Tonight we have our own Kev Cummings leading praise and worship. Mark and Sue attempting to organise us, and the word of God brought to us by Dan Harris from Longriders CMC.
Welcome to biker J yay well good evening and welcome to uh St Martin’s Methodist Church here in Warrington it’s good to see so many of you here and those of who joining us online uh the tech is working thanks to Rob and Alec yay so anything could

Oh we’re going to do Kathy great Kathy come on down as Kathy commences our worship for us thank you k hi yeah welcome yes and welcome so sue asked me um sorry to bring a prayer and a scripture for you but me being me of
Course I’m going to do it the other way around so I’m going to bring you a scripture and then a prayer if that’s okay so the scripture I’ve chosen is from first Peter um chapter 2 and verse 24 and he himself bore our our sins in
His body on the cross so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness for by his wounds you were healed and I’m going to tell you say a little bit about it but I’m going to tell it you in the words of Carl Bart because uh I was reading an alist
McGrath book I love Alistar McGrath wouldn’t have got through my theology degree without him Hallelujah but KL Bart puts it like this look once again to Jesus Christ in his death upon the cross look and try to understand what he did and suffered for you for me for us All he carried our sin our captivity and our suffering and did not carry it in vain he carried it away he acted as the captain of us all he broke through the ranks of our enemies he has already won the battle our battle all we have to do is follow him
Him to be victorious with him through him in him we are saved our sin no longer has any power over us our prison door is open when he the Son of God sets us free we are truly free now I’d like to pray all powerful Creator God we give thanks that nothing is
Impossible with you we thank you for the work that you have done in our lives and the work that you continue to do in the lives of those who do not yet know you as we do we thank you for the price that you have paid PA for our transformation both here on
Earth and for and throughout eternity Lord we pray that we live a life compelled by the vision of you we thank you that we can leave the past behind and live in New Found freedom to serve you help us by words and deeds to bring your lifechanging power and hope
Wherever it is that you call us to serve equip and enable us to be Bringers of your transformative word and Witnesses of your transformative power we lift before you now particular people places and situations that we know of that need your transformative restorative or Healing Touch direct our hearts and words and
Actions as we Minister your light in the darkness by prayer or action or deed in Jesus transforming name we pray amen am thank you for that Kathy and and we do indeed look for God’s transformational power to be at work through our worship this evening worship is going to be led
By who who’s leading worship tonight Su Kev kev’s leading kev’s leading worship tonight thanks to Kev is a Le’s worship and then God’s word is going to be shared by a young chat called Dan Dan wow we did rehearse this didn’t we oh no we’re doing well was this to
Make up for last month so look forward to them leading us K leading worship and for bring us God’s word we’ve got various other things happening there is some bikers gear out in the hall uh either donations to benevolent fund or just take it if you need some bikers
Gear take it if you need it or donations by benevolent fund C stuff want to share there’s a regional day have we got a poster for that I’ll have to stand on tiptoes go okay there’s a there’s a regional CMA day coming up on the 16th
Of March um and uh I’m I’m part of the um Northwest Regional chairs group um so I would uh say if you want to come along to that come and see me after and we’ll see about how that can be done and if it can be
Done and all CMA members of course would be lovely to see you there okay and don’t forget that as well we have the benevolent teddy bears thanks to those who provide them and those who make them look so wonderful again the benevolent teddy bears at support Fallen bikers if you’ve
Heard of someone who’s in need or in support talk to one of the leadership team uh and we’ll do our best to help people in their time of need what else do we need to say bless there’s a Rob I’d like to invite you up I don’t want to take your thunder
Okay so we’re gonna have Rob up that’s fantastic Rob Rob’s half the man he was yeah you think I’m joking he’s got a very noisy bike now thank you can you hear me all right the back yes good stuff just a couple of things I’m
Pushing um first of all there is the the podcast podcast is called this way up you can find it on Apple music Google Spotify and Amazon now if you go on any of those podcast platforms and type in this way up it’s the one with the motorcycle on
And it’s really cool it’s um it’s it’s basically chat between our own brother Andrew and um Mal Mok the uh our very own Vicor it’s entertaining but there’s always a big punch of the Gospel what I’d like you to do is to listen to it and then share it with all your Chumps
Because we want this to get out there we’ve invested quite a bit of money on the equipment for it and we’ll be continuing to do so um and we’d really like that to make that grow bigger and the second thing I’m pushing is our biker blessing this is happening on the
