250 miles through seldom-visited central Virginia/North Carolina, on quiet backroads, rail trails, and logging roads. Camped and cooked in wildlife refuges, parks, and a baseball field. Tried to make it to South Carolina coast but did not compete the 320-mile trip due to several days of torrential rain and a tight schedule. Pitstop in a pharmacy after learning that the ticks on my leg probably carried Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Brought a kickstand and a drawstring backpack, and picked up an American flag for protection. Great first trip.
