Ireland road bike tour cycling. Exploring the newly-built Limerick Greenway, Foynes, Rathkeale, Newcastle West, Listowel and Ballybunion. This greenway is the best maintained greenway in Ireland. Definitely meeting my expectation.
hello this is kittens cycling in Ireland today I came to visit the new Limerick Greenway which has opened about half a year ago so the surface and the condition of the greenway will be really great and I’m looking forward to it the place I’m staying in is PMB called The greenfields Farmhouse in SD a small town located Southwest of Limerick city I really had a great stay here not just the room and the food were great but also I had a lovely experience a milking cow yesterday because the hostess Mary kindly offered me to milk one of their cows and I’ve never milled any cow in my life before so it is a very valuable special experience so I started from BMB about 9 00 am in the morning and although the main destination of today’s cycle is the Limerick Greenway I’m not heading down there directly instead I’ll take a little bit of detour to the northern part of this peninsula and first go off to the small town called fines it’s a bit interesting because locals call it fines I think that’s a limerick dialect are usually doubling people call it phones and it’s also spelled phones anyway you see this is a lovely coastway which I really enjoyed and yesterday I was driving down this road from Limerick to BMB on my car and I decided I’m definitely gonna cycle this road and it is good as I expected so go off to the fines first and then from there head down to the town called last kill where the Limerick Greenway actually starts contrary to the popular belief and the name Limerick Greenway appears the actual Greenway starts not from Limerick but from wrath keel and it is supposed to be continued down to list all but currently only the section up to Abby field has been finished so from Abby feel off to bellybunion I will be taking the main car road instead now I’m entering the town finds and it looks like this town is famous for seaplanes and in the Town Center there is also a flying boat Museum that you can visit which I think is on my right yes it looks like a little bit like a Hovercraft when I searched Wikipedia they say that in the past where planes especially land planes that has wheels and requires runways they lack the sufficient flying range to go across the Atlantic Ocean so many seaplanes were active at that time and this town finds was the last port for seaplanes before going across the Atlantic Ocean now after about 40 to 50 kilometers from my BMB I arrived at the Town last kill where the Limerick Greenway actually starts like I said in the beginning the Limerick Greenway doesn’t start from limerick but it starts from this town at the start of the Green Bay there is a small car park as well as a bike hire where you can rent your bike for the day now this is the start of the greenway and since I only go on the long distance trips when the weather is nice you can see it’s the beautiful weather very pleasant to do a Greenway cycling as soon as I started cycling on the streamway I immediately noticed that the surface and the pavement of this Greenway is amazing at this point I’ve been to almost all of the Greenways in Ireland about maybe up to nine and ten and most of them are reasonably well maintained not all the potion of the greenway is Silky paved like this with asphalt and also you can see on your right the old station building which is now Obsolete and no longer in use and that’s one of the characteristic of this Greenways that’s built on the old railroad which is quite nice to pass by these old stations not just the surface of this Greenway but also the width of The Greenway from start to the end is really wide like this so there are plenty of space for Walkers joggers cyclists and you can safely stop overtake the traffic at any time the length of the screenway is I think currently is about 35 to 40 kilometers in one way and I think it will be a little bit longer when the when the last release toll section is completed in the future foreign passing over is called Ferguson’s Viaduct and I was looking forward to this because at the Waterford Greenway there is an amazing Viada called kill me Thomas Viaduct but it was about like a one-tenth of the size of that Viaduct so this wasn’t that really fancy good enough now I’m arriving at banark station and here is near Newcastle West and they have a something like complex code Limerick Greenway hub where there are children’s playground restaurant and Cafe and also bike lentils I’m coming up to the Bannock tunnel and I searched on Wiki and they say that this binoc tunnel and station was a really important place in the past where this Limerick Railway was in operation because you can feel that there is a little bit of slope in the greenway here which could be a quite challenging for the train and so when trains were traveling from east to west from Cork or Dublin they stopped at the spinox station for calls to refuel their steam carriages now everything that’s been turned into this wonderful Greenway and a nice place to stop for a rest because this walkway was quite narrow they had many signposts saying cyclists please dismount and you see that the whole Limerick Greenway is quite long about 40 kilometers which isn’t ideal for casual and family cyclists and walkers I think this binoc Greenway Hub is a perfect place for family and couple visitors they also rent a variety of bicycles so no worries even if you didn’t brought your own bike [Music] I was very thirsty at this time so I think I bought about three bottles of mineral water and we filled my bottles the green may have also has a cafe called platform 22. I suspect the name comes from the old days where the panox station was still in operation so perhaps the 22 means they train station platform 22. and I came up here to refill some of the caffeine that I really needed to pump up my energy and there’s put in children’s playground on the back and this is a quick cup of coffee I’ll be enjoying before hitting the road again yeah this is a indeed a nice place and if you want to experience the Limerick Greenway I think this is your best option after having a nice sip of coffee at Bannock Greenway Hub now I’m heading to the last destination of the Limerick Greenway which is the store oh and by the way I heard that the Limerick Greenway is supposed to go up to list total but currently the section between Abbey field and Listowel is under construction so you can only travel up to Epic field by Greenway and from there you have to take the car road instead so from here Listowel I can go straight back to my BMB but that will be only about 80 to 90 kilometers so I wanted to add like 30 to 40 kilometers more to my to today’s mileage so instead of heading directly back to my accommodation from restobel I will be traveling to ballybunion which is another main town in this Northwest part of County Kerry actually I was really surprised by the size of towns here because what I expected was like the lugged terrain of West part of Ling of Kerry but there are many towns and all these towns were quite big much bigger than my expectation so I didn’t record it in my video but especially the road from this toll to ballybunion wasn’t pleasant and it got worse because the time I’ve been traveling up to ballybunion was like 5 PM where people were going back to their home from the work so there were so many traffic on the road and it was quite painful both for me and the cars you know cyclists are always like an obstacles to the drivers but anyways I got compensated by this lovely Seaside View from bellybunion it’s up to and here nearby there is a famous tourist spot called balibunion Cliff walks but obviously I can’t walk that path on my cycling gear so I just went by but all these rural area of the northern part of ballybunian town was really nice especially now the sun is coming down and when heading back to my accommodation it was a great reward for me and this is me doing my final Sprint before the end of today’s cycling I think at this point it’s only about 501 kilometer away from my BMB and I’m pushing myself really hard before the Finish the total distance was about 130 kilometers so it’s not that really long so I just wanted to completely flatten out my all my muscle uh because I’m cycling almost every day and whenever the time permits I take my bike in my car and travel to these wonderful areas in Ireland so definitely I’m improving but I’m not doing that super rigid disciplined training that like a pro cyclists do so I’m improving rather slowly so I think my FTP currently is about 3.7 3.8 my goal is to hit more than 4.0 maybe next year so now I’ve arrived back at BNB and it was indeed a lovely cycle and the Limerick Greenway even though it is not the view itself is not as great as the Waterford Greenway which is my favorite favorite Greenway in Western Ireland but it was good enough and and I only see the aspect of the surface Paving and the Green bay condition Limerick Greenway is the best Greenway in Ireland Spectrum cycle yep and that’s it for today’s cycling and I’ll be taking taking a quick shower and eat some food recover and rest thank you for watching and see you in my next video yes
