Alex I’m the Vicor Chip is going to be leading the service Chris is going to be preaching and Tommy and Isabel are going to be leading Us in worship which is excellent so I’m going to just bear off this morning to spend some time with the Pathfinders and we are going to do some preparation for next week uh which is our all age communion service we are going to bake the bread together so you can look forward to that next week I’m going to freeze it in the inter room it otherwise obviously uh anyway didn’t know you need to know that the week after that is most excitingly of all oh no the week after that is Pentecost which is very exciting the kind of right after Easter and Christmas Comes Pentecost try and make sure you you can hear for that if you’re about at all that’s on the 19th May and then the following week most excitingly of all is our annual church meeting also known as the apcm or the AGM basically what will happen is we’ll have a shorter service in here that’s the first Sunday of halterm um and then we will have a little break and then we’ll have our annual church meeting which is a meeting where we talk about the business of the church so do come to that on the 26th of May 2024 then the prayer course continues uh this week and next week here in the lower Hall on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and finally if you were here last week you will have heard me talk about our new partnership with st orin’s Community Pantry with the the plan is to do community suppers here um every Tuesday um where they will uh cook the food and make sure it all happens we will support them with volunteers and with welcoming and stuff like that there’s going to be a trial one on Tuesday the 28th of May which is the uh the Tuesday of half term if you if by any chance you are not going away in half term and you fancy coming to help with that do let me know but also if it generally this is something you might be able to support in some way say one Tuesday a month or something like that um as we move forward assuming it goes well on the 28th then do let me know it’ be really good to have like a list of people who might be prepared to volunteer I won’t hold you to it uh I promise um but I might send you some emails right and I’m going to hand over to chip now to begin our service thanks oh yeah I don’t need this I’ve got one right so good morning what a glorious morning we have this morning I cannot believe the sunshine that’s out there and I am oh so grateful so this morning we’re going to be talking about or continuing our talk about communion and what it means and I I just want to share with you share get it communion sharing right there goes my Netflix special right okay anyway sharing is a big part of what communion is and it’s one of the most and one of the most awesome Parts about it is that it just doesn’t happen here at just St Luke’s it doesn’t happen here just in our dasis and it just doesn’t happen here just in England or even in the whole church of England it happens everywhere now some of you may know that I lost one of my brothers a few years ago now that that’s a bit careless of me I know and part of what I mourned and part of what I really miss about him is that he and I had well we were we were on our own so to speak before the others came along so we had this shared experience that only we had we only had we’re the only ones who had remembered what life was like in the Wilds of Minnesota and we’re the only ones who knew our family when it was very young so when we lost him I lost lost I lost everyone who the only person who had those memories besides me and someone that I could talk to about that and with communion we have a shared experience this is what’s so fabulous to me we have a shared experience with Christians not only here but over all the world across denominations across borders across oceans we all share in this communion and table and later later we’re going to have an opportunity to hear what Chris has to say about communion looking forward to it and and we’ll we’ll all be um oh lost my that Train derailed forget it let’s just take a moment let’s get our thoughts and Minds together come on chip um and just spend some time just quiet ourselves me included and spend some time worshiping and praising this God whose generosity and Grace Just blesses us all father God thank you so much for this Sunday this sunny Sunday morning Lord we come before you with hearts of gratitude you have seen us through another week and we stand at the threshold of a fresh Week full of new beginnings and Fresh Starts Lord help us start this bright embarking with you stir us in a deep desire to come into further relationship with you create in us an openness to forge bonds of a shared thank you want to have a seat we’ve come to this moment that we’ve come to expect about we call it moments of gratitude ude and it’s just a time in this world full of all kinds of bad news you know sometimes we watch the BBC and we just long for someone to do a feel-good story you know even if it’s about a dog that found its way home I’m desperate sometimes for just one glimmer of good news not likely but we do know that in our own lives we do have some good news to share with our our families so I want everyone to just take a five couple minutes five couple minutes and talk to the person next to you and maybe share something one good thing that happened to you that this week that that maybe was good and maybe maybe you feel like it didn’t really have a good week you can say that too we can be honest with each other so there’s an opportunity later after the service if you really need some prayer for that we’ve got a prayer group that’s just ready and waiting for you to come but for now let’s just chat about what the good things are that happen this week and I’ll have my microphone later and if anyone wants to volunteer and share some of these things that would be great so Talk Amongst yourselves even e [Music] you know what I me [Music] I forgot how well we chat as a church can we just kind start thinking about what we might want to say does anyone have anything they’d like to share with us