mine my son is 24 years and he’s been working for two years but still he’s nowhere close to buying the property because obviously property prices are very expensive on affility is not fitting into my’s you know salary range so what we need to do is obviously we need to look into building more affordable home and also we need to promote some schemes like first time buyers schemes which will enable more of ERS to getting into the property market and in terms of the r we need to put some land controls otherwise the r are being increased by the landlords as they wish based on of course own reasons but I would propose some controls as well to the government who cance some control so that controls will be under the limit so that you know the man okay sorry yeah thank you thank you I touched on which is where bars are sending their Hom disp no for denying I know it happens and the point is that is driving rents up and it’s making it unaffordable for our young people to ever get on the houses L we need I actually think we need to go more Council I would love to see that and I I definitely think we need to stop the land making these exorbitant profits that they’re making which are often subsidized by us the taxpayer so that’s what I’d like to see the workers [Music] party yeah so it is pretty much a scandal that L people can’t their own homes um or having access to prayer rental um rental places so it it shows the failure of those in charge really and any measures we do take you have to remember that they take c fit so we at the Workers Party want to build more social housing safe affordable with young people young families and to help help a um cost and we want to utilize empty or repurpose building only used so we’ve got more building to build houses and as as mentioned we do need to regulate that with regulation in place we can help protect tenants and um maintain decency and then the labor candate please [Music] thank you some ironic to hear talk about homes when he has lobed against the delivery of every opportunity have so I’m glad to hear on that issue now I think there’s two issues here there’s the provision of homes people to purchase particular first time and then there’s the rental market so if we look at simple fact is we need to be building more social and affordable homes now I’m pleased that look at the Land part that’s moving into constituency or and play my part ination some com forward for development so name Poli site and Mer site and making sure that that includes affordable housing as part of that development for which short Le come before determination then is about how we help people to get on to the housing market so we have our proposal is a mortgage guaranteee people who have monly pay struggle to say for that large deposit without any help that is AE that first help address that issue and get them on the market then we need to the rental market that is a real issue here in South and I think if I I think the disagreement we had between Michael and Diana earlier they were both kind actually what we are seeing is we are seeing other local authorities from pretty far away actually not just our neighboring local authorities but booking our private venting sector meaning we have much L Supply locally for local residents to be able to get into the ven Market we are also seeing a significant rise in the use of section 21 so that’s no fault ofes which then means that these families are presenting at the council and Council responsibility to housing when they have done nothing wrong and they AR they being thrown out Simply on the land wi so we are proposing to ban section 21 evictions so that land can no longer CH family out home no reason we are looking to introduce a rent Charter that give better protection for renters whether that’s surround quality and efficiency of their home in terms of Energy Efficiency safety or whether it’s around actually best protection against exor rate rent prises so it needs to be a mixture of neither one is going to solve the problem in isolation and we need to make sure we address the issue across all housing and thank you very much Lial Democrats thank you the increase in cost of living is concern for everyone but none more than young people the idea of being able to afford a home is unsurprisingly a daunting one and with the current government that won’t be changing anytime soon but the legend have a plan to ensure community-led development as cities and towns using Brownfield former industrial or commercial sites and we committed to building 150,000 new social homes a year we want to deliver a fair deal for renters by immediately Banning no court evictions making threeyear Tendencies the default and creating a national register of licensed landlords we will give local authorities the power to end right to buy and we will abolish residential leas Cs and cap ground rents for a nominal fee so that everyone has control over their properties the SL GS in particular have also been campaigning locally for the introduction of the community infrastructure ly which would ensure when the Planning Commission is agreed developers make larger contributions to invest in local infrastructure to ensure it keeps up inre much to conservatives thank you for the question I think I agree with with quite a lot of what’s been said by some of my colleagues the first thing need to do is build more homes what I would say when we build homes we need to make sure we that suain that means we need to look at the traffic surgeries we need to look at schools and so particular the are have in these around traffic created and also kind of that working with with TR government things try to get us more cheap Investments more Miz and also traffic traffic Investments such as the the uh uh recy way the government funded recently in terms of of of buying one of the things that we’ve done is first buyers we increase St St threshold we pay that 3 425,000 I think that is is is helping first 10 buyers in the more expensive part of of of England to to get on Prop we we made that permanent we’re also continuing