Hoping that my post can invite some insight into what bike I should get next. Currently I own a mid range steel ATB bike fitted for bikepacking, since that is what I like to do. I put on suspension stem/seatpost, racks, and aero bars for traveling far.
I also commute everyday in NYC. The ATB is doing great for this purpose, although a road bike would definitely be faster for this purpose. However i recently was invited to the idea of a hardtail MTB with suspension forks for more challenging bikepacking.
My issue is that if I got a road bike I would use it for commuting which, going by miles alone is most of my riding. A road bike would be better for commuting than a hardtail.
I don’t have a car. So access to bikepacking routes that warrant a hardtail would be difficult. But I want to do those routes so bad.
But right now, my budget only allows for one more bike.

Hardtail: http://www.horsebrand.co/bikes/hell-cat-275 (Can be done with rigid or sus fork)
Any thoughts?
