The king doesn't need a driving license, just a big expensive escort, that WE pay for.
Has Timmy been a naughty boy?!
What a biased piece of verbal tossing this is, bitter motorists, stuck in traffic 😂 Didn't cover anything other than sensationalist motorised mouths.
Why don't the police police this, erm! Well these bike's they are referring to are currently required to have such…
Pedelecs or ebikes over a certain power are not exactly the arguement here, but the typical daft pandering to TVs inherently declining demographics…
Well done Timmy… Standing up to willfully uneducated beliefs broadcasting trying to find ways to hang onto their dying motorist viewer numbers… (I wonder if anyone can draw anything statistical on that!)
And yet ANOTHER discussion with very limited time budgeted for the parties invited to contribute! THIS IS MOST FRUSTRATING!!!!
Yes, and some severe penalties concocted for miscreants who menace the pedestrian by riding on the pavement. These lycra clad droogs need reining in before an elderly person comes to any harm.
Roads are payed for out of council taxes and other taxes , car tax hasnt been used for road up keep in decades , so all tax payers are paying for the roads
Scandinavian countries: “Let’s make smart changes to thé pedestrian Infrastructure to make roads work for the people”
The UK: TAX THEM, BAN THEM, LOCK THEM UP.
This country is a mess.
Instead of a licence plate for each bicycle. A registration number for the cyclist who must display it via a hi viz etc… At least they can be traced when they break the law.
Eh no way no how are they not gouging enough from the cars without trying to mug cyclists. It's the only form of transportation that's free other than shank's pony.
The nutter that tries to introduce this will not get voted in ever again 😂😂😂.
Could I point out, that man has blatantly gotten away with lying on daytime television. Ebikes that propel the user to more than 15.5mph are illegal, and anyone who rides a bike regularly can exceed that speed whether they have a motor or not.
There is already a law that states ebikes that go faster than 15.5mph need a licence plate. I know this because I've got one, with a licence plate and a V5C.
Just how we laugh at current American issues that only they care about, the rest of europe must do the same for this country. What we need to do is invest in pedestrian and cycle infistructure like other european citirs so that cycling is safe and insurance/plates arent nessassary. If the gov isnt trying to take more of our money, its seems to be ourselves that advocate for regulations to take the working mans wages. Why do we let idiots like this convince us to make desisions tnat are against our interests… Time and time again
It’s stupid. Only reason I ride a bike to work is to avoid all the costs involved in having a car. If they brought this in I may as well go back to driving.
Cyclists should have reg plates, a license, pay road tax, and should be held accountable when they cause an accident. They do not own the roads like they think they do and they should get off the damn pavement. WHY are cycle tracks on pavement so wide? They don’t need that much room and they don’t even stick to their side of the pavement.
It’s the British infrastructure in cities. Not built for cyclists. Look at ANY other European city. They ALL have cycle lanes. Britain is a disgrace. They are so up their own arse, they can’t see that all other countries have addressed this "problem" and dealt with it….YEARS ago! 🙄
Brits are slaves.
They should have numerous plate and insurance, like any other vehicle.
Of course they should. Just eat drivers taking the face off you! Cycling two aside on narrow roads so cars can't pass… jumping the lights, cycling on pavements with bike lanes empty!! Come in. Plate 'em and book em!
Ridiculous.
1) cyclists pay for the roads in the exact same way as car/motorcycle users – through their council tax. Vehicle excise duty is a tax for environmental damage that does NOT go to the roads, but to central taxation.
2) Car drivers are always going through red lights, especially temporary traffic lights. Also, how many drivers actually do 30mph in a 30 zone, or 40 in a 40 zone etc, hardly any. They break the law far more than cyclists.
3) car drivers/lorry drivers etc are the danger, they make ridiculous maneuvers on cyclists all the time.
This is simply a ridiculous conversation. We should be promoting cycling, looking at the air quality in cities, and thousands of people getting lung and cardiovascular diseases every year from terrible air quality.
Congestion and health related issues from breathing in exhaust particulates cost the UK a huge amount of money every year.
The UK Gov is not interested in trying to make a solution those things (cycling and active travel) harder to incentivise and wasting more money in the process.
Perhaps some of you see a large percentage of misbehaving riders but I assure you it isn't the vast majority by a long way. Go to London and see a city with normal people going about their commutes sensibility and legally on bicycles.
Just like knifes we don't put controls on their purchase and use because a few dicks decide to use them as weapons. You don't punish the many because of a bad few, you deal with them on a case by case basis.
Those who say cyclists have carte blanche to do what they wish on the roads usually never have tried riding on them, getting places on a bike comes with a risk of injury, that's already enough of a barrier to prevent the average person from trying, more reasons are not needed.
