Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen um this is the um Planet session of the uh World design assembly 2023 Tokyo um to begin with I would like to share with you some of my thoughts on this session design for planet um obviously the um the Practical Foundation of this kind of argument is

Uh in environmental crisis or um crisis uh related issues as in the sorry the U um environmental emergency environmental crisis and all sorts um and of course um these kind of subjects are widely disc discussed across the globe uh particularly uh for example um design for Planet Festival uh just held uh in

UK uh and of course the elaka foundation Summit and so on and so forth but here we’d like to broadly discuss this uh issues surrounding design for the planet whether it is about the environmental crisis or the uh uh how we can respond to the um uh sustainability related issu of the

Um in the broader context so uh without further Ado I would like to uh hand over to uh one of my um panelist today for uh his introduction uh starting from uh Mr aawa uh let me introduce uh one by one AK TKA some uh is a currently a

President of the Japan industrial design Association and CEO of a design company Noz and he’s a design strategist focusing on alternatives for a helpful future and uh corando Hey June but anyway uh isan is the advocate of The evolutionary thinking which draws from the natural phenomenon of biological Evolution and the design of

Creative educations so uh this session uh allows each part um panelist to give them a talk for 15 minutes first and then we’ll have a break uh after that for half an hour when we come back together at 4:00 we’ll have a share discussion together with the maranon who

Is uh on stage this morning for 40 minutes to wrap up so um that’s the schedule so uh if you could uh start your presentation okay that would be great thank you very much so first of all uh thank you very much for choosing Planet session and uh

Yeah I’m akawa as he introduced and um yeah as he introduced that I’m the president of Japan industrial design Association so uh the border of this whole conferences uh so and this planet session for me it’s really really important since I or we strongly believe that planetary issue will be the next

Design issue I mean the central issue uh which we really need to think the most so and we really empowered by yeah I think you also was empowered by Mariana session actually later Mariana s will join for our discussion as well uh but for the first of all that yeah uh before

My presentation yeah this is also my presentation but let’s uh let’s kind of confirm what kind of situation is uh current planetary uh situation is actually the yeah it’s kind of coincidence that we use the same same slide uh this is called planetary boundary and this this

Has yeah many of the issue actually we are facing challenges like of course climate change but you know yeah the climate change in amount is not super high compared to for example biochemical flows like the like like the saturation of like the nitrogen and phosphorus or also biodiversity has so kind of crucial

Damage so there are many challenges but as well that you know within that we are kind of living quite happy life uh with yeah you can you can have any everything in the street but yeah it’s kind of tricky current situation is that you know we are not responsible to where to come

From and where it goes so in a way that uh of course uh we we kind of keep uh keep rening renting the the resource of natural or the the future generation uh and uh and also consuming and and trusting to uh the nature so our civilization is now kind of living in

The delusion that human being is only the society so and because of yeah with the conclusion that we are facing actually the gigantic uh Extinction uh which is often called the sixth time in the history of every organism with this four billion years so the last time was actually the

The the uh 66 million years ago so it’s a kind of quite serious problem and we are facing uh many of challenges like how to reduce greenhouse gases uh yeah it’s kind of exceptional within this uh for 400,000 years but not only that you know uh the disaster natural disaster is keep

Increasing it currently so what we are doing through design is to keep challenging these issues uh for example for how how to uh how how to prevent disaster or how to H how to uh how to make more uh renewable energy a uh uh accept uh accessible or

How to calate CO2 or such kind of stuffs but today what I would like to talk about is adaptation and we started the project adapt that is about climate change adaptation and adapt this word is the kind of coined word uh with integrated adaptation and development together

Since that we need to develop but more adaptive way uh it’s a kind of tricky issue that usually development is more important to uh for the developing Society uh compared to how how to adapt ourself to the Natural uh for the natural environment or ecosystem or also

That to to protect ourselves from the natural disasters as well uh you know that the climate change is a kind of huge challenges uh so for example we are currently facing EV almost every year that somewhere in the world we’re facing huge flood or huge natural natural disaster

This year was in Syria last year uh was in Pakistan it was kind of severe situation was there and yeah uh this is a kind of uh confirmation that I think most of you may know that the currently uh climate change uh for for tackling climate

Change we are having kind of twoo strong criteria or measurement uh one is mitigation and the other is adaptation and these two kind of criteria uh is in a way that already getting popular uh but as well especially mitigation uh mitigation is about to reduce greenhouse

Gases so it’s a kind of easy to calculate in a way but how about adaptation so you know that mitigation is to mitigate the risk of uh climate uh no to mitigate the uh the climate change uh happen like for example uh yeah for example uh

The uh in the best uh for example the scenario in until 200 2000 uh we may face uh 4.5 degrees C celsus increase the increase the temperature or we can keep uh to 1.5 Celsius but you know it’s not about uh only the matter of the temperature but

Actually the as I already shown that this the risk of disaster is getting increasing because of it because the uh be because the unstableness of the environment is uh uh stability of environment is influenced by uh such uh such change changing of climate so adaptation is anyway that we need to

Survive the situation after the climate change already we are predicting climate change uh so so but you know adaptation is about everything like our wear if we are too hot then we can remove or it’s also about our energy it’s also about our food uh or thisas a prevention or

Everything can be adaptation but it’s kind of quite tricky uh to deal with uh so what I now trying to do is to structurizing uh adaptation more kind of accessible to e and easier to understand uh currently for example ICC report or in many aspect that often deal with

Adaptation strategy is in four category like tral sea River and human but I believe adaptation is the relationship between our civilization and nature itself since that our civilization needs to adapt and also that the adaptation is originally the terminology from biological evolution uh so yeah you know

That I feel some of the gap between the the dealing of the world of adaptation from climate change SLE Point View to biological biological science side side of point of view so I need to I feel that uh may be kind of the hint to Lear from uh biological evolution or or or

Adaptive Evolution kind of science to to use as a proper metaphor uh for structurizing uh what kind of strategy can be possible uh to adapt our civilization to the coming changing environment and you know I’m a Mania of adaptive Evolution since I’m a designer but you know I often feel that yeah we

Cannot compete with nature since the nature nature design is really fantastic and it’s so beautiful uh as Myan my friend was talked yeah she she is the chair of the Mata design but you yeah often often we we kind of we feel defeated by the natural design so I’m

Kind of into natural design uh within this maybe 20 years and uh yeah and I learned a lot from adaptive evolution in nature so and one time that I felt that this can be used uh to to know the whole structure of adaptation and we constructed a three

