Most people probably already invested in some bike lights for this winter, but for those looking for new lights next autumn, I want to share my experience.
I bought the Lupine Piko about three years ago and used it as a head light, without any additional light. It works fine, but I was always bother by the fact that the light has quite a strong spotlight and making it very sensitive towards proper angling. Either one can see everything right in front of the front tire or far in the distance.
To solve this issue, I got an Outbound Trail Evo for Christmas. I also considered the Magicshine Monteer 8000, but settled for the Outbound given its good reviews and all in one package.
Today I managed to do my first ride with both lights and have to say I am very happy with my purchase. The Outbound has a very even beam pattern which, combined with the more spot like pattern of the Lupine, works very well. Furthermore, both are about equally strong, which means neither creates shadows that can’t be overcome by the other. (Both are 2000-2500 Lumen)
I attached three photos that showcase what I tried to describe. The Outbound lights up the trail evenly while the Lupine makes sure roots don’t throw shadows and tracks my head movement.
If I could keep only one, I would probably keep the Lupine since a headlamp helps with drops etc. That said I would not necessarily but the Lupine as my only light again, due to its strong spotlight.
I hope this helps others understand the difference between beam patterns and their impact on the trail.