to support the health PR SCH which is where is% and people get 20% from the government make that okay yes yeah in terms because I know straight talking I try and be as straight talken as I can but in short um the labor government will land first time buyers with a tax bill of over £1,000 that’s £1,000 for first time buyes the conservative party whether you like the political speak or not they will help first time buyers first time buyers up to over £400,000 and that is in the manifesto so that is the short of it he lovely um La do you want to come back in on that conservatives to answer that one yeah I’m happy to answer that so over the last couple of years the Prime Minister obviously gained the confidence International Market that’s one of the Reas inflation think F said is Contin exension of continue that’s amazing you answer this morning wasn’t able to give an answer to Adit it was on Mond every single policy area okay to admit where that is coming from I asked a simple question we did not get an answer thank you thank [Applause] you okay so you know question was you know surv EV and High house prices the answer is under Party politics just you know got no Hope’s no chance you need intervention you need people really we must have any other social hous the only housing somewhere else exist the Aver Sal is 35,000 price of 400,000 it doesn’t so the only answer is and as Jack said we have to look out the infrastructure question the question on GP GP Sur NHS this all these are School placements but we have to be realistic social hous this will give people Ty person an opportunity and hey thank you Mr thank you question yes I was at the plane for the years of my SU of course sorry I’m going to sort of stop you there because I’m conscious of time but I don’t want B Council business in a parliamentary discussion sorry I’m s frustration um but it’s bough council issue it’s not a parliamentary issue sorry thank you um so moving on um does anybody have any points I’d like to raise about young people there a couple of hand up in Canada a father asking for his not down is there anybody who would vote against eia is that right me about this issue I’m sure other candidates have um I verses and if my if I become so Progressive that for me my life is not worth I would choose to do be assisted okay I will choose but that’s me we have to have safeguards against greedy families you know people who just want to get rid of someone because they’re a nuisance or they want their money or in their house this is the worry in s so so I do agree with you it’s terrible if that young I don’t know that case I confess if that young person is able to um communicate and explain they don’t want to die they shouldn’t be made to die it’s disgraceful is that what the case is could you could you tell me depression very clear the depression you have good and I don’t want to see no I don’t to see I don’t want to see that [Music] conservative so out people cly condition terminal was trying to replicate is D and I understand why that Cas but I never for assisted in the united kdom SAR Reas think op I don’t know this Cas of question so I don’t want to take it too much but I have seen instances for example in the Netherlands whereby someone who’s physically well has mental illness in their 20s um has effectively oped for this and I don’t think that is something that um we should be doing I also think it opens potential risk of you know when we see that social care pressures or when people are using perhaps their their earnings and social care settings pressure from families from doctors from people to take this course of action and I don’t think that’s the kind thank you a lady the Trump this isue you MP for w right so basically I would like to ask what you are going to do for the mental health services after a freedom of information request last year 20 suicides Happ been SL I found my neighbor hanging off for 18 years the Mental Health crisis team is in crisis they are not fit for purpose the ad social care is in crisis not fit for purpose send the send report for children not getting access to schooling is in crisis not a purpose I would like to know what the MP if you are an MP are going to has done nothing for over 20 OD years people are sleeping in gares sleeping in the historic Charities getting funding from this Council why they spend 54 million on the HQ and property in SL that belongs to the council is being left der we are walking through the High Street where there St experim there where people used to come from miles around this place is being failed by both the labor party and the conservative party and I was from the conservative party because they wanted me to do deals with certain communities didn’t you do thank you very much and way punched me thank you very much right okay can I go to Liberal democrats for that one [Music] please I think we’re going to split this one too so I’ll take mental health J will take ad social um so the liberal Democrats want to put Mental Health on equal footing to physical health um we it’s something we’ve been campaigning on for a very long time and we’ feel very passionate about it um we want to improve Early Access to Mental Health Services by establishing mental health hubs for young people in every community and introducing regular mental health checkups at keep in people’s lives when they’re most vulnerable to mental ill health we also want to put a dedicated ified mental health professional in every school we want to extend young people’s Mental Health Services up to the age of 25 as people are too often forgotten when they reach the age of 18 and we want to introduce a target of one hour for Handover of people suffering from Mental Health crisis from police to Mental Health Services and because this is something that the conservatives have actually been AED on recently um and lastly we also want to ensure that all police forces have a mental health professional in the control room at all time so PR had to deal with this um yes so so we had this question about um about suicides very good