today any hands oh there’s my friend Geraldine last week was a really bad week everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong and I wasn’t in a good mood but you know what today is Sunday hello hell um I’m here the sun is shining and it is brilliant because I can put all that Shide you know behind me and I can say it’s a new week it’s a new day come on Lord let’s do oh William uh now I’ve retired I do a lot more cycling and uh yesterday I had a puncture that’s the bad news the good news is wasn’t raining which nearly always happens when I have a puncture any others anyone else have a little something to share this morning oh oh that one do you have one oh yes but uh my god daughter had a baby yesterday Helen’s daughter so attacus and you I safely after a traumatic bit so we’re thankful that he’s arrived yay welcome baby attakus in the depths of the Children’s Corner are better you’re better were you ill well we’re really glad you’re better and we’re glad you’re here excellent all right thank you everyone for your bravery and your courage and I hope everyone had a good chat with their neighbors all right let’s just have a moment and think about all these really good things that we heard about this morning and all the things that we’ve shared let’s just have a little prayer over it Lord God our hearts are crowded with gratitude as we celebrate all your gifts Great and Small we have come to you with great joy and eagerness for we are truly grateful to you our God for all that we have been given and we pause now in silent prayer and do thank you for the great generosity of your gifts we also thank one another for their gifts especially the gifts of love and affection and support when we’re not having the best of weeks may you our God continue to bless us in your holy name amen now it’s time for the kidlets to head off to their place of fun I’m going to have to say a quick prayer over you guys Lord we pray for the children of our church Church may they come to know Christ and grow in their faith we pray that they build relationships during this times that will continue to grow in the future and give them a Christian Community to share we give thanks for our children’s ministry leaders and helpers and thank you Lord for giving them the tools and dedication needed to undertake this important work amen have fun storm in the castle kids right it’s been a really good [Music] morning but we all know that during the week sometimes we don’t get things quite right we maybe say the wrong word or think the wrong thing or maybe we forgot to we walked past someone who needed help instead of stopping to say can I help maybe we just didn’t give God the praise he needed or deserved so let’s just have a quick quick let’s have a meaningful moment of confession can say with me Lord you have given us a world of beauty and we have spoiled it a world to feed us and so many go hungry a world of riches and we are unwilling to share a world to care for and we think only of ourselves forgive us gracious God for those times your heart is saddened by our selfishness for those times we have no thought for others no cares but ours enable us to see this world a new as a gift from you it sh to be share and nurtured and those who live upon it to be loved and cared for we ask this that your name may be glorified through the beauty of this world and the service of Our Lives amen Lord we know that when we come to you with sincere confession we know that we will be forgiven because you are the great forgiver Lord by your grace let us us be forgiven in your peace let our lives be lived by your touch let us know your healing and in your strength let us be made whole for you are the one who forgives and restores us take our Mustard Seed of faith and let it grow let it take root let it blossom in our hearts and through all our life so that we can serve and glorify you in this broken world that surrounds us amen we come to a time of worship again with our talented Tommy and Isabelle if you feel able please rise if you don’t sit and sing and enjoy the music bless the Lord oh my soul oh my will open our ears open our minds and open our hearts that we may know you today for we ask it in Jesus name amen so as chips said uh oh yes do sit down as chips said a human ago we’re continuing our short series on Holy Communion that part of about half the services we have here where we all gather around the Lord’s table together um now those of you who have been here for the last couple of weeks will have heard Rosie and Alex uh talking about Holy Communion Rosie reminded us that communion has a number of different names it can be the Eucharist it can be the Lord’s Supper it can be Mass it can be is Sacrament and she offered as a beautiful definition of Sacrament an outward and visible sign of an Inward and invisible Grace I that’s just beautiful that was written by Austine of Hippo St Augustine of Hippo uh that is nothing to do with mud loving uh mammals uh hippo is uh is actually uh is nowadays it’s called Uh anaba and it’s a town on the coast of Algeria IA um we had another St Augustine okay um a bit later anyway that’s what Augustine of Hippo offered us and commun and and Rosie also told us that communion is a gift it’s a gift for us to receive to be fed by God then Alex came along and shared with us some tips on cooking chili and sleeping on hard floors you probably remember that bit um you may also remember that he he reminded us that communion is essentially a meal uh it’s a meal and crucially if you look right through the Bible whenever something interesting is happening when relationships are being formed food is involved there’s always a meal there’s something about uh we say formally breaking bread together but eating sitting down and eating together that seems very special time and again we see we see and read of people encountering God as they eat so communion is a place where we encounter Jesus Through the Holy Spirit yes we can learn about God through pre the preaching of God’s word through studying our Bibles we can come closer to God through sung worship that wonderful time when Words and Music just come