Steps like how to define for the first the area to be adapted uh you know that usually uh when you develop City uh we often ignore the unit of nature like like the waterers shed uh but it’s kind of quite good to re understanding small water shell like 100 Hector

Uh and set set Conservation area area along with that and also that we can set the kind of development area and also we can calculate the capacity of water or saturation inside of each of the uh each of the waterers shed then it it should

Be much easier uh to to pre prevent the the whole in a way that whole ecosystem or whole whole ecosystem or whole D biodiversity in that area since that biodiversity the water shed is the unit also of the biodiversity in each area so we are currently working together with uh with quo Forest

In m m m Peninsula uh that here is quite wonderful Forest that yeah they they prevent uh the biodiversity as for the mo most in kind of broader broad whole Tokyo area uh even that they have quite small small Forest they they only have 70

Hectar but as well that you know I often working for for example the disaster prevention or renewable energy or C economy but you know I wanted to structurize what kind of structure is behind of uh such residence or regenerative ecosystem or system and I found that yeah some of the some some of

The function or most of the function can be found in our body like you know that if You observe your body then you have percept ity or recoverability or redundancy or cyclicity or flexibility or robustness but our society is often only relying on robustness like making

The kind of hard W like this this building but we may need to have more soft wall which has perceptivity or recoverability inside like you know about perceptivity we may be able to sense for example coming disaster like using for example satellite or we can we can make a kind

Of recoverable concrete for making the building uh or also that you know that uh okay let’s let me skip that I’m also running the time yeah yeah these are my my Works which is also relating to to the uh the recoverability but anyway uh and cyclicity like for making the such accom

Inside of the local community since that that is quite quite workable not only for mitigating climate change but also uh all for also increasing our resiliency uh since that you can you can uh so I’m also running the Renewable Energy company which tries to to enhance local usage of renewable energy and also

Helping uh the helping local revitalization of the place where where the power plant is existing we are currently dealing with about uh about about a billion uh kilowatt hour in in total current we are currently quickly growing uh and H this is our office that yeah uh we can kind of

Saturate the locally developed debilities to some beautiful interiors and we can maybe uh apply some of flexibility like you know you know like the dumper in the in in this building also uh Pro provide some flexibility but as well the usage of flex ibility is also there like you know

Uh this is a face seed which I made with only three cut from the usual uh A4 crear file but this kind of yeah I believe that this is also one part of flexibility that we can use uh the different purposes uh and also robustness like we

Can provide some of the robust robust structure like this concrete but as well not only that not only such Hardwares but also we ourself need to be resilient uh but you know uh not only the Adaptive evolution in body but also every living organism uh Abol Its Behavior to be adapted to the

Situation and we can learn from there like you know uh uh it’s kind of difficult to read but for example uh we can supply memorability or predictability or Mobility or communicability or uh cooperativity or observability of each person person in local area then they may uh they may save their life by

Themselves so it’s about software uh so actually yeah we can learn many from the nature like we can also learn about Hardware but not only for that we can learn software how to how to act for coming disaster as well and uh you know

That yeah we we may uh we may need to more to be in that to to know the some uh strange situation happen or not or we can also yeah so we are currently trying to to to give the uh to make the application to uh to measure uh

The Carbone score of each of person uh or also that we may be able to provide the memory of the past disaster uh yeah let’s skip but or we can uh we can kind of teach some of the predictability that what kind of hint

Can be can can be the com can be the hint of communist sttion or also we need to uh we we need to provide some way to to move from there uh after the earthquake or after the after the the fla uh so the mobility will will serve

Some of the resiliency as well uh and of course we need to cooperate and we need to communicate as well so uh so shall we skip but anyway what I would like to do is that you know uh for thinking about whole picture of adaptation is kind of

Tricky uh but uh these kind of uh criteria can be used for rethinking about uh coming design what kind of design can supply The Residency of the society and hopefully uh hopefully this metaphor and this metaphor I believe is important is that you know adaptation is very very important matter for every

Everyone literally from child to adult uh but uh because it’s kind of complic complicating so I believe that if we can use this kind of metaphor then they can Lear by your body uh or by by the by quite understandable situation in the nature so we are currently uh working on

This adapt M project for both cting planning in Indonesia or Philippine or some other places so yeah I hope to develop this project in the future thank you very much uh uh thank you Tas um many of the uh Concepts uh he’s pointed out can be further explored on

The faculty of Art and Design Institute to technology banan uh dnan serves as a banan city of design focal point in the UNESCO creative cities Network and is on the uh executive committee of Indonesia creative cities Network as well she’s also a pioneering uh graphic artist and

Publishes a graphic diary so uh if you could uh H I know have you oh okay good if you could start your presentation that would be great thank you thank you for the generous introduction um yes so designers um all over the world have been trying to make the world

Better and they do it bit by bit maybe and maybe if they have strong resources they do it uh completely different but uh there’s a time where the whole world are forced to come to a halt and then now when we start to uh ready to push

Play again uh how do you do it what happen so this is when designers are forced to use their ability to reach have a vision and try to make action plans and strategies of how to uh make it better do we go back to the old habit

Or what can we do because uh if we have to rethink how the world works and we already felt how the world didn’t work uh we for example suddenly there’s no pollution because there’s no uh emission from uh uh vehicles and we have to reassess the impact of culture and art

Because suddenly we cannot go go to concert there’s no Cinema it’s depressing although we always consider entertainment as a maybe tertiary needs maybe the fourth need uh after food and shelter and clothing but then we feel that without culture without art without creativity uh mental breakdown uh and

Then we have to accelerate the digital digital turn of course people have been uh exposed to um uh digital technology and so on uh but then happens bit by bit and people who don’t have access stay unaccessible but then when everyone’s uh forced to for example do the schooling

Through internet then you have to provide those Internet to the remote area to the any area there usually you don’t think about and so on and we shift how we work and socialize of course because nobody have to nobody’s allowed to meet uh in person uh not to hug not

To touch your friends and all and then we actually lose the urban life the hustle and bustle the traffic jam everything that we are used to then suddenly every uh everybody has to stay separately but then we also have a dilemma of older urgencies when people are already getting used to uh talking

In person so no longer just talking to a screen but then suddenly you have to go back to the screen again or when people start to realize that it’s great to take public transport then you uh then you reduce solution suddenly it’s not safe for anyone anymore then you take your

