Ebikers are WRONG about the Ebike Speed Law

Ebikes are subject to some weird laws in the UK – the power limit of 250w and the throttle limit of 6kph. But the speed assistance limit isn’t one of them. I’m not the biggest fan of it but I do understand it. Many (not all) ebikers are wrong when it comes to this electric bike law and here’s why…

  1. Peterborough has a good cycleway system shared with pedestrians, pedestrians with dogs, children and cyclists. Perhaps they should be split into different types and make them require third party insurance etc like a moped? I'd just like to see prevention of deaths and injury what ever rules are made. Good video though.

  2. Was out on the road bike going uphill. Guy passes me like lance Armstrong on epo on an Mtb doing more than 20mph. He was riding an illegal ebike. Fucking cheat😂see loads of illegal fannies about which unfortunately ruins it for legal ebike users because the legal ones get lumped in with the illegals.

  3. My wife on her road bike rides consistently at around 17mph. My e-bike cannot do this speed, and I cannot therefore, keep up with her pedalling. I believe the 15 would be better replaced with 20. Any faster could be bad for the health in a collision.

  4. I will never purchase an ebike , unless max W 750 , Speed 30mph & throttle is allowed.
I would agree over 30mph needs a license… Oh one last point and prices are never over £1000.
ebikes are pure rip offs and better with a moped / motor bike.

  5. The difference with cars, motorbikes is that they are designed to reach their max speed, regardless of the road speed limit in force. Bicycles and Ev assisted two wheelers are designed for much much lower speeds, with handling and brakes to match….
Find the biggest hill and go as fast down it you can, on a bicycle, then attempt to stop as quick as you can…..safely.
If your wanting more speed on the roads, get a moped….
Next up ALL road users will be paying per mile, all because of the latest craze of EVs, the government will get all that tax back from somewhere that it’s lost in fuel duty…..

  6. It would be nice to have a 2 classification system:
Category 1- 15.5mph 250w nominal (as existing) no license required
Category 2- 25mph 750w nominal for existing driving licence holders
There is clear legislation (existing) about this- you can ride a bike (ebike or moped) that will do 20-30mph if it is registered, taxed and you have the correct license. There has to be a lower motorised class distinction (the current 15.5mph) so that there is an option to for those that don’t want to gain a license and registration/insurance costs. I have a 250w legal ebike, a 1,450w 58v custom which has a road legal mode to get me to the off-road riding and a 80kw motorcycle for longer faster riding. My 250w ebike is great for getting in and out of town and is efficient enough to be pedalled at double the cut off motor speed.
As a side note there aren’t any actual 250w e-bikes, that is the nominal continuous output at the 15.5mph cut of when not under any load- most 36v 250w e-bikes have a maximum power output of 630(ish)w- that’s 42v at 100% battery x 15amps output.

  7. I dont think you are wrong at all. If a cbt has to be taken for a moped that can do 30/40mph, then if an ebike is ridden over a certain classification, mainly the speed it can do, then it should also apply to ebikes and they should also have a vin and number plate. Insurance maybe. Also, as it would have pedals as well, perhaps a gearing system which works for the whole speed range of the e-moped vehicle so that you can contribute to the higher speeds as well. I have sent a link to something quite interesting: https://youtu.be/pkQBXsR97BE?si=EC1EnA9518D-EbGf

  8. Very good point as a have driver that has had my licence. Taken from me because of a seizure and great full for my e bike. If you mention cbt idea I would be except. As need bare minimum profin

  9. Good video! You talked about speed of cars being able to exceed speed limits, so can motorcycles. These bikes are great! You're getting cleaner air, people are exercising. Just be responsible, I want to be left alone and enjoy the bike with my driving experience. Thank you!!

  10. Complete deristriction of ebikes for anyone with a full motorcycle license, like me who's been riding motorbikes since the mid 1970s & have ridden in excess of 200mph
For anyone without a full bike license keep ebikes restricted without training, up the speed to about 30mph with CBT training & no limit for having a full bike license
Make the CBT course & test fairly difficult with a similar criteria as motorcycle training with parts 1, 2 & 3, highway code, training centre & road riding evaluation

  11. 28mph is a must. It's ridiculous for a motor to not be allowed to even go as fast as you can manually pedal! Europe sucks when it comes to ebikes.

