I just dropped some coin upgrading the drivetrain on my single speed Surly Cross Check to convert it to a 1×11. I was trying to do it on the cheap, but ended up landing at around $800 after buying a new crank set, bottom bracket, derailleur, cassette, shifter, rear wheel, tires, and tubes.

Having a great time on the new setup, but am missing having drop bars (went from a flat bar to mustache bars).

What are the paths forward to get brifters (and thus drop bars) on my setup without breaking the bank?

  • brakes: Tektro M730 linear-pull v-brakes
  • drivetrain: Shimano Deore M5100 cassette & derailleur

I was looking at these Microshift SB-M110 brifters, but they seem to only work for short pull brakes. So, should I buy new brakes? Or is there a cheaper/simpler path forward?

I have considered the Surly Cornerbar but that seems limited on hand positions and not much of an improvement over my current mustache bars.