Car again and so on uh and then of course there uh production of food packages uh we are getting used to uh getting uh food sent delivered to our homes even those um even those who are not used to uh buying food at home they have to do it and now they’re getting

Used to it because of the convenience so now we end up with all these packages and all so uh this this is actually derived from the talk of Charles Landry when uh during Co so we we did this online uh webinar and so on also uh this

Is a case of uh West Java uh so bandong is the capital city of West Java in Indonesia and West Java is the most populated uh Province it has 50 million people Indonesia in total has 270 something uh million people so uh here in West japa we found out that uh 80%

Smes had to close down uh uh 14,000 something workers have to stay home and so on but then we also see business that thrive during the pandemic so those in the logistics those in the communication uh Digital internet and those in uh food delivery and also in uh Wellness uh

Services so I remember in uh during the three years the selling of bike is really high so you have to if you want to buy a Bramton for example you have to uh wait uh two months or so then you can get yours so it’s really a trend people

Getting uh back to uh herbal food organic and so on and so on so where can designers take part in this uh how can we enhance the positiveness of lifestyle that is uh that is getting uh popular among people so how do we proceed so what what

I’m going to show after this is uh our experience is when designers take part in making policy recommendation action strategy and so on at the higher level because uh we saw that if we uh talk or we or if we are um if we succeed to have the team of creativity creative

Economy creative Industries including design on the higher level then you can get a systemic uh impact after that and this is just a a model of how future designers should think because as designers we have this um tools we have our skills very tangible skills including uh sketching to 3D designing

And so on we have our empathy which is uh what design thinking is uh always on about and what we need to make a human- centered uh development we have our design thinking which is too important to be left to designers only so we have to share that

Uh to everybody we have our attitude because designers still have their ego uh a lot of good designers of mine uh friends those who really with good brands and all they all have their ego to of course we they have to have personality and so on and so on so uh

Designers are equipped with this but then they have to also uh understand the context because they want their design to be used they want their design to be desirable so they have to know the context but then they have to know also the new narratives so here designer is

Like a Superman uh who always have to uh consider everything in whatever they do so within the context and the new narrative they would have these future Visions because designers are uh they are trained to to make a scenario of how things can be so they don’t explain how

Things are but they always have this imagination that should be workable but then they are also faced with this future challenges uh serious things are for example climate that also includes uh natural disasters and so on uh food security energy uh health and so on and uh going back to the bottom uh

The the result of designers it can be objects artifacts it can be Services guidelines it can be Services uh sorry systems or programs including policies and Frameworks and this should answer the uh future challenges that’s why the arrow is going up so uh what I’m talking about next is also um inclined to

Discuss about how we do it at the global South so this is the first attempt to have creativity discussed on the table at the global level uh through G20 so in G G20 2022 which was in Riad uh one of the policy papers argues that creative

Uh economy is a sector that can provide inclusive and sustainable sustainable jobs for the future for the Youth and women and uh people with different abilities and so on so this little blue person if you see it that’s uh that’s supposed to represent a creative person or creative people that have to answer

Uh the sdgs and it’s going through this uh uh challenges because it was written in 2020 the biggest challenge then was the pandemic of course but uh this blue person is equipped with uh the skills the knowledge it’s supported by the financial institutions and so on and by

Using technology so it has to go through the T um it actually can uh create future job so inclusive creative economy and the future of work in this paper we argue that every creative person have the main these main attributes that can help them create the future so first

They have the interpersonal ability in Creative economy ecosystem so they don’t see themselves as I’m the CEO or I’m the director I’m the boss of everyone but they see their um function their role in a community they have high order cognitive skill they have uh they don’t

Want to be the same as others okay you design good I can design better so they always look for originality uh personal experience oriented and they have also unique narratives and also the third one is they are usually technologically savvy so everything that comes then they usually uh always want

To explore and this helps in creating the future and that’s the argument for 2020 next uh when it was held in Italy there’s a thing tank 20 uh they also produced this creative economy 2030 uh by then the pandemic is still on so we are looking into other possibilities how creativity can help

Build the future so first is there should be synchronization of Standards protocols and definitions because as I mentioned before if you talk about creativity to people at higher level bureaucrats politicians those decision makers they usually think of it as entertainment Leisure Time and so on which is not serious that’s why uh it’s

Not too interesting for uh impact investors for example it’s just a an entertainment so there should be an understanding that creativity is serious business and if you do it well you can provide uh for many people uh and also we discuss about informal workers at the global South um uh usually is dominated

Bymes small and medium Enterprises uh whose workers are not always um say formal workers as in definition of uh the most developed uh countries they can be like fenders they can be like uh people with no certificate or no uh uh formal papers to say that they are this

Kind of workers or that kind of workers um so we need to find a form where you can really aggregate these kind of different workers so they they can be counted in the facilities as well of course there’s a question of promotion of Digit digital literacy that

Provides work also for youth because the global South are mostly dominated by youth uh in their um demographic um and there’s also recognition of the importance of culture in strategy for sustainability for all um this is also about inclus inclusive uh creative economy that should involve uh

Everyone the year after G20 was hosted by Indonesia and we were involved in the urban 20 um uh policy recombination so there are seven points uh mostly has to do with creative City and all but we emphasize is also an informal economy in the city uh and also circular creative

Economy in the city and so on so the the conversation keeps going on uh this this uh discussion is uh being carried on at that level but then there’s also this Asian development Bank Institute they also held this uh uh policy brief about people and the next economy and here the

Argument is uh still looking at the global South where um the majority of workers workers are not registered as formal workers because um well because I’m in the global creative economy Council and it is obvious that for us in the global South informal economy means this kind ofme informal workers and so

On who are sometimes hired to do jobs while in the developed countries informal workers usually means Freelancers or those who don’t want to pay taxes but that’s not the case for us so that’s why for example if we have festivals or if we have a traditional uh huge event usually uh these women

Children whoever they make decorations but they don’t have the certificate as for example decoration maker so you cannot count them in a formal way uh this is how we need um intermediary organizations and uh government should also provide U easier task for them and then uh this is the global um

Creative economic console I talk about so we produced this in 2021 we presented this in the world uh uh creative uh World WCC World Conference on Creative economy in Dubai uh we have uh 11 points that actually also bring up the role of the creatives in the development uh

Strategy uh this is among the last ones uh from the policies uh WCC was held in B again for the third time uh last year and came up with a road map that actually provide uh options or references for countries who want to proceed with their creative economy

