Many Nazis were sentenced to punishments ranging from imprisonment to death by hanging. A few elected officials orchestrated daring escapes from death sentences.
Among those who escaped was Adolf Eichmann, an architect of the Holocaust. After orchestrating the systematic murder of millions, Eichmann fled to South America.
Another escapee, Josef Mengele, infamously known as the “Angel of Death” for his sadistic experiments, found refuge in South America. Despite being a wanted war criminal, Mengele lived in Argentina and Paraguay before dying in 1979.
