On my 2019 Stumpjumper I was riding with the stock wheels. Previously I had broken the rear hub axle and then I did it again. The portion that holds the cassette is the specific spot where it shears. Supposedly this is a SRAM hub / design that many OEMs use.

I was on a riding trip so I sorted a new wheel entirely. However, I was intending to move the bike on. So there is some motivation to keep the old wheel and repair.

The wheel guy who I spoke to (who seemed to be an expert) reckons this design is prone to needing to be over-tightening. I also felt that to make it solidly tightened it was possibly applying too much stress. Anything less would result in play. Another mechanic said “good job” on breaking it, saying it is steel but it is definitely aluminum. The section which breaks I would say is a 2mm wall section too, so possibly not that strong as well.

Any similar stories? Again, the only intention is to “down build” the bike and pass it on as a complete bike (e.g. swap my suspension back to original etc.). But won’t bother fixing if it isn’t worth it. An axle is around $40-60, plus either new pawls or a hub (another $100).