question I just want to the adult social care angle to it that we need to fix adult social care there’s too many people in hospital who should be social they knowwhere to go it’s actually one of the biggest coms we have in the NHS so one of the things we do that we said on the NHS we need to the GP GP down you that’s the front door but then the back door is is adult social care so one reason why there are lots of people in hospital because we’ve got these people who should be in Social care but they can’t go there so um look it’s also social the biggest cost Council stat have to coun and it’s demand so you don’t know how much it is what we said is that on that the local Council National coordination both to save costs and to improve outcomes now just want to change the subject the question there was a question before wasn’t there I do want to it just personally so I actually agree with what a couple of others have said here but I completely completely appreciate and understand and have sympathy or the pain that some people go through um for example towards the end of their life I know how but I’ve got eny there there is a big here with here is that I do want it’s not going to be People Like Us who if you like and got opinions it’s people who are more vulnerable I just fear and I think it’s inevitable that vulnerable people will feel they have to end their life because uh you know will do that so no I would not support thank you already of last yeah yeah that’s a good point um I’d like bringing the gentleman on the far side if I Maya I take a microphone rounds if you can a [Music] microphone talk about mental health and I think it’s possibly one of the most important issues um that we’re facing but trly biggest pressures that have led to the Mental Health crisis in this country been 14 years of unnecessary theological driven austerity by the conservatives that was um enabled by five years of coalition government liberal Democrats so s here but what they’ve actually got a record of is Cuts Savage cuts that have left the vulnerable the weak and the destitute in positions of absolute and I would love to hear what the conservatives have to say that’s fine conses a couple minutes to work that [Music] outa then I’ll go to Chelsea which is to reply and then I give reply [Music] sir say the numbers of suicides we currently see in the UK is unacceptable I sadly know a few young people sues and the impact has on their family and friends is heart there is Mental Health crisis and sadly the services that provide people all do not currently have the capacity and resources they need the green party would create greater parity between physical and mental health to ensure that the NHS is properly funded now and in the future there are also other factors in this this to the Wi issue of adult social care for example often when people are undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues they will self-medicate through alcohol substance use unfortunately for these people many with many Mental Health Services will not see a patient if they report to using substances and instead referring to addiction and Recovery Services such as the one I work in this creates a vicious circle where because of their untreated mental health issues they struggle to resolve their substance use issues which means they cannot get access to the mental health treatment their needs and deserve m ious must and I really to see thank you very much let get to Liberal democrats for their right of apply and I’ll after yeah just a quick point that the but we mitigated many decisions that the conservatives made since now the proof of this is that look just consider how we were in 2010 the the country had the lowest in G10 in the G7 and in 201 by the end of Co have the highest growth in the G7 and then that continued until q12 2016 and then something happened in the middle of 2016 where all went long I wonder what that was now look in terms of cuts you said about cuts um absolutely look cuts and we did not do any we do with any pleasure but let’s just remember going into that election the labor part and the liberal Democrats were promising about a similar level of C conserves were promising double the Coalition actually delivered n on exactly what laor and Lial Democrats had promised as to where that fell the way that we approached it was that actually we cut at at the top and work down which is almost the opposite of the way the conservatives normally do it did we get wrong absolutely ex absolutely got things wrong but when you look at the chaos of the last nine years this is a thing we talk about 14 years it’s worse than that it’s taking just the conservative just not to screw it up hey thank you very much [Music] conservatives um you know I already not a political but what I can do is know by the data and by the facts that I do see of course you know it’s easy to have a my media bash the conservatives for what they haven’t done so I didn’t go they have done each year in real terms the conservatives have put money into the NHS they have done that they had the conser also publish a prevention strategy on suicide in 2023 that includes Financial investment of 10 million increased funding for NHS mental health 2.3 billion now these records are available for anyone to look up um special support for middle-aged men the highestate of men male death is suicide not just in this country but in the world so we put money into that expansion of mental health in schools exploring how to restrict availability of lethal substances building Partnerships across NHS private sector and volun sector now this is just some of the stuff they can they have done there is a lot more or if you look it up and find out what they do you will find that information yourself it’s on sites that are credible it’s not just newsy or sound are based on data andess okay no iagree I don’t think question because I don’t want I don’t want the question to get personal that’s no [Music] that’s a different question yeah yeah so it’s about access to Services as opposed to a personal question of