If you plan cycling in the Westfjords of Iceland, chances are you will need to head to Isafjordur at some point. On the road from Þingeyrii to Ísafjörðu you have two options – Go through a tunnel, or take a dirt track over the mountain.
(Read about the tunnel here: https://www.davestravelpages.com/cycling-vestfirdir-tunnel-iceland/)
Two hours of pushing my heavy bike up hill in the rain didn’t seem that appealing to me, so I chose the tunnel!

As far as cycling through tunnels in Iceland go this wasn’t too bad. There was a rather unusual junction halfway through, and also a one way system, but it was only 6kms in length. No problem!

Video taken on my 2023 bike tour around Iceland – More videos to follow!

Almost at the entrance of the tunnel and actually it looks like I might be because I’ve cycled up to the tunnel I might be going slightly downhill through it which is a bit of a result according to this sign our lane has priority our direction of travel which obviously means nothing

When you’re on a bicycle cuz nobody cares and there’s also going to be a junction by the looks of it so I’m going to be going to isaa and the junction is in what 4 km ah so although the the tunnel is 9 km I’m only going through 6 km of it

Which is a result okay here we go there’s no uh path by the looks of it which is a bit of a bus Ed and I’ve got my lights on and I’ve done everything I can do 6 km can see some bicycle tracks in the dirt next to me

So I’m obviously not the only maaka come through here on a bike and there is like some pull-offs that’s a bit worryingly dark okay I’m going to turn the camera off and concentrate so the ones coming from the front I can coope with one’s pulling coming from behind I’m hoping to hear

Them in time and then pull over it’s not very well lit this tunnel about 4 km down coming up to that weird Junction I just carry Straight on but I was going to the other place so I’d have to turn left here I think probably easily missed unless you’re listening to your GPS

Glad I have my seal skin socks on today some some wet bits here every time I pull over I seem to end up in a puddle as you can see it’s two lanes now but I’m pulling over anyway not super pleasant but the alternative with a fully loaded bike was even less Pleasant

I think especially with that low lying cloud the light at the end of the tunnel so as it turned out the first 4 km were the worst and then after that it wasn’t too bad