23rd of March so two locations we’re starting at St John’s Abby Holton in Stoke uh kicking off at 9:00 with a free breakfast um there will be at some time after that and the times here get a bit loose but sometime around about halfast 10 there’ll be a formal I say formal
It’s a very informal service where we will just bless the bikes and the riders for this season and uh that’ll consist of a a very short uh preach from Mal and uh maybe a short time of Praise I don’t know and then we’ll be be taking off for
A ride from Abby Holton to priest Heath um at the Midway um Cafe where we’ll be having breu Etc from about 12 and then the service will be repeated there from 12:30 um so if you can get to one or both of those it’d be fantastic some of
You live in the wrong side of the Mery we know that uh if you want to come to just one of those that’ be brilliant if you want to come to John’s for the ride we’d love to see you there as well those of you who live in filey Mr hudon it’ be
Lovely to see you there as well God bless you thank you thanks Rob Kev would you come and lead us in song and praise thank You you get a better intro than that it just start with a little testimony for me um why I do what I do why do I rock it like I rock it why I player like I do uh about 2010 there thereabouts I was at a
A rally and was in the beer tent I’d like to say I was in the beer tent witnessing but you can’t talk in the beer tent is too loud I was there listening to the bands and the the bands were playing and all the Rockers at
Their arms in their air and the praising the god of rock God of rock music and I said to I always with see men I was so by the way and I said to my mate I said we can’t reach these guys with music from the church we’re so far apart from
Them but if we could Rock a little bit maybe just maybe somebody would come in and listen to us we could reach out um so I have I’ve tried to do that for the last decade or longer uh I have my critics uh people who don’t like it and
Fair enough I can’t say much about that um but um that’s what we’re going to do tonight we’re going to rock uh and roll and make some noise if that’s that’s okay so do you want to stand and we’ll all pray oh stand as you’re able I think is
What you should say isn’t it my apologies here uh Heavenly Father we’re going to sing some songs tonight and what we’re going to ask father is that those songs become worship that our hearts are open to you and that you speak to us tonight that for us there may be words
And music but for you they are Glory it’s not like you need us Lord you have angels to sing to you but you tell us that as we praise and lift our arms to you then the blessings come down from above and it’s those blessings we’re asking for now

Go I I will read actually from from um the biker Bible which would be it’s the version of the Bible that we use at at biker church that um we are graciously supplied by Christian motorcyclist Association UK for but it’s um it’s a staple text and uh this is a reading that Dan
Has asked me to do from um The Book of Matthew um Matthew’s record of his time with Jesus and um although it’s got chapters and verses now it wasn’t written like that this is his story about when John the Baptist was in prison and Matthew writes here John was
In prison when he heard what Christ was doing so John sent some of his followers to ask Jesus are you the one we should be looking for or must we wait for someone else Jesus answered go and tell John what you have heard and seen the blind are now able to see and
The lame can walk people with Leprosy are being healed and the de can hear the dead are raised to life and the poor are hearing the good news God will bless everyone who doesn’t reject me because of what I do as John’s followers were going away Jesus spoke to the crowds about
John what sort of a person did you go out into the desert to see was he like Tall Grass blown about by the wind what kind of a man did you go out to see was he someone dressed in fine clothes people who dress like that live
In the king’s Palace or did you really go out to see was he a prophet he certainly was I tell you he was more than a prophet in the scripture God says about him I am sending my messenger ahead of you to get things ready for
You I tell you that no one else ever born on this Earth is greater than John the Baptist but whoever is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he thank you shall we pray Lord use your words but may the words from my mouth but so much more the the
Meditations of our hearts and our minds and our spirits being infused and guided and shaken up by your spirit amen amen so we have our slides up but don’t press play just yet and for those who don’t know me I’m sure some of
You do know me but my name is Dan I’m a minister with the United reform for church we’re one of those doy churches who might not be here in 20 years time but they you never know you never know may the Baptist and the are not
Far the kingom of God will be oh yes definitely church is I’m a prospect right with the l m Club I’ve been CNA for 20 OD years me snowy was saying Snow’s known me since 1938 was it 88 88 I was a young I was a young man just
Become a Christian gone to Green Belt heard John Smith from God Squad in those days and bumped into snowy met the CMA for the first time thought Co on to be like them Christians can be okay but then we all grew up didn’t we so shall we have our little video please
What what working me can we fix it or am I Stu thank You thank you The jeys of modern technology okay no can we move forward to the uh slides the Images It’s working it was worth waiting for thank you thank you next slide please right should be easier now it’s just images who are you at some point in our lives we have or we will be pondering this question that’s it that’s it keepi there thank