have you ever that’s that’s probably not appropriate if that makes sense yeah that’s [Music] fine a young man been patiently sitting there question I’ll come to him in a minute that promise yeah yeah that’s a promise that’s it is a real promise he’s he’s one of our more elction candidate so he’s get very excited for the big ballot next Thursday okay um I I work time about mental health with mental health people and I told you by a labor Council of a lot of Mental Health Services I had a shocking case recently of a man who is threatened very bad threatened and his family and he was so worried by and upset he went to W hospital because he hadn’t slept the days and days and days all he wanted was something to make him sleep he was sectioned and put in Prospect Park then moved to Mone then back to PRP par he was be up by people in the hospital and then he discovered he never actually been section it was all illegal he was Inon like one who over cook M this is the sort of State the system that we have and it’s terrifying and it can happen to any one of us at any time there is no mental health treatment this now I don’t believe it I’ve not seen he thank you very much um can I bring in can I bring in the labor candidate please years I was always volunteering the mental health and I used my home as a refuge for girls with domestic much thank you very much can I can I just move this discussion on please move this discussion on yes please I want to bring this back to the substan issue because it is a really really important we need to look at this it suicide disproportionately affects men in our country three quarters of suicide victims are men suicide is the second biggest killer for all young men we need to address this and we need to be serious and not almost take the politics out of this and actually look at the humanity and then want to come locally so both s and V constituencies come under East B healthare and our count service is the same for both constituencies now we look at what has happened in our camp service over the last 14 years first of all on average now over half of Serv but half cases that are referred to C get discharged without ever being seen by a physician that is half of the cases that get referred never see a doctor never have a crage and yet they get told go elsewhere and then on the other half that do eventually get to see somebody who is a specialist in this area they you’re having to wait over two years and two months on average now if you are at a point of crisis in your mental health having to wait two over two years to access that special support is not going to help anybody and it is going to exagerate the problem that we are seeing on our do day so what we need to do is we do need to make a significant social investment into this service ultimately it saves lives now that means we need to have mental health workers embedded in each and every school we need to start the talk about mental health and mental Wellness actually this isn’t just about when you are in a b of crisis we need to be promoting the idea of mental Wellness in each and every one of us and we need to be having that conversation in schools the other aspect is for that the young adult period so the party is proposed bu this first time of government to hire an extra 8,500 mental health support club workers who will be invested in every every Community providing support up to the age of 25 this is the type of preventative work that we need taking place in our communities so that when and I will say men because it is disproportionately men but when men in our communities are feeling that crisis they can access that support at the time they need it in their communities and at a place that works for them that is how we need to shift the system in is and we do need to shift the conversation to mental Wellness rather than mental crisis and doing that would enable a whole societal change and how we Tre this very serious issue lovely thank you very much right then great you want to ask your question quickly and then we’re going to wrap up with the final question of the evening I promise finish my nine that’s a big promise U this is a question direct those parties and independent campaign to 16 years old how are you deal with the potential of unseriousness with those and lack of understanding in the chice they will come as the labor party I’ll come to you first yeah I that been a longterm campaign V and the council pass a motion this AG at firstly there isn’t an intelligence test or seriousness test for any apprach of any age so the idea that 16 to 17 year olds are somehow uniquely unqualified to be able to vote I just don’t believe and I just completely reject I also think if you think about the IDE of voting is about who we believe has a stake in the future now likewise I equally believe that 16 and old have as much of a state in the future of our country as anybody else does so I’m personally in favor of it I’ve been in favor of it for a long time and I’ve been campaing for it for a long time and icome change coming [Music] forward in social media stars as joke going into politics so for example Rama he’s running for um same constituency that um with that happening these people these people between 16 17 there people they up to in social media probability that they’re take it seriously see I I hear what you’re saying I agree you given I think standing 11 conses for me that is an argum for regulation social media that is not an argument against 16 and 17 year olds to and actually if we were to have that conversation which is a very serious and Val I would rather people that are the main consumers of that model are part of the decision making process how we do there thank you pass to sim actually the workers party just see person me I don’t agree with age when I back when I was 16 and 17 I could care less the politics did not follow me at all um but if it were to happen we need more political education I think introducing politics at a younger age will help student young people make more important decisions and I think that it