All right welcome to cycling Academy which I buy 3 2 1 go on this episode I am going to answer a very hot question which is what is the good power output if you are super beginner or quite advanced amateur cyclists and it just got power meter all you’ve got the turbo
Trainer with which estimate your power data you would like to tell are you good enough for the local creeks or MTB race or triathlon just by looking at the numbers and so I’m going to do it in a couple of minutes right now for the beginners I’m willing to strap you with
The transmitter so that you can see my heart break which is 103 feet per minute right now super recovery level and the power which is 131 that means how much work I am doing right now so what is the good power output I’m gonna go with with you through different training zones and
Then I’m going to tell you what power you should be able to sustain in order to do well in cat5 cut for cut 3 on some quiz or MTB races and let me also be a pro rider alright so what I’m doing right now is just the first zone both my
Heart rate and my power zone I will tell you at the end also how are we going to estimate your level of intensity if you don’t have a power meter and you want to train with me or the next session so stay stay with me for that I’m just
Going to change the here and go bit higher this is let’s say up to 180 on my level this is like recovery right or recovering between the intervals let’s go to the second zone and that would be here and just to make a long story short
What you see digit 2 as the first one on your power data often that means you will do well in cat5 or some beginners rate you have to think comfortable over 200 watts not for a minute or two but for an hour and more so that’s it
As you can hear my breathing becomes deeper but I can go for hours with this number 200 now I’m going to go with you bit higher and that would be my last FTP test when I did 271 what for 20 minutes so my FTP functional pressure power is 2
To the 555 it says the gear this way for the power to stabilize okay that would be my maximum power I can sustain for 20 minutes and it will take 95% of that and go to around 255 I should be able to go for an hour and
That’s the power output which will allow me in : in the races with 600 800 riders to be in the first hundred in the open category so so all each category first hundred my category I’m 37 years old this year that would be maybe 30 something around 30 okay now super
Exciting question how much power you should be able to sustain to be really good and that’s quite easy if you can see over 300 watts wide open okay so that will be here I’ve been listening to polka with Jeff kabushiki today and he said a rough
Number if you want to be really good he’s a champion multiple times of Canada you should be able to sustain around 300 Watts so all right so if you feel comfortable here very good for myself if I feel comfortable as to mystify that’s pretty average not bad at all
All right and of course Friday we’ll be able to say 100 watts at 500 watt per minute which is a lot all right let’s change the resistance and gonna sum up some of the things I said cool as you can see the power went down to under 100 squat it’s like
Nothing but my heart rate is still up so my heart is still in zone force where power zone 1 and my heart still working hard to clean those muscles to provide oxygen a fresh block to this tired tired muscle and as I’m recovering right now
It will go down back to to wear a static all right so being able to sustain 270 watts for an hour I would say go for all the rest if you can but especially especially in these road races that criteria there is another topic lets you shoot really it go get
Deep into and that’s the breakaway because I can sustain 260 for a long time but if some other guy would have the FTP just around my city but they will be able to sustain 400 watts for one and a half minutes and I won’t I get dropped analog array it’s
Different with the MTV or cross-country races where you can be dropped get dropped on the uphill you need power for that strength of your muscle tone your muscles core whole body actually but my pain it’s easier to get dropped on the road than on the on the terrain on the
Mtv by so beginners try to feel comfortable over 200 watts and go upward of course if you are really racing oriented try to go access to 300 watts as you can and then I would say get a coach we get a coach I’m sitting right
Now at 255 for my FTP so I can sustain 270 for 20 minutes and I would love to go close to 300 of my xep this year which is a lot a lot of a difference but since I’m just coming back to racing we always kiss high numbers at the
Beginning and then the increase in our wattage will be smaller and smaller and smaller and the pro cyclist ladies you know fight for 1 2 3 5 walk so that’s it for what is the good power output let us know in the comment section what is your
STP for how many years have you been training or erasing are you road cyclists are you MTV cyclists so that we all know how are you doing and then for those who will be training with me on my training sessions you don’t need power output the speed is something that
That’s the basics on the turbo trainer and here’s by having your speed and how you feel you will be able to go quite far with your training so stay tuned for that thanks so much watching be a guy

Very cool to see! So I'm 1m69 for 69.8kg and 46yo men. I have a power Meter since November 2021. I did a ftp test ( the 5min test ) in April 28 on my home trainer ( Feedback sport ). The result whas avg of 237w for 5 min so my FTP is 201.45w. I will do my next FPT test in Octobre 28 in the same condition to see after 6 month if i'am better! Since my first FTP test i have 1100km done.
