Freiburg im Breisgau is a lively university city located in the south-west of Germany’s Black Forest. It is famous for its mild climate and its reconstructed medieval old town, crossed by picturesque streams (bächle). In the surrounding mountains is the Schlossberg mountain, known for its hiking trails and which can be reached from the city by the funicular. The city’s Gothic-style cathedral stands in the central square of Münsterplatz and its greatest attraction is its imposing 116-metre spire.
