I’m currently riding a 1980s Peugeot commuter bike and while it’s great, I want to treat myself to a bike that I can really connect with rather than just for utility. I’m willing to pay for the right bike but then worry it could get stolen. I keep my bike indoors at my apartment but I would still lock it on the street for a few hours during the day (never overnight). I’m looking for a reliable commuter bike to zip around NYC with a small frame (I’m 28F, 5’1″, 26” inseam) that makes me happy to ride, aesthetically.

I like the more upright position. Affordable, but I don’t love the colors and repainting options seem limited and expensive. I could grow to love it, but I hesitate to buy something I don’t totally love already.

This is on here strictly because I am in love with how it looks in the lilac color and I’m delighted every time I see it. However, it seems more advanced than what my basic needs warrant. I’m also concerned this price point would make it more likely to be stolen.
What are your thoughts? All of these ride so much more smoothly than my current, so what are some nuances I should keep an eye out for when I test ride again? Is it insane to get a $1,000+ bike at all in the city? I’m open to other suggestions to try out too. Thank you!!