together and we’re in a different place we’re singing worshiping together we can certainly encounter God there but we can meet God to as we gather together together at the Lord’s table Alex also reminded us that Covenant is a sign of the New Covenant that new promise that God gave us the gift of Salvation that God is no longer behind a curtain God is accessible God is there for us to find commun is where we encounter God is where Heaven meets Earth we gather together in one fellowship and Heaven meets Earth so what’s left to say that’s a pretty comprehensive definition of Holy Communion well I had what I thought was a brain wave halfway through last week’s service it was literally halfway through last week’s service I thought I’d ask you what you thought about Holy Communion and I would like at this point to to thank all those people who um are interrupted while they’re drinking their coffee and minding their own business what follows is entirely I promise you entirely unedited it is exactly what you said all I’ve done is I’ve grouped some of the comments into into groups okay so some of you talked about Holy Communion being a special time a special time really important it feels safe secure nurturing it’s symbolic it’s a moment to pause and reflect on why I’m here a quiet time to think reverently about God something I need to do when I come to church and then this last one is the repentance beforehand interesting the repent that time when we we come before God and we say actually we disappointed our we’ve disappointed you if we’re truthful we’ probably disappointed ourselves and we need to say we’re sorry and particularly at Communion we’re coming together and so we need to say sorry for those times and we haven’t shown one another the love that we perhaps ought to show the generosity as somebody said to me earlier showing one another love compassion generosity it’s important that we do that so back to the survey another group talked about remembrance and reflection remembrance a reflective space reflecting on what Jesus did for me reminds me of the sacrifice Jesus made for us chance to reflect on the last supper and reenact with all present continuing the sharing of bread as Jesus did the path that Jesus led so a strong sense that remembering the Last Supper the events of Good Friday and a time to reflect on Jesus’s sacrifice I’ll come back to some of those in a few minutes but let’s go on to the third group the third group talk about meeting with God now bearing in mind the 30 minutes before I talked to these various people they just heard a sermon from Alex all about meeting God some of them remember remember that and said commun is about meeting God so all those people get an extra gold star for listening here’s what people said it’s coming to the Lord’s table it’s knowing there’s always a seat at God’s table waiting for me it’s a feeling of God deep inside a real connection with Jesus beyond words feels holy it’s an opportunity to be real with my savior it’s strengthening it’s meeting with God throughout there’s a sense of deep personal connection with God it’s clearly a really important part of Holy Communion but the fourth and last main group came up with something else they told me of their sense of sharing and fellowship at Communion sharing a time of coming together a blessing for everyone it links me back with my Christian family Oneness with the whole worldwide Church remembering and participating together in celebration connection with other people of Faith across the world and back through time time to Jesus himself now I didn’t promise you I didn’t edit any of these just group them there were a couple of contributions however that defied classification I have called these the unclassified the first was this the Tuesday one is excellent now in case you don’t know this refers I’m sure to the Tuesday communion okay which Alex started a few some quite successfully some time ago now bearing in mind this comment was made just a few minutes after a Sunday communion it’s possible to interpret this a little ungenerously I choose to reinterpret so I have edited slightly I choose to read it like this the Tuesday one is is also excellent and the very last comment from somebody who is clearly on a journey lots of boring [Applause] litery now it may be that my face fell at that point it may be that I looked slightly less cheerful it may be even that I I I I shot a glance I don’t know what happened but immediately after that came this that’s what I thought when I was younger but not now again my very grateful thanks to all of you who contributed now Rosie Rosie and Alex of course spoke about a number of things that have been mentioned in the survey I want to concentrate on just a couple of them and the first one is sharing and fellowship the thought that communion is something that we do together not just as individuals but together it’s a shared activity it’s one that links us with one another only with Christians across the town across the country across the world and even back through time it’s something Christians have always done and always do today to do that we’re going to have a short reading the reading is from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians now in this letter Paul addresses some of the many challenges that church in Corinth is facing and the disagreements and harmful divisions that are happening by the way if you ever Despair and I do sometimes very occasionally of the church in the 21st century read Paul’s letters to the Church of Corinth they had problems them as well and Paul sought to uh clarify the way for some of them this time Paul is addressing the issue that some cor Corinthian Christians had of sneaking off to engage in Pagan rituals and idolatry clearly something they shouldn’t be doing so the reading is from 1 Corinthians chapter 10 and verse 14 therefore my dear friends flee from idolatry I speak to sensible people judge for yourself what I say is not the cup of Thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ and is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ because there is one loaf we who are many are one body