This week on the Fozcast we have World Cup winner and current Aston Villa GK, Emi Martinez on the pod! I think we all remember that last minute save from Emi in the dying stages of the World Cup Final… In this clip, Emi breaks down the save in every bit of detail and what he was thinking in that split second!

just want to let you lot know that if you’re watching this clip on the fast YouTube channel the full episode is now available to watch exclusively on Spotify and it’s free come on should we do some World Cup chat oh we got to do world all right this is the bit earlier right when I was prepping for this Emy I was giggling to myself honestly I was so excited about this giddy is what I was right giddy so um we got to start with so forget the rest of the game right the rest of the game was incredible it was fantastic it was about as good a not even World Cup fight as good a game as football as you could wish to watch wouldn’t it or a guaranteed playing as well it’s like it was written by a Hollywood producer or something it was phenomenal right I’m going to transport you though to the 122nd minute and 40 seconds 42 seconds actually and col moani um just gets put through um and I want to know now from a goalkeeper P perspective everything absolutely everything everything that’s going through your mind Cuts I want to know you technical details everything that’s gone on break it down for me Emmy um the first thing I always say I didn’t think it was that good to save you know wow I made I made better saves than that but um it’s just uh I expect end to miss the ball yeah you know you’d already read that I already look Ben I was having a a comfortable game you know really comfortable felt really good with the ball in my feet 75 minutes then I con seeed two goals or three goals in minutes out of nothing with two penalties and one goal with imp Pap maybe I should have a strong hand on it um and then I was so comt so calm in that situation for oh no ‘s going to miss it o going to miss it o is going to miss it and then he does it so then I’m I’m calm because I’m already expecting him to miss it so if you I’m not expecting endi to miss the ball I don’t think I’m going to save that ball and I’m you know I remember di Maria’s call against Brazil and the Marana when Edison came out and the Maria just Loop it over him so for if if you’re running he’s going to Loop it so Edison was running out towards him towards de Maria and we won the cup America because Di Maria Loop him yeah one one n so for that came into my head even though it was so close so said I’m staying and then how the ball was traveling then I was adjusting to the ball uh because if I was staying too deep he had a pass he could Square the pass into I think it was in so I thought okay I I close the goal I close the goal I close the goal and then because you know Ben you’ve been a goalkeeper so if you run to him they they they still looking at you yeah even though his heads down even they down they can they can look at you so then you know any Striker Top Class Loop that’s see you lose the World Cup so for I keep my co I go into the angle and then when he’s about to shoot I fall you know I work with German goalkeepers with English goalkeepers and South American goalkeepers so for normally the German they stay up with the hands high and they just robotic the the English light they spread in South American they guess yeah that’s that’s a style so after if I guess and I guess wrong then game over game over so for If I Stay like German maybe you know you know you can’t really go sideways so and if I spread maybe I don’t cover the the how much I want to cover in this okay this is all going through your head yeah this is no more by the time he’s going to shoot say what am I doing you need to you need to make a decision or you go you stay or you jump or you go low so I thought look the the way I was cut in the angle diagonally I thought it’s if he goes across he got he can miss on the bullet you know if he goes across the ball is going away from the goal and I’m going that diagonally that way to the towards the left so I thought that left side is quite open because I’m going forwards I know where the goal is I know exactly where the goal is because I can see the penalty spot there so for he he’s going to go there but this is the the thing we work a lot is is body body shape regarding to the ball the ball is bouncing so I don’t keep my hands low you know normally it’s a one V one low you keep your hands quiet low yeah you know the ball is bouncing so thought if I keep my hands low I leave all this open so I thought I’m guessing we actually diving that it’s going to go left so my left leg and my left hand is really strong like you know you put rock all your hands so for please hit me my face straight to the ball and then I’m I’m praying that the ball is going to go left then you can save it or not but then I did not move you know keep myself Square so think just praying that it’s going to go to that site you know and this one and you just leave it just in case you know strong as well and it was so quick then then we nearly won it and then obviously after the game they they say was huge but at the time it was just so quick massive life everything he just said there is is is hours and hours and hours of work that he’s done over the years like holding his shape for long periods of time right and having the balls to go nah yeah like I’m not I’m not triggering I’m not falling back my hand position in relation to ball distance and body position in relation to ball distance is spot on and you ain’t beating me like you can see it’s just like I’m not conceding like if you stay up and hold don’t trigger don’t fall back so biomechanically perfect see like his shoulders haven’t rotated his hands haven’t triggered the body weight’s not falling back Face Forward can you explain what triggering is for the viewers please so a lot of a lot of goali is what goalies can trigger so as soon as the ball’s hit what does your body want to do like naturally your body want want to go coming quick split so a lot of goalies will trigger like trigger the hands backwards to come forwards but as soon as your hands go backwards how does that affect your body weight what’s your body weight going to want to do it’s going to want to send you backwards which means then you can’t get onto your leading leg you end up sweeping like things will go through you if you stay forwards and you keep your hands in good positions and you keep your chin forward and your shoulders forward you can react to the ball in Split seconds like you can and you will naturally cuz your hands will always move quicker than the ball right so your hands will move quicker than the ball ever does sorry mate so if you start to trigger then your hands can’t get to the ball cuz they’re moving it’s moving your body weight right so then you can’t get as soon as you come into neutral or negative then you can’t get onto your leading leg you can’t literally cannot transfer so that’s hours and hours of work like hold hold and like the stuff we did with the rebound there has helped him with that it’s like I’m going to have to hold I’m going to have to hold I’m going to have to hold and some of the saves that he makes from holding his shapes for a long period of time like and how quickly he can get onto his leading legs through holding shape transfer push holding shape transfer push not triggering doesn’t matter how fast that Ball’s coming how hard it’s hit or how close it is if you don’t if your body weight remains forward and you’re not triggering from the pace of the ball you’re going to transfer a simple way of saying it is is flinching basically a big way like if you watch that sa back in the World Cup no flinching just like holding holding the face the to to keep your face forward right when somebody is about to kick a ball from it’s hard y away human natural human reaction is to try and is close your eyes and you move your head to the side watch it it is face forward and it is if this comes right in my face I’m going to watch it please hit me you know so I’m like you know we to work a lot on we’ve got know I can’t beat you like I’ve got nowhere to go like if you hold and you don’t trigger I cannot score you’re the best in the world I can’t beat you I cannot beat you I cannot beat you and I used to say all the time but even now even though they working with the flection Nets and they said new way that I found is you know the medicine balls in the gym I I put you know those poles that when you put po to run yeah I put three poles and the medicine ball on the top in in between so it’s kind of like when you’re standing you can’t see the ball so you need to go down yeah and look it or you go high and may try it it’s perfect going goal Ben put three PS you know the the running po when you got s sack and put the medicine top the meding ball in the middle and going goal put two or three M just to try and see the ball just to try and see the ball become real it in the game and you know helmet John the fysio I I remember I had a hun dring injury so I trained few days with him I thought man this is great for goalkeeping so um I put in the but sometime put it 10 yards and then I start you know I like to catch balls every time catch catch catch catch so I was catching balls I said no no bring it 6 M now and then I was I’m pushing it now 4 M goes goes go oh and I’m working on four MERS yeah because I’m catching on eight I’m pushing away in six four so if I by two weeks I’m saving one you’re unlocking the next level then you go to three and then it’s like video game exactly I use it that way so I found way now it’s like a new toy for me oh I can’t see if anybody had any doubts whether goalkeepers are a different breed honestly this is this is it in a nutshell isn’t it this is I honestly think that if outfit orders had the same kind of interest in their craft the same dedication to the craft of stopping the ball going in the back of the net you’d have the best you’d have 11 Leno messy’s on the pitch every every Saturday afternoon but it’s as simple as that that’s important I think you spoke about John Whitney who’s a sports scientist strength conditioning coach mainly Outfield but with such an in-depth knowledge of the biomechanics or biomechanical movement that he can help you a lot could he probably helped you a lot within your within your Physio and your rehab like if you’ve got that in-depth knowledge of biomechanics and how goalkeepers moves huge thanks everybody for watching we hope you enjoyed this clip of the fos cast if you would like to watch the full episode it is now available exclusively on Spotify for free [Music]