You the song Who Are You was written by Pete townend of the who apparently in 1971 while he was a spiritual Retreat the song has a spiritual longing Twisted somewhere in the lyrics who are you towns and asks this is the question that we have
Or we will be asking our of ourselves or of others we might catch sight of ourselves in the mirror one day wondering what has become of Our Lives or in a moment of Crisis reliable friends might let us down or like Town’s end we might be spiritually SE searching for a deeper
Purpose in life or something might happen which makes us question how reliable and who God is is so we all have or one day will ask that question of ourself others or God who are you this is the question that we find John the Baptist pondering while he’s languishing in
Prison he’s a spiritual Anarchist a rebel with a cause as you could say you could imagine him tearing around the desert on a motorbike but he was on foot of those days around the desert proclaiming the arrival of the kingdom of God who would shake a fist at The Establishment challenging power and
Going up to invading soldiers telling them to be happy with their pay he had shared his childhood with his cousin Jesus both of them sang from the same hym book in later life declaring the arrival of the kingdom of God inspired by the teaching of the prophet
Isaiah as you know John was a bsy kind of guy who would W up to a corrupt Soldier and tell them to be content with their pain and I’m repeating myself here so what had lent led to his crisis of Faith why was he doubting his purpose
And life and saying to his cousin who are you now John the Baptist he was the last in a long lineage of old school prophets who called the world to account his life pivoted between the ending of one era what we call the Old Testament it’s not old the Old Testament
Is still relevant I hate that phrase but that old time and mean emergence of the New World Order which would be brought in by Jesus in ways he hadn’t yet fathomed he didn’t yet know what the new world would look like or Jesus’s true role in it and most Changing Times
Probably contributed to his identity crisis what about us we living in Changing Times too to quote Bob Martin Bob Dylan The Times They are changing how are we coping prophets like John were known to go to lonely places seeking God’s presence whether it’s a cave like Ezekiel the Wilderness like Jesus and
John or Elijah or Elijah up a mountain I was get confused between the two so the prophets C us to go on a journey on a pilgrimage to forget our old selves and wecover ourselves in the light of the truth of God so what I want you to do is we’re
Going to forget about John for the moment languishing in his prison cell and we’ll come back to him in a while but I want to I want to invite you to come with me and heed the prophet’s call to go on a pilgrimage on a journey of
Discovery to find Jesus and find God in lonely places so entertain me please as you do with this thought experiment tonight as we go on a pilgrimage from the comfort of where you’re sitting climbing a mountain next slide please so let me introduce to you the mountain we’re going to climb Everest
Well not literally now some prophets they heard they headed to the hills and the mountains to hear God’s voice and you can’t get much bigger than Everest do we have anyone who done Everest right okay right okay good good good Everest is one of those what’s
Called an elite 8,000 of me uh mountains is over 8,000 MERS above sea level to climb it you have to hit a few base camps so base camps here Camp one Camp two camp three Camp four push up to the summit that can take many days and let me introduce to you
The death zone as I’m sure you know above 8,000 mters the air is so thin the climers body cells start to die and the Judgment can become impaired and up there without oxygen you’re going to die quick the famous Adventurer Bear Grills once climbed Everest at the tender age
Of 27 at the time setting a record for the youngest Brit to to make it to the summit and he says this in one of his books you only climb the mountain because the mountain allows it if it says wait then you must wait and when it allows you to go then
You must struggle and strain in the thin air with all of your might we approach mountains with humility if you’re not careful and you think you know what you doing you could it could become the better of you in the same way we approach pilgrimage with humility too next slide
Please so what we’re going to do is we’re going to go on a journey with the prophets but we’re going to do one of the heart and mind and we’re going to imagine our journey is going up a mountain of above 8,000 M so here’s a mountain of I’ve dreamed up a
Metaphorical Mountain we’re going to climb tonight which I call Mount Faith because some of your Journeys are so impressive I’ve not chosen a small Hill from the Lake District or something I’ve chosen this mountain in honor of the journeys that some of you have made
Because some of you have come a long way and you felt like you’ve pushed yourself up so high this is deserving of you we bear in mind this also has the death zone above 8,000 meters the air get so thin if we’re not careful we could
Die but the view from this peak is to die for however most people live below the clouds in their everyday lives they go out their lives blissfully unaware of the mountain hidden behind the clouds and the view from the summit which can change and transform their lives so let’s begin our journey leaving