for we all share the one loaf now Paul’s well known for using this analogy of the body of Christ to talk about the church a couple of chapters later he comes to the famous we come to the famous passage about the body being made up not of one part but of many and that each part is a body of is is each is part of the body of Christ But Here In this passage I just read he uses the fact that we share the one cup and eat from from the one loaf of bread as a reason to appeal to a few of the strin Corinthians to avoid the foolishness of idolatry he writes a little later in the letter if one part of the body suffers every part suffers with it he’s highlighting the act of sharing the communion meal eating from the same loaf drinking from the same cup as drawing us together into the body of Christ and we’ve spoken about this many times before here at St Luke’s the importance of our fellowship the importance of our inclusivity of our love and yes our generosity and concern one another when one of us suffers we all diminished and when one of us celebrates as we did a few minutes ago we can all celebrate we can all be boyed up and it extends Beyond The church here just repeat what one one person said to me Holy Communion offers connection with other people of Faith across the world and back through time to Jesus himself so Holy Communion is an act of Fellowship a building up of the body of Christ Alex showed these pictures last week they were taken at the Abbey on Easter Monday a few weeks ago when people from all over hartfordshire and bedfordshire joined together in joyful celebration joyful Holy Communion there were hundreds of people there were dozens of congregations representative represented there was one body of Christ as Alex pointed out this is a foraste of what is to come the body of Christ gathered together when all tears will be wiped away and death will be defeated what more joyous thought than can there be than that and I think it’s amply demonstrated in the the picture of Bishop Jane there celebrating communion I’ve never seen her look happier just sometimes when we go to communion we go very solemnly and indeed it is a solemn occasion but we can also smile we can also smile it’s a joyful celebration of what Jesus did for each one of us so communion is a gift from God a time to meet with Jesus Through the Holy Spirit a time to joyfully share in the body of Christ it is all those things and lastly it’s also a time as several of you said to remember to reflect on what Jesus did for each one of us we talk about this all the time we seert this truth frequently it’s the fundamental building block of our faith so remarkable so awesome so overwhelming that we have a God who today knows and loves each one of us a God who 2,000 years ago became a man and because he was a man he knew none of us and yet he laid down his life then for each one of us now he had misgivings he was a person he was a man a human being but for our sake he allowed himself to be betrayed humiliated and killed in the most excruciating way on a cross crucified for us his body broken for us his blood shed for us amen thank you Chris I’m sure most of us if not each one of us has someone in our lives in our hearts who we really wish would come and take a seat at that table someone who who we long to share that experience with to have that shared communion with Christ with for just a moment I just want you to take that person and put them in your hands in your heart in your mind and just hold them out to God and just ask for him to touch that person to show that person that there is a seat for them that there is a way for them Lord we bring these names that we’re all thinking we bring them to you these are people who we pray will come and hear hear your words of invitation who will join our shared experience who will eat at your table and taste and see that it is indeed good this table does not belong to any denomination any church or Community it belongs to Jesus it was at this table that he met his people he heard their stories and he shared his it was at this table that he deepened his friendship with poor folks and prostitutes and tax collectors with business class and puzzled bystanders it was at this table that he shared his most profound insights into who he God is and what he God wants and it was at this table with bread and wine that he initiated this Sacrament that we celebrate and we share so we give thanks that while we are able to come to this table and we try to leave behind any baggage or arrogance or unworthiness that we might feel we live in hope that these names these loved ones who sit on our hearts these loved ones who we extend to you Lord we pray that they will stop thinking this is not for me but instead they will think of Jesus saying I am for you and just accept his invitation to be the friend he cherishes and he longs to feed stay seated Tommy and Isabelle are gonna play a song for us sing along but don’t feel like don’t don’t stand just sit and think of Chris’s words and that person on your heart [Music] streng to rise we wait upon the Lord we will wait upon the Lord we will wait upon the Lord strength will rise as that at times it can feel feel hard to give thanks and praise when we feel like we are undeserving or unworthy especially when we live in a nation rich in so many ways especially when there are places in the world that are torn by violence and suffering the war in Gaza the war in Ukraine and many other places mean that life for many is about simply surviving and in many places Christians must still celebrate in secret and face prison and interrogation if they’re found out we pray for all those who want to worship but life for them is just about survival Lord be their great comforter be their great protector remind those who are in places of power those leaders and rulers that despite the differences we all share The Human Experience we all feel pain we all know suffering we all bleed and we all weep tears Our God you are our strong deliverer you are the Everlasting God Lord of Justice mercy and peace we pray for all those who have been newly elected or reelected into positions of
