We here at GCN are not proponents of the sometimes snobbish rules others swear by. However, there are a few rules we like to stick to. Whether this is being courteous to other cyclists, looking after your equipment, or simply obeying the rules of the road – some rules are not made to be broken. Here are out top 5 rules we think all cyclists should obey to make your bike riding safer, fun, and mishap free!

  1. 1. Thank vehicles who do the right thing
    2. Don't spit or clear your nose if riders are behind you (especially now with corona)
    3. Point out any road hazard
    4. Respect all other road users and rules
    5. Be safe, every other vehicle is bigger than a bicycle

  2. Spandex clad Road terrorists, they just do what the hell they want cycle through red lights ride on road then onto pavement back on to the road cycle on footpaths no damn bells to let pedestrians know they are coming bunch of arseholes

  3. I still am very impressed and amazed when I see cyclists actually stopped at traffic lights. I myself am about to start cycling after 35 years off the bike. Wish me luck! I am a bit nervous but also very excited. And I intend to use the road and not the pavement.

  4. Bicyclists in Costa Rica almost caused numerous accidents today. You need to ride in single file if you can't keep up with the traffic speed. Costa Rican drivers are used to safely driving around all kinds of obstacles on the road. People walk on the side of the road horses motorcycles dogs. You riding 3 across blocking the road forcing people to pass dangerously almost caused three accidents today and Tamarindo

  5. Cyclist are the rudest bunch of people I’ve ever seen. 15 or so ganged up on a 12 mile curvy road long line of cars behind. Did they pull over at the places that would allow? NO. Bicycles should not be allowed to impede motorized traffic

  6. I was hoping that these were going to be cycling specific rules but, no, you had to include the red light one, didn't you?
This just reinforces the tired old trope that irrational drivers trot out, whenever they've run out of any reasonable arguments.
Stopping at red lights is just a basic rule of the road, and doesn't belong in this list.

  7. A better idea is to always wear fluorescent jackets and lights ,as the clothing that you are wearing will earn you a Darwin award you blend in with the road unless it's a very bright day

  8. Hey here is an idea, get off the road. It's not 1915 cars go much faster than 10 miles an hour now days so it is stupidly dangerous for you to ride your bike on the road at all. Go to a park or a track made for that sort of thing where it's safe for you to do so if you don't want to be yelled at or berated. The laws that allow bikes on the road are idiotically outdated for modern times.

  9. Laws. STOP at traffic lights
    Do not undertake
Do not ride up a one way street the wrong way
Do not ride mor than two abreast
    And many others.
    Not this crap

  10. i really knew that cyclists SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD AT ALL. Reasons being:
    (1) Whether cyclists signal or dont, they ARE ON the Road, the minute the cyclists get out of the extreme left, they ARE ALREADY ON THE ROAD❗️
    (2) They dun get Road Tax nor Vehicle iNsurance. So to be really considerate, all cyclists shd only ride on the Cycling Tracks, so what are the Cycling Tracks built for😠❓

  11. Waving at other cyclists – are you turning, or going to do something? Don't ride a black bike, dressed in black, with no lights and often no reflectors…came across one a few nights ago as I was about to come out of a side turning…I saw him, but only just and only because I was checking really hard at that particular side road as it is a black spot. Oh you mention cleaning your bike, I'd have thought a little thing like maintaining it would be front and centre!

  12. Basically yes you are on a bike..you still need to follow the rules of a car though and not be a duche. Why? Because people like me lump you all together and hate cyclist more because of it.

  13. "Snobbish rules"??? Like BASIC MANNERS? As a pedestrian, I am tired of being nearly run by cyclists on shared footpaths coming up behind me without ANY warning, NO "Excuse me" and IF they have a bell, as required by law here in Ireland, they NEVER use it. Going through red lights is common, too, like the rules of the road don't apply to them.

  14. Number[lates and insurance for CYCLISTS so dash cam footage can be sent to the police for prosecution of their traffic infringements