Whether uh answering current state or for future landscape or conceptu as a conceptual ideas or concrete action and here uh each country can choose uh which fits the most but then for Indonesia it’s uh it’s these yellow uh boxes uh the one that are marked with the red check

Uh is among other is embracing the roles and contribution of informal economy into the uh creative economy aggregators this is to involve a majority of our smmes into the bigger industrial um scenarios and also culture-based Innovative experiments and future discoveries and this is because we still have u a lot of cultural resources

Traditions and so on that is not explored enough uh as our uh capital for developing CA economy um after this uh I will um give uh some examples of what we mean by those so this uh six Circle says um I hope it is really it really represents the global South so usually

We have high diversity of natural and cultural resources that are not all export yet we are usually youth dominated uh we are every time we open a job or something we have to make sure that is as labor intensive as possible and usually also in the form of micro

And small Enterprises so not as a huge uh brand or company but usually smaller ones but then uh organized in a an an an aggregation uh we should use appropriate technology in the sense that uh we talk about digital uh era digital access and

So on we have a huge disparity so a lot of people don’t have access to that but then those who have should also use that actually to uh provide or to promote jobs for for the the ones who who don’t and here I wrote scale and balance because usually uh designers also they

If they they use this technology they use the resources they have to check uh if their demand supply and demand is inbalance or if their uh Material supplies and so on also in order because our our um challenge is also the natural uh dep with all the disasters all the illegal

Logging all the forest fires and so on so we have to uh make sure of that and this is just an example of what we did uh it’s done by different uh entities some are universities some are Brands but then this is by young people who all already realized that they cannot they

Can no longer uh rely solely on natural resources so they don’t rely on economic activity that is based on extract in natural resource so no more digging minerals cutting trees but let’s use our creativity uh to create uh to to touch this uh issues so uh about plastic waste

About uh food security and how would you make diversity in food again and how would you uh reduce the waste and also if you do fashion how you do it responsibly and also using digital technology for equality and there’s this uh this is some from campus and some from uh uh

Communities so we also created a Fagan leather from mushroom and then this is from uh Bal Palm because there are hectars and hectars of uh this uh this plants and the the leaves is just left there to burn so we made kind of um um

Dice to make plates and all and we use also natural materials like bamboo to make Prosthetics and to make other products and uh immersive experience uh we did it in an open space so it’s a concept for post pandemic Ed edutainment tourism destination uh and so

On and also it is important to have uh uh higher level institutions like a Ministry so for example this is the ministry of Corporation and small medium Enterprises So at their basement this is actual basement of their office so it’s a huge one they built a future small and

Medium Enterprise lab and this is to actually uh provide because you know small and micro Enterprise they don’t have uh budget to do R&D for their products starting from the food uh uh food and beverage uh business to craft and so on so this ministry helped them

Uh develop their products uh out of charge so they can come like saying okay I have this kind of rice but I want to make it taste like so can you develop it here or okay we have this kind of uh uh new variation of um material can we

Develop it like uh so so this uh Ministry have this lab for future Mobility craft fashion and food and it’s important that they have uh they supported this kind of Direction and go back to here uh I think uh those can fit some of these uh boxes and then we are

Still developing in that way and is it’s important that to have the Synergy of different uh stakeholders to make this happen and with this I end my presentation thank you thank you very much um since we have some time left um I mean additional time left I would like

To um ask you one um simple question um you did mention something about uh synchronizations of the circular economy principles and ideas to the global South activ activities in the global South uh whilst uh acknowledging the uh High diversity of uh uh of the cultural and natural resources in the uh grow Global

South how how do you sort of um move between these two the global North leet design and development principles on one hand on the other hand uh you are also acknowledging the uh cultural and the ecological diversity of the uh region you are working in to make it uh more

Clear maybe I use an example so um a clear example is that in Bandung we have an area for uh manufacturing a multinational brand of uh fashion I don’t mention the brand but there’s plenty so bandong is actually a place for production but then uh you see if

You go to the brand website they say we practice sustainable blah blah but then in reality if you come to that area it’s so sad that they pollute the river they pollute the soil every day we have tons of uh uh fabric waste and so on while

People come to work there there’s the area one Factory is about 20 to 25,000 people so how they live is really not uh not very humane so then we did the research and so on and so on so we want to build that area into a healthier happier area but that’s not possible

Because the not possible um at the beginning because the local government tend to okay we we cannot do anything about it the factory owner also oh no no no I will I will keep my workers the international brand said oh yeah we care about that but they don’t do anything

But they don’t want this to be published so anyway so Synergy is then uh then the community is doing it themselves because then we do the research mapping and so on uh if you Google it up we have this uh online already so it’s called Uh fashion Village lab in chigona in

Bandong so we did some efforts we asked the local people to express what they want and then we built or we established a cooperation institution with the women uh so they can uh have capital for their um because if they don’t work in the factory outside the factory they also

Work something else they do uh catering they do other businesses so it’s it’s that kind of development although it’s very small because it’s an area just in bandong but I think uh you can do most of that in factories other factories in other places uh as long as you know uh

Which part you can tap on I hope that helps okay um quite interesting in in in the in the context of the autonomous designing uh in that that you are really uh acting the uh front edge of the participatory design practices it’s not really just about asking people what

They want you ask you know just like Tan’s argument of the adapt you are um encouraging the agent to uh optimize itself so to that end I think it’s quite interesting and it can be the new emerging sort of design concept I thought um which is great thank you very

Much so uh let’s uh move on finally to the uh mon s Monica k minen s is uh from a United Kingdom uh but I believe your family name is a German and Scottish one Hungarian German hungar and Scottish Germany okay um multinational so um Monica son is a senior design and

Innovation manager at Elm macara Foundation uh after completing her ma at the University of Bon she worked as a uk- based uh leadership consultant focusing on culture change and Innovation currently she’s uh she AIDS senior design leaders in promoting a circular economy so uh mon if you’d like

To uh introduce your case uh that be great thank you um well yeah my name is Monica K McKenzie and uh yeah I’m very excited to be here today um first time in Japan as well so yeah so I’m bringing the perspective to this conversation that um

To regenerate the Earth we need to design for a circular economy and um so at the El mcara Foundation we believe that by Design we can eliminate waste and pollution circulate materials and products for um as long as possible and regenerate nature to create an economy that benefits people um the planet and

Businesses and here you see the three principles again but in Japanese um so yeah the circular economy is a world changing idea and and uh it’s uh it captivated um Academia governments and businesses it’s got a huge momentum and commitment behind it and it provides a um so this is the

