I live in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, I currently have a Giant Talon 1, I’ve never ridden a fat bike and don’t really have a budget or space for owning multiple bikes – we don’t have any groomed MTB trails at all, just old walking and ATV trails, the ones near me no one even bikes on them, just dirt bikes or quads.
I am also getting older and trying not to get fatter, so my thought is that a Fatbike would get me out more in the winter. I also live next to a beach and think it would be fun to Bike around on it, which gets me to my first question. The sand disappears and the beach becomes very rocky at several points: https://i.imgur.com/Djj5lJ9.jpeg so I guess my first question is can a fat bike go over rocks like that on the left if the tide was in? I tried it once on my hardtail and instantly faceplanted lol.
Second question is there are absolutely zero groomed MTB trails anywhere near me, let alone groomed winter trails, and our snow is quite wet and sloppy, it’s always changing from snow to rain and freezing rain, and it’s that snow that when you shovel it is like 10 times heavier. I am worried that all the winter riding I see is mostly on groomed trail systems and the bike won’t be of much use if I try to go down some random path or trail like [this](https://fundycontemplations.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/img_4526.jpg?w=1568) except imagine I am the first person to go thru since the snow has fallen (I am in a pretty remote and rural area). Is it even possible if there is like 6 to 12 inches of snow?
A few times a year I might do the 2 hour drive and go to an actual trail system, and I don’t really have much issue with doing that on a fatbike vs a hardtail, I am just a total amateur at that stuff out for slow fun. And I imagine a fat bike will be just fine for cruising along dirt/gravel walking trails? Maybe a bit rougher…
Anyway what are your thoughts?