helps now when when all these parties come and make these promises make these pedes make make all these things saying that they make things happen young people even 18y olds don’t truly understand what’s happened because they hav’t that you know you need to read the manifesto research you look into these parties their past and their present so I think political education is key and I don’t personally age with their Eng that’s perfect plug for the New Politics Department sub thank you very much uh Michael great so um yeah it’s a big question and I understand your point about social media St potentially get but this has always been the case you’ve always had parties like monster ra party and these other entities that Lord bucket heads um you’ve always had these entities and they never really make a significant impact any election general election I in principle do think that paying ad is the [Music] most think old actually coming to places like and also it made me realize how astute that younger people are with politics far more as than I was when I was 16 and it’s great to see that I think and I think yeah I I believe on principle the cl to 16 is a positive step forward to allow young people to be part of democratic process and have a voice in their sorry sor like for as a joke I don’t think we we have seen it to this extent because social media is such a huge platform and you have all of the children’s eyes on you see it everywhere you see children six or and exposed to people on the internet so your point that um they haven’t gain traction so far is purely because of the fact that it stays to the at because most age is 18 so the 16 16 it’s a huge it’s hugely different demog those which [Music] wills and have potentially negative effect on the people of personally I I’m not sure it would have that impct um most people in their when they get to their 20s and mid 20s late 20s they’re not going to be interested in voting for social media St national election I I do understand that it may they may go share much like you know once party get V sh sometimes and so on but I really really don’t see it as something that’s going to make a huge difference to a national election I do think does encourage younger people to go and vote and I think that is hugely important so um I think it’s a if they first time to go and vote they go and vote for new um and if they go and then vote again next election probably you know for social media St at least they I’ve voted ever since I had the opportunity to and I think young people in politics is hugely important i r my first election at the age of 24 um as a council candidate in wi labor party actually and um I I’ve always encouraged some people to be involved politics us voting or and iach everyone here today here today do inv but right I I am going to move on um sorry yeah I’m going to let the young people so I’m sort of like taking that towards the young people so I know that there’s two hands up and that Chelsea would like to answer questions as well um yeah so um yeah you can choose Y come then you got the power okay so I know want to finish this up by and I just have a question about Service Direct that so I know that I I therefore only let I know not announce the policy to ince service in 18 old or young people and I just wanted to ask because of all the things that happened under such pmic how that was handled and how that our schooling ucation and our mental health and then considering the fact that not could spend a day doing performing international memorial service on Tuesday in I just don’t understand why we as young people have failed by govern before as long as we can remember should have to be willing to sacrifice our lives and again considering the fact that it would be punished by prison a PR sentence if you decid not to go ahead and where you also see a class difference between the low class people who are disadvantage and can come Advocate themselves as well as middle and upper class people who will then escape this national service and then will not have to experience the same suffering that we as as low or not as not as low young people will have to I just don’t understand why that policy was created in the place and why we should have to [Music] [Applause] the dce [Music] cavior I recogniz never ter national service point I think it’s been quite misrepresented but I also AC conservative national service me something people think about what is national service they think my Granda I I don’t think that is the proposition I think the idea is a very small section of the opportunity what I think is better described as policy is compuls National citizenship service and that is something I would support so for example I did the V award as an 18y old I went to a conference Town Manchester and I think those of us who did that that was an incredible um opportunity really to give us exposure and opportunity that we’ never had so I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to do things like J War things like the national citizenship service so I support that element of of of what we’ve called national service policy in this but I wouldn’t at all support a national service uh proposal Which senate to the I don’t think I M want to come in do you want to come in no you okay there’s a Gentleman Just in the in the audience the second row this is a follow up I presume it’s the same top yeah talk about the national CI service I did that 2 years ago it cost me50 at the time I went for year year a week Vol one week since when I Vol two years ago up it’s dou almost uh it used to be two weeks from home one week the F gone down we to used to be just years so I didn’t know that that’s the you can try to tell about my experience what thank you um many years and I’m aular organizer and what I don’t want to see is soldiering on the and there very support as it is that people have come out with forces and they come out with PTSD and mental health isues and they just done and so many of those homus on the streets the veterans so no I don’t support this this gamee at all and