Butterfly diagram you can also find in English on our website um it provides a system solution framework that tackles Global challenges um and is is is able to address uh some of the the big challenges we’re facing right now such as climate change biodiversity loss and uh and waste and

Pollution but let’s go back to where we are now um so today uh the um the economic system we live in is a a take make waste linear economy so resources in at the beginning and waste out at the end and this linear economy is hugely extractive uh so producing greenhouse

Gas emissions that um are uh fueling the the climate crisis that we are in uh but and also the linear economy does not manage um resources such as land use water use and resource resources such as minerals uh on the long term so we all agree I think

That we need to move from this linear economy to Circular one and and now it’s really time to move from ambition into action so how can circular economy tackle climate change and what role does the design play we often uh tend to look primarily

At how energy is um is produced is is is used uh when we look at greenhouse gas emissions um research has uh research at the foundation has shown that 45% of the emissions actually come from the way products are um produced and and used and

Um so what we when we look at this we um we we need to uh address so in order to address these 45% of the emissions we need to to fundamentally look at um how we are uh approaching uh value Creation in the first place um and we need to

Look at how we are building on um uh the three fundamental principles so designing our waste and pollution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain keeping products and materials in use to retain um the energy embodied and regenerating natural systems to sequester carbon soil and

Products and the circular economy uh is really also about harnessing design to reimagine and recreate systems where um where Services Goods flow through the economy and in this way it can help us tackle climate change uh and tackle the interconnected Global crisis that we are facing so design is fundamental to

Creating a more regenerative future and to address the root causes of the linear economy we need to go upstream and look at the way we produce uh and use things so from the closest we wear to to the um buildings we live in to the systems that deliver food all of that is

Designed around us and also can be redesigned and uh decisions made at the design stage set in motion how products are being made used and whether it stays in the economy and produces value over a long term or whether they’re being wasted um so once the last thing to

Point out uh and you wonder why there’s this egg uh once designed it’s hard to reverse so you can’t unscrambled an egg design is a force for change from Innovative products to disruptive business models um to redesigning entire companies and value chains and design has the power to reshape our

Economy and at the foundation we have a focus in design in in different sectors such as Plastics fashion and food so let’s stay with food to give you an example what if food could tackle climate change what if food could build biodiversity we asked these questions in our latest design L report

Um today just three crops rice corn and weed provides 60% of the world calories and the way it’s grown and how it’s grown is a hugely extractive a circular economy applied to the Food Systems could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49% by 2050 so rather bending nature to produce

Food how could food um how could food be produced and designed for nature to thrive as part of the food redesign re research we applied a speculative design approach uh and created four concepts for food products from a nature positive regenerative future the aim was to help Business Leaders and investors to

Imagine what the future could look like what this circular future of food could look like and this product here is one of the four um explored where we designed in collaborate which were designed in collaboration with Farmers um for nature so we all um yeah love uh good food and we

Know it’s essential but um we also uh value good clothes and and uh so jeans the jeans redesign project is an really interesting one um but before going into that project just maybe to highlight again what we’re facing here so the fashion industry is is a a huge polluter

And a a huge contributor to The Climate crisis so as we speak every second a truckload of um textiles is being landfilled or incinerated um and this is why this example that I’m about to bring is is hugely important uh and yeah so this is a multi-stakeholder project uh that started in

2019 and it didn’t just focus on uh the redesign of this uh hugely iconic product of genes which we can all relate to and was part of the reason was chosen in the first place um but it also uh recognized that uh we that we needed to

Look at the the systems redesign here around the product for it to work so it brought together various actors from the system to look at how they could redesign that together and make it happen so when we started this product uh this project genes were very hard to reuse or

Recycle and the foundations fashion team worked with an initial group of 16 um companies to develop circular guide guidelines to redesign genes so a few years later and here the output um redesign genes uh followed uh these principles to be used more made to be made again and made from safe recycled

And renewable inputs and about um 500,000 redesigned genes were brought to Market between 19 to 21 after four years of the project participation that genes redesign uh project has grown from 16 to 100 participants from across the value chain from fabric uh Mills garment manufacturers Brands and retailers from 25 countries and

Literally all continents of the world and yeah here you can see all the participating organizations the project demonstrated how circular design can become the new Norm in the fashion industry more than onethird of the participants reported that uh these um new principles uh they also started applying

In in other garments such as uh jackets or shirts or bags and hats so and whenever I speak to to I work a lot with the fashion companies there’s still new stories that come up all the time so there’s a snowball effect that started um which is really great to see and

2third of the participants shared that um they have circular business model pilot schemes in place um so yeah but one thing to to highlight and that was the very part of the design of that project in the first place is that without systems change the progress that has started

To happen in some way cannot be sustained and cannot be realized in the long term oh yeah and then the other thing to highlight is that from 21 to 23 1 and a half million redesigned genes were put on the market so massive growth from the initial number

Um so yeah back to the systemic change and we we therefore need to realize um that uh we need more people uh and more designers to take leadership um and this is where uh our recent report the Adaptive strategy for cyc design comes in so designers are key influencers and

We heard that already in the previous presentations but yeah designers are key influencers and designing products and services business models and and systems um so that they can be regenerative by Design they help us create empowering Visions they Inspire and guide us they um they they help us move into new

Directions and like Aisha said I don’t know who was there uh yesterday uh but Aisha presented in her keynote um that designers can help find Space to imagine so this is really about creating the space basis to reimagine um the way we live work and uh and

Consume but designers are also in the position to ask critical questions uh and act more systemically challenge current assumptions unfortunately the though designers are underutilized when it comes to organizational redesign their skills in user research in seeing the system um facilitating collaboration developing skills uh prototypes creating useful tools uh

Setting new rules could be used a lot more to help organizations shift and create these enabling conditions we we’ve recently talked a lot about um linear lockings and organizational loins that actually prevent even senior leaders and Senior design leaders to take effective action and is a massive problem

So that come leads me to the last section of my presentation within the alic Arthur Foundation I have the pleasure to work uh with circular design leaders uh a group of critical design influencers from across various Industries who are driving the adoption of ccle design in their organizations so there are from these

Following organizations and there their senior leaders such as Chief design officers Global vice presidents directors or heads of design off with hundreds of design team members um or of coming from Innovation uh working from various geographies underneath them so the group was set up to help design designers feel more connected uh and

