Spent about 10 minutes checking out the new layout for this junction.

The changes clearly have not substantially alleviated the congestion, meaning rat-running on the side road is as prevalent as ever, but the changes have also re-introduced the two major cycling safety issues with the two lane format:

a) Straight-ahead traffic encroaching into the cycle lane to squeeze past the right-turning queue

b) Cycle movements required to turn right onto Church Cowley Road, i.e. you have to position yourself between the right-turning queue and the straight ahead traffic flow (which squeezes both yourself and any straight-ahead cycle traffic)

Is this revised junction treatment conducive to a supervised 8 year old cycling to school? Obviously not. Has the overall road hostility increased? Undoubtedly. Is this a step backwards for Active Travel in Oxford? Clearly.