I hope that you will vote it down whichever of us get selected but we will vote this down the people shouldn’t be used as can I going be bringing Chelsea in Lial Democrats final word on this topic and then we’ll move to our final question I’m super excited they don’t know it’s coming so I just felt like I had to come back on this as a young person about um votes for 16 and 17 year olds um my challenge to you is what is wrong with having a social media person as an actually I feel like it might it might do us some good um we’ve seen in the past people from all to life becoming MPS valeni Ukraine was an actor Ronald was an actor what is wrong with people coming from different professions can I finish um actually we’ve got social media Stars at the moment who are really advocating for getting young people involved in politics so Sharon GAA from island is really advocating for people to get involved with voting to get involved in politics actually they have a voice and it shouldn’t just be a specific the type of person that becomes a politician so actually thinking about having social media stars as politicians maybe that’s something we need to think about in the future but again I just want to reiterate some of the things some of the points that other people have made about you can go in the army you can get married why can’t you go you have to start paying taxes at 16 you should therefore be able to help decide how those taxes are spent and it it find quite insulting on behalf of young people that you would say only young people going to be influenced negatively in the way they vote based on what they see on social media as someone who I’ve already said I very passionate about Europe I was very young at the time of the referendum there were people younger than me that weren’t able to vote and their future was stolen by all the people who voted us out of the EU people who followed the people who follow the political opinions ofage who arguably is a social media St so I think I think [Music] it’s um there’s a couple of hands up so Thomas just days PR question you got the this is mainly directed at the party or any other party with some kind of house building program which is this if you’re going to be building thousands of new homes there’s a big problem with this nowadays which is uh the high amount ofs required to get those going which is part of the reason why hous building has been falling massively last few years do you see any reduction in those plan engs can I take one word answers or need some one with answers I can liberal Democrats please um having worked in local councils I can tell you that the problem isn’t the time that it takes to get plan permission the problem is actually developers not carrying through and building them out okay than lb we are need more plannings we are going to need to address the issue around instruction cost and delays we are going to need to address the issue around the skill shortage in this industry but ultimately we are going to need commission be able to more housing back end okay thank you is anyone going to disagree with that [Music] Michael last one well not quite disagree but what I would say is that we we should relax coming planning for BR sites so getes to [Music] into okay I’m going I’m going to Guillotine that one there so um last question of the day then Dana number seven all I want is three words from each Chand okay so I’m going to start with Michael in the middle and then David and then it’s going to go left right left right okay three words is number seven Dana what are your top three priorities to young people my top three priorities the young people um I would say affordable education affordable housing and um I think Mental Health Services I think would be okay first one is hope hopefully give them aspirations and then we need to really create policies that will allow to move forward so could be funders placement properly it could be in regards to opportun for ring so hope and aspirations are two um the third one is just work side by side with the young people on this journey it’s going to be a long one long be painful and [Music] someid right affordable housing and health is serious as well we people but yeah thank you thank obviously better education opportunities and also safety we need to make people feel that they safe in the community and the belonging they need to get a feel that they part of the part of the government part of [Music] theuns as well the climate crisis and [Music] you said three words so I’m giv you three words and they support Sport and safy and those are the things those are the things I think young people [Music] need Chelsea fixing building more housing and fixing the climate crisis lovely thank you Jack and I think housing be there I think apprenticeships should be particular focus and I think as the economy turn is returning to economic Ro the opportunity I’m also actually answer the question words opportunity security and ambition lovely thank you [Music] and I don’t go sports I would say faith have faith in in your fellow man in your uh your colleagues at work um have Change the World um create economic growth and real opportunities by unlocking opportunities on your footstep on your footstep SL full of multinational companies you should be get those big p they should not just be with The Outsiders coming in and taking those leadership roles super thank you very much um Round of Applause please for our general election candidates I would now like to invite our candidates just to set together at the front for a photograph as I think this is a fairly unique experience having two constituencies having a hustings at the same time so be great to yeah need one taller I know [Music] one two [Music] [Music] you let me in let me in say [Music] what [Music] let’s get a pictures of you just put this speak in the [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] m com [Laughter] [Music] [Music] G [Music] I [Music] my [Music] [Music] I know sh SU [Music] s l feel [Music] [Music] to beain Sol EU [Music] they [Music] um [Music]