More empowered and building circular economy momentum and action in their organization so what’s what’s their role they they work with organizational leadership they Empower their teams uh and communicate ccle design progress to wider audiences and in 2021 I initiated a new more handson approach uh with this group running annual iterative design Sprints

Uh to inspire effective systems level interventions and to help them embed circular design practice into their um into their operations and these are some pictures from uh our latest Sprint this September where we explored new forms of value creation which is a a very important topic to the circle design leaders where

We used systems modeling approaches on specific company cases that the design leaders brought uh to the Sprint uh and and help them better understand how they can shift from a linear operational model to a more circular one so this process was inspired by an immersive experience and

Time and observations and nature at the beginning of the process and help them to to rethink the design process they apply and have them be more um yeah more underpin by living systems principles from nature I’m I’m very grateful that I get to design and facilitate these processes

With sex design leaders I love their passion and their commitment uh they’re hugely ambitious and I’m also really humbled to see how every year when the C design leaders come together um they form a really strong Vision uh and the alignment um that Fosters the mindset

And the culture change we would love to see in the organizations um but also it helps them to inspire their uh their leaders senior leaders and Executives um to be part of of that Collective movement that we need towards the regenerative future that we’d all be thrilled to live in so I

That you used to describe the activities relating to the um design for circular economy circular design uh one is living System Theory another is the systemic design I I do understand that the especially the systemic design is becoming quite a big thing in the UK but

It’s not the major term to be used uh in Japan at least so if you explain a little bit about that first and foremost and also then how that relates to the living System Theory kind of idea I think it’ be really good to uh elaborate

A little bit more to uh uh to maybe to explain a little bit more about the nature of a regenerative design or regenerate what what you mean by regeneration what the regenerative future okay right so I wonder which order do I take now um so when we talk

About um so we had the living systems principles regenerative future and systemic design systemic design yeah so um maybe a personal story that might help probably on all three actually um when I uh I spent some time in Brazil um and uh I I spent a lot of time there um it

Was one of those nature reserves and I I got to walk around uh in in this beautiful environment spend a lot of time in the uh local Forest as well and I I at some point uh had I suppose some you could call it epiphany but I was um

In this beautiful little clearing and I could see how uh it was it was very um dense with life of All Sorts you had maybe a a fallen tree that uh was rotting but at the same time you saw all sorts of mushrooms grow in it you saw uh

Another Tree in full bloom but also had um must have had another 12 different species of other plants grow it and and they all s of seemed beautifully you know in a symbiotic relationship I’m throwing on more words but you know in harmony with each other growing together

Let’s put it that way and uh and so there’s really something beautiful to see around the life cycles around how one uh feeds the other and how they’re in this sort of harmonious state which might not always be the case right so I’m not saying all of nature is in this

Beautiful harmonious State and there are predators and there’s food that’s you know eaten and all of it but the point is that I think for me that was uh um that sort of experience of living systems um where uh it’s it’s not predefined like this is exactly what it

Has to be you know you could there it can emerge a certain way where you don’t expect it and uh and that you could see principles there you know continuous feedback loops is something that you hear a lot in in systems conversations and other things and um and there’s

Something around the the the the living that also as as uh referring to Nature that you can’t predict you can’t say this is exactly how it’s meant to be it’s it’s more like this linear process we often talk about right like and and that very much business as usual is is

Living in like where you have that exact plan and you follow but even then you know things don’t always happen according to plan and I think that might be the easiest way maybe to relate to um that inspiration and uh in terms of regenerative future uh often when we

Talk about sustainability and the word uh sustain probably captures it is is sort of the sustain what is and and that just brings us that far and maybe when things were still thriving more in nature in the past that what made sense but now what we with all the previous

Data we looked at from the presentations we moved maybe beyond that stage where we see uh the amount of species getting extinct or when we see like water being affect and and and all the H sustaining that is probably not good enough and so

We need to look at how can we help to restore um what used to be there and to to create not because of the sake that’s what it needs to be what it was but because of we want a planetary health and and that’s what we all need to

Survive not just the species that might be extinct but even humans could potentially be extinct if we don’t regenerate so that’s why I think regeneration helps to to get us to that also that place of action and a certain level of urgency that we need to have I

See so whilst we acknowledged the certain sort of level of uh urgency um because of the nature of the interdependence or interconnectedness of the uh living system the nature not as an environment um it’s quite difficult to intervene but still the intervention has to be made in

Order to regenerate it so while on one hand we are talking about protection and conservation of the nature we are at the same time are trying to uh come up with better ways of the intervention is that the clear statement to say is a fair say

Fair fair yeah improve what you do to but also maybe do more so there’s this really great and that came from um I don’t know if it was Kate rayworth or Janine benus the um uh the founder of the bicr but basically it was uh that that sort

Of three mindsets from what can I get away with uh so people don’t notice that I’m doing potentially harm here which is maybe what still a lot of companies still function in that kind of way of thinking about it to how can I reduce the harm or the damage which is probably

Again a lot of companies would be still in that my frame of mind and possibly individuals as well to the last one is how can I do good and actually regenerate and I think that’s that’s another way of looking at it and that that’s probably the one we need to look

At so not just maybe slightly improve what we’re doing here but how can we do extra to um and there there great examples from the built environment on uh buildings being uh developed designed that actually are nature positive meaning that they provide um ecosystem services like naturewood like capture

Carbon um uh purify water um you know sequester yes so purify so so there’s all these sorts of nature services that we can actually design in in our infrastructure um and yeah so they are great examples to show that that that we can actually regenerate even with the normal everyday things like building

Streets Etc I see uh on the other hand nevertheless maybe um we don’t know exactly what how we were intervening the the nature therefore the end result is not always the thing that we expect to see so if that’s the case it’s quite difficult for

Us to come up with some kind of design principles or some kind of design at well attitude yes maybe but design principles design methods and design tools it seems quite uh difficult or sometimes even like a contradictory to come up with those things but how would

You respond to the idea such the em I you know emergence versus the systematic sort of intervention into the uncertain thank you very much for the question but uh can I add one one thing more about the yeah uh systemic uh way of observation since that you know uh

Recently as you may know that it’s there’s a legendary book limit to glow from 50 years ago about and that was a kind of quite uh quite the beginning of the movement of ecology but uh within that book actually recently I got the original copy of that

Book and you can buy in the street actually the copy currently but uh actually in that book there is a model world world three and that is uh that is a kind of interated interlet system of how the economy works and because of such uh such connection uh they predict that limit will

