IAS Visiting Fellow Professor Danilo Rothberg delivers a seminar on their research –
This talk is based on research conducted as part of the research project “Pandemic Communication in Times of Populism” (PANCOPOP), led by Professor Sabina Mihelj and funded by research funding bodies from Brazil, Poland, the UK and USA under the Trans-Atlantic Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities. The PANCOPOP project develops a comparative study of health crisis communication in the context of populist politics, bringing significant advances in knowledge at the intersection of political communication and public health. It examines the impact of populism on four aspects of the pandemic communication circuit during COVID-19: government-led health crisis communication, media policy, media coverage, and public attitudes. The focus is on four countries led by populist leaders during the pandemic: Brazil, Poland, Serbia, and the USA.
Professor Rothberg leads one of the strands of PANCOPOP project, which examines the key traits of media coverage of the pandemic, looking into the most emblematic news frames of that time in the four countries.
His talk will discuss preliminary results of this strand and delve into five generic frames that emerged from a qualitative analysis of more than two thousand news stories, comprising fourteen issue-specific frames that intertwine in surprising combinations.