  12. IMHO:
    Without a license: 15.5mph
    With a CBT: 25mph
With a full license and no limit-select: 35mph
    With a full license and limit-select: 35mph limit mode 70mph unlimited-mode.
All should have a 10mph "Pedestrian mode" with green flashing rear lights.

  13. A throttle is actually legal up to 15.5 mph, if it only works when your turning the pedals. On mine, you don't have to apply any force to them as just windmilling them around is good enough. Re cable operated disk brakes, the limiting factor is normally the grip between the tyre and the road. I can't see the minor increase in speed needing upgraded brakes.

Re speed limit I would prefer 20 mph, which would make it easier to keep up with non-assisted bikes (at the moment I tend to go faster uphill, slower on the level bits).

  14. Why has nobody mentioned the Pedibal E-Cruiza Throttle DVSA certified Ebike.

The first ebike to apparently be certified for use with a throttle.

  15. I am an older Veteran with my legs destroyed in service from hilly Norway. I need a throttle to pedal out of. a crossroad. That make me a Criminal when i exercise on my home build e-bike. 30 km.t (18.4m) must be Ok for an e-bike.

  16. I have been a cyclist and a motorist for years and going along a flat road at 15mph on a pedal bike is a good speed during my hay day 20mph on a flat for a long distance and 50mph downhill on a standard racing bike was tops and up hills down to 5 to 10 mph going downhill and I got fit!!!!!! E-Bikes are assisted, if you want faster then get an electric motorbike and pass a motorbike test and pass all of the theory tests to keep yourselves and everyone else safe. Food delivery drivers are the worst with upgraded bikes (probably illegal upgrades (definitely) travel at very high speeds, throttlers, and no pedalling) travelling the wrong way down roads and riding in busy city centres (Birmingham) etc.

  17. I think the current laws are about right. My wife just bought a Gazelle Avignon, which is a heavy bike, and I wouldn't like to be hit by it at all, let alone at over 15mph. For younger/fitter cyclists who want to go faster, a light e-bike will allow this.
We really don't want to allow excuses for people to start requiring testing/insurance/licensing etc.
Incidentally, bikes don't have to obey the speed limits for cars – although they do have to be ridden with due care for other road users.

  18. A bit late to the party on this one, but not sure I accept the argument when it comes to cars overtaking bicycles. There are 2 sides to this coin. How frustrating would it be to get stuck behind an extremely slow cyclist and unable to overtake. In a situation like that the urge would be even greater because, as a driver you are been held back even more than if the cyclist were travelling at a relatively decent speed.
Also, your vehicles ability to accelerate from a very slow speed up to a sufficient speed that would allow you to get past the slow cyclist would actually take longer than if you were accelerating from say 20mph where your vehicle already has a reasonable amount of momentum.
The biggest energy requirement for anything is when it is accelerating from standstill. So, the nearer to 0mph you are the more effort is required from the engine in order to accelerate up to the speed required in order to overtake sufficiently making it much more of a risk, in my view.

  19. 20 mph is more reasonable on a road than 15, but on a shared cycle path it should be dropped to 10 mph (not that people would obey, but its safer for pedestrians)
The argument about riding on pavements is a moot point because its illegal whatever speed.
I would take a law change for increased power over speed though – why does the government legislate what power gets you to 15mph??? The extra power is required for going up hills, or riding into the wind and would encourage more old people to give up their cars for bikes

  20. I like my 250W bike which is unrestricted, so doesn't cut off at 15.5mph. If it did I would be doing 95% of the journey with no assistance, because I'm not going to want to cruise at only 15.5mph on any bike. The assistance at higher speeds is far less noticable than at lower speeds anyway, and is really just taking the edge off it, and making me want to get out and cycle more

  21. I've done a bit over 4k on an ebike and to be honest the speed assist limit doesn't bother me considering you can use them anywhere a normal bike is allowed