Come uh and uh behind of that system I mean that behind of drawing that map actually there was a kind of the methodology to modeling such system which is called System Dynamics uh I mean that yeah which is about 50 years ago but yeah I often find

That actually we already have many of the tool to understand the current situation but we often forgot uh so actually this problem is not started from now now but it’s already we keep fighting 50 years more than that actually uh but you know it’s sometimes it’s ignored uh sometimes it’s

Kind of opposed but currently many of conclusion or many of the facts shows that we really need to face this problem so actually we may need to find out what kind of tool we have uh already and also that uh there are many of legendary scientists or great ancestors uh who are approaching

In many ways uh like d d d medow or yeah the Jeffer did uh with System Dynamics as well but not only System Dynamics but many many way like for example uh the word ecology uh is from Arco uh who is about 150 years ago uh

But but yeah yeah we are we are kind of continuing tackle of this problem I think can can I just add one more thing um which I think would help a lot with with that sort of questions um so the um uh often when what we uh compare is uh a

Closed loop model versus the you know the more regenerative sort of model and the the living systems perspective and when you when you think about also how businesses approach it um and what we encourage them to do is actually not just look at it from a very mechanistic

Perspective because you could say if I’m um I don’t know apple and iPhone producer that I close the loop and this is where this closing the loop comes in but it’s an it’s still sort of linear that I just collect all the Apple phones back and make new Apple phones right and

So and then you can say job done there’s no waste produced and all of that in some way you could say yeah but then you know when you look at in nature like an owl that is is dying and diseasing is not becoming a new owl right and if you

Have like and and when you look at the creation of soil and what goes into making compost to grow new food a lot goes in for a lot of different things to come out it’s not just one thing that cycles and the same I think is is something that and there are Concepts

Coming from industrial ecology where that is being seen already in kinberg and Denmark where um the what comes out of one com uh in terms of output or waste can be used by another one and so there is this sort of again I’m using the symbiotic relationship but there’s something

Around that that that is not closed loop and that is uh actually allowing for the community of different players in this sort of system sort of field of of action to work together to collaborate and to move together because it wouldn’t work just for one or two businesses to

Say we are now 100% circular it would never work so this is why that linear circular model would not work that mechanistic model sorry I just had to add that no no that’s great thank you I mean the uh I think the issue is more or

Less like a to um in this context the um multi-stakeholder Network or meshwork development which is super difficult and the those design methods and principles uh to achieve that and that it itself is quite difficult so everyone knows it but not so sure about how to implement it or

The who the actual agents of change are and so on and so forth so um we maybe know how to deal with it but you know they have to actually implement it is the is the maybe the issue we we need to face uh for the uh session after the break so

Uh yeah it’s it’s about time isn’t it so we’ll have a break for uh roughly for half an hour and we’ll uh resume the session from 4:00 thank [Applause] You So A Right um welcome back to the second half of the um world design assembly uh Tokyo 2023 uh session uh planet yes it’s a long phrase to say in wo but anyway uh from this session onwards uh we’d like to have a maranon who was on stage this morning and first and foremost uh

Together with Marans I’d like to uh reflect a little bit about the the session we’ve just had um it seems to me that the previous session the three presentations were focused on the transition from how we design for making profit for a small minority of groups to

How we make a mutual benef benefit for a larger number of communities Society or maybe uh transitioning towards even larger scope to the design for um symbiosis of the uh nature and natural and the built environment maybe but as we try and expand the scope of Designing further and further out the existing

Knowledge of the uh design tools and methods uh cannot sort of cope with that therefore you need to go back and look at the the or origin of the ecological ecology or ecological design which has been around for many years but but they are not actively used for many reasons

As as we already discussed so um whilst we we all acknowledge the uh the necessity the urgency of Designing for planet on one hand on the other other hand it we know that it’s not the really easy task uh because of the uh balancing all the say multi-stakeholder um equium as it were

But H how how how would you respond uh to the uh the presentations and the kind of arguments we we’ve had uh so far well um first um what an amazing session and and uh really I want to thank you as a three of you for giving

Us so uh many tools uh so many insights on how design can act for the planet and as you were saying um now um we are at a stage where we need to scale up you know Solutions we need to really have impact at a large scale uh to address uh the

Pressing environmental issues uh and um really I think this session showed us how creativity can be essential in finding innovative ways of engaging communities companies and you know uh territories uh at large so we are not only in the field of product design we are in the field of design mining

Societies and um it’s really absolutely fantastic on how isuk showed us uh Innovative tools to address the issue of resilience because you know we saw this uh climate is a global issue but have various and very diverse local impact so meaning that each Community will have to address these um issues

Differently uh and isuk came with Incredible tools because also he made these tools um available I mean at the um uh level of reach and understanding of people meaning that he actually applied the skills of a designer you know who thinks about the user about the stakeholders

Uh and how these tools um can be actually implemented tangibly you know so how ideas concept can be really uh translated into action that will have an impact positive impact for the residence of communities so it’s it was an incredible uh demonstration and uh and I think also um

Dita uh really spoke about the create creativity uh the role of creative Industries uh in uh change in Awareness change and solutions well actually you know designers are part of these creative Industries meaning that also they impact our culture they impact our values and they can communicate very

Effectively uh you know to people um in an inspiring way so that’s actually uh um uh very very important uh concept because um we um can see that climate is usually thought about uh in terms of science policy economics uh and culture and creativity are not

Necessarily uh uh up in the agenda and you know D showed us how uh in community uh in the south people can be empowered with creative tools and cultural uh tools um and of course um Monica uh also talked about the importance of mobilizing uh large companies uh and how leadership you know

Um can actually uh scale up also uh the circular um uh transformation of companies industry and uh that have you know also large impacts uh whether it’s positive but it can be also uh you know negative so it’s it’s also a huge huge uh Challenge and uh the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and

Monica are doing an incredible job so I think it was really an enlight enlightening uh session good thank you um what I liked about uh first and foremost um about Monica monik son’s presentation was the fact that yes we know about linear to Circular first and foremost closing the

Loop was one design strategies that we can we know but the Monica son says explicitly that it’s not the only way to deal with the circular economy we have to slow down and we have to narrow down the amount of the uh Goods that are circulating and uh she mentioned

Something uh new today which is about in the loop different Loops like a world poool so um that I think is quite interesting because that related to what uh Dita son said about the rise of the small to mediumsized um Enterprise intervening this um creative cult cultural um

