It all got a bit too much!

After four days of riding on very mixed terrain, the off road sections and climbs saw us tired and touchy! We were lucky to be accompanied by viewer, Paul, who led us through Hartlepool and Sunderland, distracting us with his local knowledge. The day started with an impassable track that saw us lifting heavy bikes over five gates. And when we were at our tiredest, we hit a hard section of the famous Cinder Track which had been damaged by torrents of water, leaving the section nearest Scarborough the worst hit.

I’m not flavor of the day at the moment no you’re eating on your own today yeah well good morning it’s uh what day four day four today uh I have to say we’re feeling quite tired it’s uh the cumulative effect I think we riding every day yeah done a lot of climbing yesterday was just horrendous into wind 7 M hour in our face all the way mely absolutely got worse in the afternoon we stopped in the Premier in here in Whitley Bay have to say it was very nice it was lovely yeah we had a good dinner and uh we also had breakfast I’ve had a big breakfast this morning so I should be do I should be on uh Rocket Fuel oh God so hopefully today will be a little bit easier it’s going to be quite different because obviously we’ll be doing a bit of City riding so we’ll be cycling through Sunderland and heartley pool and then we get to our stop tonight which is Middlesboro it’s about 53 mil today 86 km and thankfully Paul knows the area so he’ll be guiding us through sundland which will be very helpful isn’t this good this is fantastic cycle infrastructure isn’t it you know we’ve got a a proper separated Lane I know it’s quite new but it’s really impressive although it is saying Road closed here Wendy but we’ll go for it we’re putting lines in for the cycle freeway so we’ve just been through tin mouth and this is tin mouth the mouth of the th so you say that’s South Shields over there is it yeah yeah that’s South Shields yeah uhhuh wow what a view isn’t it superb I think some people get the impression that the north is grim dark you know industrial yeah but of course that’s changed oh enormously our Lords on the key w we were due to go under the uh Time Tunnel and your sat now says take the ferry it does doesn’t it yeah Wendy was all excited about going under the tunnel and now she’s even more excited spotted the ferry a but when the butt comes [Laughter] in probably a shortcut across as well yeah might save time save our legs yes does this count on you craa can they go a bit faster I probably won’t leave for another hour though when you leave oh even better at least there’s no F today on the D don’t I’ll have that song on my mind all the time now I think I’m bank and there’s a little calf in the end of the course toour markers and all that he probably mov down there yeah thank you so much so wrong Lighthouse oh and this is Seaburn not Roker there’s the lighthouse I’m not going out there yeah we are we’ll be all right you tell you I’m not going out there she going to the psychopath yeah again look at this stunning psychopath so we’ve now met up with Paul he knows the area well so he’ll know what not to do he’s promised us zero Hills I think he has let’s hope so he’s going to for Pace River we Another River crossed so what’s this place Paul this is a souen right and what’s all this we on is this coal slag this is the old coal slag PES right p with us thought we’ have lost we’d have thought we were definitely off rout there’s so many roots there there there they put a brand new path in which is the only new path that goes to see him uhhuh a lot of people go that way in along the course Road obviously got some Steed Hills there but it’s beautiful ride ah unfortunately this bit has never been done a shame speak but this is still on Route One this is this is actually route one yeah yeah the reason for this cold tip here is because this would deep in the Durham coal fields as was are there any mines still open uh no just the museum yeah You’ never come down here on a an evening really definitely not well we just arrived in Harley pool expertly Guided by Paul thank you thank you and uh yeah really appreciate you you taking us through here it’s really really interesting and it’s been an honor to meet you no not not at all no the honor is ours but you bought us to see the heartley pool monkey and uh from what I know of this there’s a legend I think that the locals hung the monkey thinking he was a Frenchmen now sorry French people if you’re watching this but uh that that was back in the day when people didn’t know what Frenchmen were they just heard about the Napoleonic Wars and French people invading so when they saw somebody that wasn’t like the rest of us they hung him got the FP go on are we ready yeah to make a wish whoa well done right they wish for good weather for the rest of your journey correct and the wind behind us so you can see over there the famous transporter bridge now you’ve seen it yeah so we have seen it but we changed the route slightly because Paul said that coming from the bridge the way we were going we would be on a really busy road with lots of lorries and so on so he’s taking us around this quiet route that uh misses it but at least we