My name’s Nicola and I’m the Team Leader for Transport Planning Services. My name’s Joe and I’m a Transport Planner here at Hampshire County Council. I think it’s quite difficult to ask “what’s a day in the life of a transport planner?” Because it can be really varied.

You could be working at home, you could be working in our offices in Winchester, or you could be out on the streets talking to residents or elected members or at events. Not every scheme is the same, you’re doing different things on different schemes and having the opportunity to work with different people,

Both internally and externally across the organisation. Particular projects that the team is working on at the moment are local cycling and walking infrastructure plans, these are huge plans that talk about the development of infrastructure for walking and cycling over the next ten year period, really

Uplifting the kind of infrastructure so that more people would want to walk and cycle. I’m also involved in transport assessments, so that’s where you’ve got a project that wants to go forward, in this case, it’s a local plan for one of the boroughs

And we need to look at the impacts of where they want to put housing and business and all of this kind of thing, on the transport networks. So, how will that affect congestion? How will it affect health? How will it affect carbon? All of these different kinds of things

And you really have to go into a lot of detail and data to do that. The most enjoyable bit is probably just working with everyone and meeting so many people and piecing together what everyone does and how the organisation works and and finding my place in that.

I got here about eight years ago and Hampshire put me through my master’s degree, so I’ve now got a master’s degree in transport planning and management with University of Westminster. And we also do master’s degrees, fully funded with Southampton. Yeah, so now I’m a fully fledged

Chartered transport planner, and Hampshire has helped me to get to that point. I think the most enjoyable part of the role is how collaborative it is. So we don’t just sit in a little office by ourselves, you will be talking to lots of different people across the course of your day

On different projects. Don’t feel nervous of applying and coming to join us, you will be well looked after and well helped all the way through the process. Even in the interview process they were lovely and friendly and it can be awkward at an interview but it was nice

Having a couple of friendly faces greet you through and answer any questions. so yeah, don’t feel shy, It’s a lovely group of people who will be helpful right from the moment you apply.
