In this video I kick off 2018 in much the same way I ended 2017, mountain biking some of the best trails in Spain!
That is off course my most humble of opinions and there are other areas in Spain better known for their mountain biking, but the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range is pretty dope.
BKXC hasn’t ventured this far south on his adventures I don’t think, but he’s spent quite a bit of time in Basque Country up in Pyrenees, a place I definitely intend on mountain biking in 2018.
I was running an entirely new setup in this video and as a result of all the changes my audio got messed up. I covered it up well with some banging tunes while keeping some of the native sound of the bike rumbling over the terrain.
The new additions and setup changes in this video are the use of my £10 Mountain Warehouse hip pack, the first use of my RockShox Reverb 1x Remote and the first use of some POC gloves. I have to say they all performed really well!
My bike setup changes were to install a bottle cage for water, tape an inner tube to the down tube, mount my pump on the down tube and remount the Garmin GPS on the handlebars. All this to reduce what needed to go in the hip pack from my backpack.
Then I had to change my GoPro chesty and audio recording setup as I no longer had the straps of my Osprey Raptor backpack to help with mounting stuff and steadying the Karma Grip.
The result? Extremely comfortable riding, the hip bag is a dream and makes you feel so light and free to move, but my audio got screwed up in the process. Win/lose.
The ride itself was sweet. I got uplifted to around 6000ft and climbed another 500 – 600 for the first descent. A beautifully compacted pine wooded trails that opens out to a magnificent view of the valleys to the south.
A small climb took me to another descent across some seriously loose and gnarly terrain, before switching back through a long, pretty straight but fast as hell section through some more pine.
After a brief stop for some vlogging, I hit one of my favorites. Another rutted, loose, chunky but fast gnarly descent still heading south towards the villages of Pitres and Portugos.
Some boring tarmac (that I cut out of the edit) later and I bumped into some Spanish Ibex, the wild mountain goats of the region. The ones with the soft hooves and two toes that can stand on slanted damn walls, those crazy goats.
After that it was into the final steep descent with arm pump from hell that spat me out in Pampaneira. Then a short pedal home for a well deserved beer!

Hi, I am enjoying your videos a lot, as I am from south Spain. If you ever want to ride next to Malaga it will be my pleasure to accompany you. There are some nice singletracks in here. I am going to Lanjaron on spring and for sure I am riding some of your trails. Keep the good work! Thanks for your videos!