  1. Watching this reminds me of how much I miss big cuts being at Villa .
He is an exceptional coach and if it wasnt for him Emi wouldnt be a villa player !
His place in our rise cannot or should not be underestimated ❤❤❤

  2. I’m never gonna forget that moment. All Kolo Muani had to do was dink it over Martinez and he would’ve won the World Cup for France, but no, he decided to boot the ball straight into him and completely squander the chance. Absolute moron.

  3. The whole world was so grateful for that save

It was a save that honoured maradona

Great explanation, and shows you how much training these people do.

  4. This was glorious! It reminded me of Robert Wyatt’s account of the incident that put him on the wheelchair. He said something like: “If I had been just a little more sober, I probably wouldn't be here today: I would have tensed my whole body with fear and so l would have smashed myself”. That passivity, that calm, that acceptance of your destiny in that moment… Powerful stuff.

  5. I didn't expect this calm very well spoken man after seeing him play ,hes an animal on that pitch!first time ive heard him speak, comes across really well 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✌️

  6. Adrenaline is a crazy thing. I was in an accident on my motorbike and in a split second I must have thought a full minutes worth of thoughts (genuinely thought I was a goner). I don't doubt for a second that A LOT went through his mind in those couple of seconds that when translated becomes a 4 minute monologue.

Gotta say as well – I still rewatch that final every so often. It had everything I could possible have wanted (except for the pens, would have been nice to have Messi score the winning pen). I hope England gets a final like that one day. Can't imagine the heart attack it would give me watching it live.