Many city's in the UK often have pollution levels above safe limits which leads to respiratory issues for young children. Congestion simply worsens this and reg plates on bikes would further discourage bicycle use, that's the last thing we need.
Spend more money to regulate bicycles that won't reduce death on the road.
Not only y0u have to encourage people to be on their bikes but also you need to promote and encourage people to follow the rules when you are on the road doesn't matter if you are on bike or inside a car
No. But I can imagine the GMB audience types are a yes.
I think the arguments for cycles to be regulated is not about cycles but about fairness.
Car users are paying through their teeth to use the roads through, whether it be through annual costs, congestion charges, fuel prices, or fines. What I see in this debate is "why don't cyclists pay the same charges and same penalties as I do".
We also have to understand that there is no such thing as a separate road tax. Roads are funded through regular taxes. What bikes do not pay is Vehicle Excise Duty – excise being a levy against demerit goods – which is essentially a tax on emissions.
Insurance is a good idea, and in fact many cyclists have insurance already through British Cycling or even public liability on their home insurance, but getting little Bobby at school to pay for his insurance will be a nightmare. I think this is best covered by national insurance.
And lastly on number plates, it would be nice to implement, but to get a number plate large enough to meaningfully read would only make sense on large, cumbersome bikes unless it's attached to the cyclist's clothing or backpack. There are already numberplates as wide as the rear tyre on hire bikes like Lime, and I bet nobody here has been able to make them out! At least we'd be able to slap £50 fines on the kids that run red lights, but at what cost to police…
Yup, stay in bed, although a article headed ‘Bed Rotting’ pointed out that was unsafe too. Mp outrage cop kills kid on a bike with police car, now facing disciplinary action. Answer bike registration plates and insurance, who are his Tory backers, who fixed the market? Incredible, the guy who walked off the pavement straight into me, the guy that pulled out of his drive knocking me off the bike, the guy in the right wheel waggon knocking me off the bike , as it was luckily , it was the bike under his wheels crushed and not me. What did all three of them say ‘ bloody cyclists! You should watch where you are going. Charming.
I drive a van a motorcycle, I drive courteously, give way to horses , cyclists and any other creature in the road including fellow humans.
The anger and outrage does not excuse or exempt any one for driving without due care and attention. Let’s not mention DVLA, they cannot cope as it is, don’t even go there about sending in eye test certificates. The roads are dangerous not in them selves but the danger is there in you the driver. Stick your number plates where ever you want but not o my bike. Lol a fine and 3 points for not displaying or having insurance for a bike? Oh so when are provisional licenses coming into force to ride a bike. As some said ‘ On her Bike’
they should have a cycling proficiency certificate, insurance and a number plate for identification.
they want to be treated the same as other vehicles on the road then they get the rough with the smooth
Invited Tim on but didnt let him answer a question,
Car users also pay TAX which cyclists dont and they think they own the roads! I agree with the sensible man
Taxing cyclists because they use the road is as logical as taxing pedestrians for using the pavement. Roads need to be maintained because they get torn apart by massive vehicles with kilowatts of power behind them, hence road tax. Cyclists simply don't have the power to shred tarmac like a lorry. I'm all for fines for traffic violations, just not tax for sensible people. Cycling should be affordable and promoted, and whilst we don't have suitable infrastructure for cycling, the rules of the road should be enforced.
Good idea. Registration and insurance – and don't forget training as many cyclists have a death wish. I unfortunately witnessed the death of a young lady who overtook a large lorry turning left, on the inside, she was knocked off and a back wheel crushed her head. I will NEVER get over that. Where I live they jump red lights, ride at night on unlit roads, wearing dark clothing and no lights. Let's not get into riding through pedestrians legitimately crossing at zebra and pelican crossings, riding the wrong way up one way streets. I could go on, but it gets boring and nothing will be done.
Cyclists & E-Scooters on footpaths are MENACES! I hope there is some way of controlling them.
I would also put them to have at least theory test passed, as a good majority of them have no idea about highway code 😔
Not this nonsense again !
E bikes need insurance and plates , there have been quiet a few deaths , they ride on the pavement they have no respect for any rules of the road , cyclists do run red lights , they ride on the pavement when it suits them . Cyclists should pay tax , car and van drivers are constantly having their pockets emptied. Also cyclists think their saving the planet and feel superior to everyone else
'Mallet and Madeley; cycling Britain's roads' < I want to see this show.
Licencing and registration is for slaves. Riding a bike without this bullshit is a freedom that must not be given up so easily.
Yes
It would be prohibitively expensive for households with loads of kids.
Pushing an AGENDA ,they gotta squeeze money out of you ,next they'll be BATTERY FIRES 🔥 ,DANGER DANGER
Richards saying if you're a shit why can't i be one