can see the bridge well good morning day five isn’t it yeah and we’re heading today to scarra we overnighted in Middlesboro and it was a bit of a pain in the neck because Premier in you know you can take your bikes into the room which is fantastic but uh no lift no lift I was on the third floor Wendy was on the second so it was a case of lugging the bikes up uh which was I wasn’t happy about no no air conditioning in the room and it was stuffy but my room had got a fan turned the fan on and it was broken so frankly Premier in Middlesboro by the hospital you’re rubbish you needed a bit of TLC all in off the staff were friendly enough and I asked the question uh this morning about the lift when’s it going to be fixed she said well hopefully in a couple of weeks we’ve had a quote so not impressed No it should be straightway repair shouldn’t it so Premier in management are going to get a letter so this morning we’ve left middlesbor and it was a pretty Rotty path out but we were soon out of that and we’re now in the grounds of the National Trust Ormsby Hall although we were very tired last night we neither of us slept very well apparently no so but hot but immediately we’re back on the bike it feels fine left yeah bit rough is it along here we’ve been traveling at times when the schools are either going in or coming out and it’s a real education on how poor the standards of driving are we just had a woman in a Range Rover stop right at the mouth of a junction to let her little chair about girl of about 14 that could easily walk y but no she had to stop right at the junction any other day we’d be saying how delightful these traps are but today we’re just looking for smooth hello babies hello oh you’re loud you’re gorgeous come on there you’re very [Music] noisy AR you yeah got to go [Music] now got to go now it’s time to go oh is it locked yeah that bolt across means you can’t get around it we’ve had to lift our bikes over three gates because the farmer had locked them and when we should have had a left turn the farmer had plowed the field up across the footpath and it was a real deep plow so there’s no way we were walking that so we’re continuing now along long a path hoping we can get out the other end but uh it’s looking a bit iffy now when IID planned this route I did look at the satellite image is and this one looked okay but uh it’s not so I think we’re now on about what A fifth gate fourth gate oh God uh we’re hoping that once we get up to this Farmhouse we’ll pick up a road now we’re staying in the travel lodge tonight in scarra and the rules are you can take your bike in your room but it’s got to be clean so I think we’re going to need find a jet wash at some point dip it in the sea now this is a foot path but uh well I think it must be a bridal way because it came up on the map as a bike route oh that was a toil wasn’t it so how many five was it about five five gates and then to get out of the field we had to get across a barve wire fence the only saving grace was the electric fence wasn’t switched on oh God I made Wendy test it but uh we’re out we’re out we’re on the track unfortunately we’ve not uh Gone very far we’ve done 6 and a half miles God and uh it’s 9:21 what time did we leave about 8 8 so it’s Tak us an hour and 20 minutes to do 5 miles oh God it’s going to be a long day we we got to pick up a bit during in the day but we we won’t be able to downhill we will it’ll be what it’ll be this is all part of the adventure though isn’t it you see yes but this is lovely track yeah don’t know where it went to and why we couldn’t get on it earlier no because it was showing us the route was very clear wasn’t it yeah till we got to that plowed field I think this is no very way to tr yeah it was yeah it’s a clue isn’t there I’m thinking oh this would be horrible to come up but I fear yeah on the other side that’s what we’re going to be doing there’ll be the the equal and opposite yeah we just met a couple of uh local and they weren’t cyclists but they they were obviously local to this area and they said oh you got a lot of Hills ahead oh that’s the sea but then one of them said oh it’s not too bad after the next one so we’re going to go with him rather than the finally we can see the sea yeah there’s the sea so we hugged the coast for quite a while now yeah this is a little downhill is it gosh [Music] lovely [Music] woo yeah we’ve come to a path and it’s telling us that the path is closed because there’s a large sink hole so Wendy’s just being up to do a bit of a wreck what’s the verdict it’s quite a long way up is it is it rough when you get to the top yeah it’s a path it’s not uh it’s not great do you want to do then I don’t know should just go to the front and see if there’s another Crossing wow not a lot here and put your top on yeah yeah bloody H he said this was a steady climb he said he goes up gentle don’t stop up there I thought it was going to roll all the way back down the hill now I’m walking I’m definitely walking I’ll bleep that bit out shall I lovely views oh God at least we’re not going up those steps oh spe pulling on the left oo that was exciting wh town this is where we are there’s a clue on the bus everything’s looking all pristine for the season you know