Looking for a new bike to commute to work, I live in a relatively quiet New England town and have an 18 mile round trip commute to work (1300-1700’ of climbing). There are three ways of getting there, one on paved roads, one goes through dirt roads with a big climb and descent (adds 1 mile), and there’s also the option to cut through a state park using smooth single track and dirt park roads for about half the commute. I would love to find a bike that I could use for any of those rides depending on the day, but knowing that realistically 65-70% of the riding will be paved. As a mountain biker I would really like to stick with flat bars, but I’m having a hard time finding flat bar bikes with large tire clearances that aren’t “mountain” bikes. Think any of these bikes fit the bill? Any other suggestions? These are a few options I’ve found:
