Hi guys, setting off on a tour next week, and a little confused as to where to go towards the end of my tour. My tour starts in France and goes as far east as Bulgaria (I may clip into Turkey depending on this Bulgaria route), once I get to my most Easternly point, I basically loop back and head back towards home.
Im just a little confused as to where I should go in Bulgaria, it's a big country and I really have no idea how to tackle it. A few places on my radar that I would like to see but totally arent crucial, are: Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and the Buzludzha monument which is conveniently near to Veliko Tarnovo.
There's a eurovelo route that runs down pretty much the whole south border of Bulgaria, I think Ill definitely start from there. I then basically have no idea from there…
As you can see below, there are a few SUPER rough ideas in my head. The one mapped out by cycle.travel is the longest one that sticks on the whole of the Eurovelo, and then follows national cycle routes almost tracing around the country. Red route is a slightly quicker version, using that part of the eurovelo that sticks in to cut a corner off to Burgas. Blue is short and ticks off all the 3 places I wanted to see, however im off of cycle routes completely which i generally like to stick to in countries a little out of my comfort zone (mainly for dogs). Green is a simple and quick route, follows the eurovelo, but then again misses pretty much most of Bulgaria.
Would be amazing to know any suggestions that you have. I always prioritise safety and enjoyable/scenic roads, avoiding tiny back streets where dogs are more of a threat. Views, landscapes, monuments, landmarks and interesting cities are all a big bonus. Doesnt seem like there are any bike routes at all in the centre, would be good to know if youve been through there successfully?
Many thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing and chatting to you guys.