Our everyday life behind as we park up our motorbike put on our walking boots oh they’re moaning I blame John huton it’s him who morning right right that’s I me just here right is that better okay right for those online a brief re a brief recap we’re
Going on a pilgrimage up a metaph focal Mountain to meet with god so let’s start our journey leaving our everyday lives behind as we go on a pilgrimage of Mount Faith next slide please to start our journey to Peak above the clouds we need to establish a foothold to help us on
Our way and this first Camp we’ll be using is simply called trust we need to place a little bit of trust in something to launch us off it could be anything it could be a smile of a friend who goes to church a catchy hymn we heard at a
Funeral or a conversation with a friend it doesn’t matter what we place our trust in initially because something Sparks our curiosity and it launches us off into the foothills of Mount Faith so for you in this church and for people at home for those who know the
Lord what sparked your journey on off what conversation what song what relationship launched you on the road to find Jesus Christ next Camp please next slide thank you so Camp two as we leave the foothills of Mount faith we come to our second camp and this is called curiosity spiritual
Curiosity curiosity is not Faith it’s just asking questions and exploring it could be questions about spirituality conspiracy theories facts about religion anything that kind of grabs our attention now for those of us who are accompanying others on Journeys the task is to prayerfully guide the conversations away from that sort of subject towards
Jesus I’m a minister of 11 churches and many of our congregants I think are ostic who have never connected to God or Jesus as a person this pilgrimage is a very personal Journey personal to us and heading towards a person who can change our lives so as we journey onwards and
Upwards slowly moving to the summit we Ponder what possibilities may be unlocked by our pilgrimage moving away from the clouds our mood might start to change and our curiosity starts to give way to a deeper questioning of the assumptions with held in life next slide please as we climb Mount Faith this
8,000 meter Mountain we start to notice the air is starting to get thin about halfway up our bodies haven’t yet ACC climatized to the altitude and so we pause to catch our breath Opening Our Ruck sacks to set up camp which we call openness we look down the foot path
Realizing how far we’ve traveled the clouds obscure the life we’ve left behind and then we turn to look to the summit clouds also obscure the summit and we realize we still have a long long way to go so we sit on a rock by our tent we realize that we’re changing because of
This journey of this pilgrimage surrounded by the mountains we kind of sing that song by The Who thinking philosophically even spiritually who am I we Ponder this stage of Journey now beginning to open up new possibilities can be triggered by any change in our lives it could be CH it could be sparked
By a birth by a death by a new job by buying a motorbike that you suddenly realize it’s a pile of crap or retiring or changing our health openness is regarded as a positive characteristic in today’s society and still should not be confused with conversion at this stage in the journey
We have made no commitments to anyone or anything our hearts still belong to ourselves and if we want to we can pack up our tent and head back down to the mountain off the mountain to the clouds and back to our normal lives we’d have some stories to tell but
Our journey would be incomplete the air is thinner up here and the weather is more extreme and from here the mountain side starts to get steeper so we ask ourselves do we continue or do we turn back we hover briefly in the valley of indecision and then decide to carry on
Upwards next slide please have to walk this thirsty work as we leave camp three behind we find our journey is becoming more and more treacherous we have to keep an eye out for hazards on the path and we are wary of a steep drop that falls to our
Left the weather is turning and we need to get out of the elements so we set up our final count which is called spiritual seeking snuggling up in our in our sleeping bags our minds begun to wonder we remember a friend once told us life is a journey not a
Destination I’m allowed to swear and we think borocks that sort of thinking will not sustain us in these conditions the Casual Journey which we could have left at any time has become a quest the Summit is becoming closer and it is only by sheer bloody mindedness and force of will which keeps us
Moving this stage of our journey leads to some serious questions who am I for those of you who remember the journey to faith if it was a slow one you might remember the struggles that you made the the wrestling with the idea of loss of autonomy if I got to give my
Life to this being I don’t see or understand what will I become we become deeply aware that the journey forward has real lifechanging implications on our lives it will affect our relationships our loved ones it could affect how we parent as our kids it could affect our
Careers our use of money or the way we look at life we pull the sleeping bag over our heads to get a good night’s sleep before the final push towards the summit next slide morning breaks the weather looks good and we pack up camp for the final