everything’s just immaculate yeah it’s certainly a Grand Old Town isn’t it Victorian beautiful of course the famous setting for Bram Stoker’s Dracula and of course it’s a big Gathering Place for Goths and there’s a beautiful view of Whit ruins up on the top of the hill Cinder track where will it take you scar better hope scar we hope you want to go the other way left yeah can’t see anything how to be a bit taller I can I don’t see a thing this is a long slow gradient up isn’t it is isn’t it imagine that the trains having to do it yeah been steam trains they yeah like Thomas right Thomas going I think I can I think I can I think I can I knew I could I knew I could just keeps going yeah must be great going the other way yeah we keep saying that surely we’ll get that on the way down to scar well the fortunately so far today I don’t want to speak too soon and put the mockers on it but we’ve only had a sprinkling of rain it hasn’t really affected us no we’ve very very lucky we have but we keep putting our jackets on and off mainly because of cold winds cold winds yeah Wendy’s got hers off at the moment I’m still on so well it’s just this long climb it takes out of you doesn’t it it’s very draining well what have we got left now 18 and 1 half miles what you said 19 about 6 miles ago it’s cuz we’re going slow yeah this is hardly noticeable as a climb but it’s sapping isn’t it yeah just goes on and on but when they say Yorkshire is God’s God’s own country God clearly isn’t cyclist he wouldn’t have put all these Hills in maybe it’s where everybody goes good God Not Another Hill Hill yeah I think I’ve got to admit I’m just not a hill climber well no me neither and when you consider you know we got heavily Laden bikes but it was quite nice back there when uh what was it two days ago when that guy was trying to come up behind us on the hill yes and he couldn’t make it couldn’t overtake us could he no no and he didn’t have any bags on no and he was about half our age well my age anyway could stay there Roy yeah accommodation I’m tempted well we’re still going up but we’ve now lost that lovely hard surface so it’s a bit rougher bit more sapping Thomas has went out of steam yeah I think he needs another shovel of coal doesn’t in his fire box surely this must be the top I do believe we’re going down well you’re I’m thinking I’m not been pedling as much yes it’s a bit uh it’s a bit early to be going down for scarers so yes that’s a worry it is rather worry this loose gravel’s a bit iffy you want to come over I think I will yeah thank you wind is behind me at the moment but I can tell you there’ll be another wow moment any moment now wow look at the view don’t feel you going down do you it’s weird Roy what have you seen what’s ahead of us I have oh dear it wouldn’t be so bad if all this climbing got you somewhere but you just come down again I knew there was another climb yet today oh there’s a way around good get ready to go [Laughter] go this is like going through the Enchanted Forest it is it’s tree lined isn’t it us seems a bit narrower than earlier [Music] [Music] they make it worse by putting the stones in AR they they do yeah this is obviously where all the water runs down the middle isn’t it yeah I can see the climbs coming [Music] up if it’s on this surface I’m walking same here [Music] this is just [Music] hard oh bless oh yeah not wanting to go any further I should have to feed you some doggy treats get you up there no add enough not going any further yeah some of this Trail has been really rough in places but uh others it’s great so I think if we hadn’t been so tired we’ have enjoyed it a bit more but uh here we are so that’s robing Hood’s Bay ahead of us my sister’s going to go and get us a bucket from boys which is 2 minutes away perfect yeah we’re staying in the travel lodge tonight and they won’t allow bikes in if they’re dirty and ours are dirty hello please tell me that’s the top you’d hope so cute bridge isn’t it doesn’t look big enough does it probably was when that was built little cuy BD it’s more like a Canal Bridge now we’re motoring at last we’ve got along downhill 9 miles to go and we’re hoping it’s 9 miles of downhill we started out the day knowing it was going to be tough so we actually made our apologies in advance for if we got stroppy and a little while ago I got stroppy cuz I thought she was going the wrong way she got stroppy cuz I got stroppy yeah and I was I was wrong so had to apologize but apart from that is that’s the only stroppy we’ve had that’s not going exactly that’s the only Fallout we’ve well we haven’t even fallen out yet this time takes so much concentration doesn’t it this even though you’re going downhill it’s my little hands are so tired from pushing you know yeah so we’ve just arrived in scabra eventually because some fool put the premier in address in yet we’re staying in Travel Lodge and yes that would be me but we’re here now we have a yeah an extra 10 minutes cing chorus of Seagulls yeah we we we’d really had enough that Cinder Trail or track was awful at the end uh so we’ve really had enough and then of course then we had to rigate to the travel lot so I’m not flavor of the day at the moment no you’re eating on your own today yeah so