My ftp is 195 watts and I’ve been training for about a year. I’m only 58kg and when I started my ftp was 113 watts
Its good to see myself getting quicker all the time and I’m only 17 this video was useful
I feel comfortable going down hill. Came here after a search for how many watts a cyclist can put out. This video is amazing in explaining power levels
Lol! All the bullshitters on here are hilarious!
Thanks for the lesson
Your HR Max is 180?
Some people only thing about power in this chat, obviously weight has a massive role to play, pros are athletes and diet is a huge part.. some novices have similar power outputs to some pros, but weigh a lot more..
Hello Community,
I come from a soccer, running, and swim background and I have no idea what all these materials are except for the heart rate monitor.
Does anyone have a video suggestion that dives deeper on how to use that machine that he is riding on?
Aspiring to finish an Ironman.
I can go with over 900 watts for one hour or so. That's my battery's capacity btw :)))
Really interesting. I've been riding for about 30 years. Never raced except for a few triathlons. Some long rides/weeks. My most was 524miles in a week 20+ years ago. I just got a power meter enabled trainer and I'm trying to understand a little bit more where I am starting from. I can find things on people who race, but that hasn't been me and won't be me. Of course then it doesn't matter that much as I just have to be good enough to enjoy my ride and get home, but we are all a bit competitive…just look at all the arguments about FTP in the comments. 211 which is about 2.8w/kg is where I am starting from for my first FTP test(20 min). 45 year old guy (who uses his wife's Youtube account). As I spend the winter training for power, it will be interesting to see what will happen when I get back outside in the spring.
35 years old, started riding 2.5 years ago and now at 3.3w/kg (i'm 70kg so thats 231w). I'm happy but gonna keep grinding to get BETTER!!!!
This is great content thanks man
Just starting now on an indoor stationary bike that mimics a trainer – meaning it gives watts, cadence and simulates gears. I'm not even trying to race – I just want to find a good Zone 2 power band @ 85-90 rpm to establish a base. And thus far it seems to be about 85-100 watts (BTW – I'm 49 years old and also an experienced runner, but not cyclist – I have about 1 hour on 4 days/week to train). Any ideas about how to gradually build a base over say 12 weeks, before getting into building a competitive FTP? Thanks.
Average Rob brought me here…
So I use Spin class ..If I’m using a higher resistance at the same RPM does my Wattage increase?
Thanks
The information in this channel is so well delivered. I always learn a lot and follow your channel
My ftp is175 ,,,,I’m 55 yrs ,,,been doing watt bike for 6 months ,,,any idea where I can get ftp to
my average watt as seen on strava is around 145 – 160, i.e., 2.5 to 3watt per kg.
is it good? I started long rides less than 1 month ago, i.e., 1.5 to 2hr rides.
I’ve been riding my echelon bike for about 5 months, I’m 145 lbs and can now sustain 243 watts for 1 hour and, and a 20 min FTP of 265. Not sure if this is good or not
I did 420watt average on a 1hour30min race. So i guess im a pro 🙂
did you ever reach your goal of 300 ftp?
I started cycling on and off last summer but almost nothing (and no background in sports or working out whatsoever) 34yrs old guy, 75kg 181cm. After maybe a month dedicated training this spring I did a lactate and VO2max test which showed my LT @ 115w/125bpm and AT (FTP) @ 165w/165bpm. Max pulse 201bpm. VO2 3368ml/min = 44,9 VO2Max and I had to stop the test at 240w because my legs had no power left. At that point my lactate level was 9,3mmol/l. The test was performed 2023-03-20 and I´ve now cycled according to a dedicated schedule with about 3 rest days a week. I just came back from what was supposed to be my first real HIIT session and it didnt go as planned, but anyway during the ride my 20min max power was 206W, and I feel a good improvement since the test. In 2 months I´ll do a follow-up test same as the first one, if I remember I can comment below this about my results after 4 months training.
Fell in love with cycling, finding the sport I can do very well. In 8 months of polarized training 6 days a week I'm currently at 4.6watt/kg with a goal of 5.5. Coming from a rock scrambling and casual MTB background. I expect to reach that in 16-24 months. Eat, live, breath, and rest cycling. Maybe an altitude tent is next! I want to crush e-bikes!
You absolutely have to look up a video to assemble it, but otherwise perfectly good.
I can do 370watts for 40 seconds 😂 63 rpm
this guy is insane, 200 w and only 127 HR bpm
what do you think your going to the olympics? Just ride for the pure enjoyment of it. Dont worry about ftp or wattage. Ridiculous. forget about all this other garbage.
400 watts for 1 min? Lance Armstrong averaged 500 watts for 35 minutes in 1999 Tour France. Average. Texas will secede from broken US. We are different
I am 61 and have been cycling for some years. Weight is 98 kg, and my 20 min FTP is 342W which is 3,5W/kg. Should I go for Gran Fondo?