Assault it is from here the journey gets most treacherous ahead of us lies the death zone the point at which the air becomes too thin to sustain life we cannot underestimate the significance of the death zone Crossing into it is crossing the unknown how many of us have faced life-changing
Decisions because of our faith those walking it for the first time might be filled with Dread to cross that line we do not know what the summit what our destination might look like this journey is changing us and for some that might be terrifying we do not know what we might
Become if we keep going do we keep going or do we turn back holding our breath we cross into the death zone next slide we cross we step over the line exploring and asking is there a God who cares for me is there a god a being in the universe
Who can make sense of my wrecked life as our body drains the last molecules of that lung full of air we took a minute ago we panic and gasp to discover there is air up here you see my friends above the death zone apart a point where we might go go through personal
Crucifixion we discover an entire ecosystem that sustains life it’s beyond that line and it sustains life in ways we cannot even understand or comprehend we have stepped into the kingdom of God this unseen Kingdom is sustained by the spirit of God himself the Hebrew word for spirit is rash meaning breath or
Breeze or wind to be controversial is actually like a French word in some ways it’s a female words it’s a female noun implying that there’s almost like a feminine personality within the spirit which we forget about with all our male language we breathe in deep lungfuls of God’s lifegiving
Spirit and we stay for a while on the peak luxuriating in the grace of God and the sights that are to die but my friends we cannot stay forever ever on the summit and we hear a voice carried in the wind telling us to return to our lives below the
Clouds but as we Ascend we are aware that we’re not leaving that strange ecosystem the kingdom of God behind at the summit you see that’s a mystery of God we carry it with us as we descend back into our everyday lives next slide please and as we leave Mount Faith
Behind returning to our everyday lives we find that this was more than just a once in a lifetime thrill or holiday this is a continual journey of discipleship of following Jesus you see my friends it plays like a loop again and again through the different circumstances and seasons in
Our lives always challenging us to seek The Higher Ground to seek the kingdom of God and to breathe in the spirit of God which sustains us in our Earthly Walk With Jesus below the clouds in this world but sometimes my friends we hit the ground hard finding ourselves in a
Dark place even season pilgrims veterans such as John the Baptist can crash and burn and so we returned to our scripture we started with finding John languishing in prison sending out a message to Jesus saying who are you if you know John’s story you will know in some ways it doesn’t end
Well John condemned the local leaders illegal marriage and he was executed on the whims of said wife but in a surprise twist Jesus answers John’s question in several ways firstly Jesus affirms John in the most amazing way possible he says truly I tell you among all those born of women there has not
Been one risen anyone greater than John the Baptist John is the last and greatest of the long line of Old Testament prophets that is who John was through the humility of Walking With Jesus what sort of person would emerge at the end of your journey what might Jesus say about
Us what things could he say which we can’t even imagine or comprehend whilst we are living this Earthly life and secondly although John doesn’t live to witness it John’s question about Jesus’s identity is answered John isn’t just a human Messiah as John had previously thought he is the divine presence who
Brought the world into being and through his resurrection brought Humanity back to God making our pilgrimes possible Jesus my friends is the one he’s sitting at the top of the throne on the throne at the top of the mountain he is the one we seek it’s a hard journey because it
Means we’re going to have to cross some lines because he’s going to ask us to give things up things we have to put down but in the process we breathe in more of God’s life-giving spirit and we see him in new ways and in response he allows us to see
Ourselves in new ways working out who we are in light of God’s revelation so as I close let me say this we all face trials and hard times our choices def find the sort of person who will emerge at the end of that journey and in those trials
We can find Christ with us and at the end too we can become better people by choosing to find Christ in our situations rather than running away from them and as we emerge from the other side Crossing into the death zone of our own lives and then coming out at the other
Side we can be more at peace with God and at peace with ourselves so I finished with the words of another jailbird the Apostle Paul who while incarcerated wrote a letter to the Believers in a Roman city called Philippi and he said this forgetting what is behind me and
Striving for what is ahead I press on to the goal I press on to the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus so whatever your circumstances press on my friends seek the support you need but climb the mountain know the presence of Christ
With you breathe in the spirit of God who sustains you and through humility on the journey May we all truly know Christ as we are known by Christ [Applause] amen thank you Dan should we pray Come Holy Spirit Holy Spirit Alive within each one of us known or