Activities because uh dealing with this uh multiple well pools or voltex uh circles whatever it is interconnected uh interwoven of uh Loops um it’s not quite easy for a major companies to collaborate I imagine but rather than that uh it makes better sense if it it’s the um collaborations between the um

Numerous uh informal sectors especially the small to uh small medium Enterprises smes so um connecting the loops a great idea uh and if you want to become if you want to develop this kind of some kind of emergent uh networks of the stakeholders then the it is the

Responsibility or it is the uh Advantage for the uh the nations in the global house to deal with it maybe because uh because of the numbers of the smes so that that was the kind of interesting sort of insight I came up with but at um

At the end of this session we need to uh come up with some takeaways ah you are the moderator I’m moderator the next session you need to go to sum up all the findings so towards that kind of I a and objectives we’d like to sort of somehow

Narrow down the uh you know interesting findings and so on and so forth but how would you respond to the um find you know insights and Inspirations and things uh you found so far well what I think um in terms of some of the principles maybe that came through but

We didn’t explicitly name all the time but I think one of them is um the bringing diverse actors together and and that uh that symbiosis or that that sort of um how does that create a more powerful mix to all benefit right so and uh having these mutal beneficial

Relationships which again is an inspiration from nature and we see that already happening even in the corporate world where it might where you think it might be harder because it’s more elbow mentality in competition but even there you even see competitors uh collaborate on certain themes because they know it’s

Better for them so Coca-Cola and Pepsi collaborate maybe on certain standardization or certain kind of campaigns because they know if we do it together we actually both benefit from it and um or uh a chemistry company with a battery producing company with somebody else or so there there are lots

Of examples and I think but you can also see that with um uh different size companies from large corporate to small medium Enterprises to like uh policy makers and for example the um in the Plastics team they they work on reuse and refill right now um and uh work with

Uh looking at how we can actually for the entire industry create that new infrastructure so reuse and refill is actually possible um and so talking about you know what are the sort of possibly maybe similar to genes redesign but what are the sort of criteria that

Needs to be in place what are the sort of um kind of the the obstacles we need to overcome and uh so all of that is possible and I think and there’s something that I think combines the the three conversations in that isn’t it yeah seems that way to me if you’d like

To add yeah I’d like to take the angle of the context again because uh what I presented is mostly of course my our point of view of Indonesia with 17,000 more Islands our challenge is always Logistics always so that’s why disparity is always there because you cannot distribute equal Services basic Services

Education Health whatever else um so yeah that has become Our concern so that’s why what is presented uh those images you saw they are actually Solutions but at local level or prototypes and as you can see that’s what designers do offer for prototypes of solutions but then from Prototype all

Designers know to go to production takes a lot of effort and uh commitments and that’s what we don’t have so actually uh Cons considering Planet uh we have Solutions we have uh examples that work but then in order to make them uh scaling up as you say uh so people can

Also uh practice uh within their own uh area takes um many things not on money but also commitment of the local leaders and so on um and that’s hard to get because most of the time political uh interest come in um Capital interest coming in and so on while at the global

South our biggest capital is social capital so uh that’s what we should actually put attention to so how we can uh include this uh cars of um informal economy into a bigger locomotive and so on uh how we can direct uh that’s why Indonesia has this policy of decentralization instead of everything

Centralized we turn to decentralized so everybody can take care of their own uh circular um area because they are islands anyway and we really felt this during the pandemic where all borders are closed so you have to make do with what you have in your environment and it

Or not that is not always uh easy is is uh actually difficult so that’s why uh words like integration Synergy collaboration we have to see the whole thing as an ecosystem of uh production of design for the better I came up kind of two of the concept uh along with this conversation

Uh one is that uh as Monica have said uh that you know uh if we connect two of the war pools together then and we need to doubt the predetermined value of the product or the waste since that waste is because there’s no meaning predetermined meaning like for example afterward uh

Afterward this will be meaningless uh because it’s already uh after after I Dr after I drank the water then it’s meaningless because the carry of the carrying the water is this purpose but if we can find the other purpose like for example music musical instrument or the other then it can have prolonged

Life or in some place that there is kind of next uh next adapted situation but we often uh forgot or we often kind of ignore such chance but just throwing away so so often I feel that the C econ economy is about creativity to refine

The purposes and that is I I think the all the designers role since that we are we are setting the purpose to the object usually so we can of course set the purpose to the waste as well uh so one thing I came up is that and the other

Thing I came up from tian’s tian’s talk is that you know uh I reminded that you I remind me that reminded that you often uh adaptive Evolution uh can happen in Ireland uh because they need to to isolate it in rep isolated in reproduction uh if they evolve in uh in

Each they they that speciation will occurs then the such isolation of reproduction needed uh but as well that you know uh such remote island uh of course need to be saturated inside in many many things like of course water or waste or energy so in that case you know

Currently Indonesia is quite growing fast and as well the population is so big already uh so because of that that you know you need to uh you need to kind of develop the industry as well but such industry can be circular industry since that that is quite appropriate to

Solving the its own own local Solutions so that is kind of amazing that you know uh we can kind of try to calculate uh the impact of uh for example if you construct usual uh infrastructure in the modern city way then it can be very very expensive but you know if it’s

Circulated then uh then it can be reduced as well that you may have a chance or Indonesian company may have the chance sure uh to develop the new industry just um just another perspective because if you are coming up around um diversity or around uh uh

Looking at a local scale and what can be done within community and um and uh there’s uh well just a sort of a story to demonstrate that you know how this is actually spreading this sort of awareness and maybe the recognition of its importance is when I um recently

Visited jagar Land Rover and their design studio and we we were presented with latest um efforts but be amazing things as well what they’re doing at the end we were given a book and that book uh is called the good ancestor and it was given to the design leaders from

Their chairman so that he was very inspired by that book and gave it to all the um the the senior leaders and um it’s bringing in the the that that future ancestor perspective and um and when I knew I came to Japan and I looked for interesting cas studies of what’s

Happening in Japan I actually found out that there is a group in Japan that is bringing that future voice into their um design work as well of actually acting out that future and having being this or you have that sometimes in a boardroom and a sort of decision making of having

You know one person represent the future and so there’s something in there of of uh bringing that perspective in before you start designing and and uh and if you work with particular clients or or you know the kind of Who You designed for they might have they might ask for

Certain things but what’s the role of the designer here to bring that perspective in if that perspective is missing for your client for example uh I like the philosophy from native Indian Seventh Generation exactly yeah uh that is about to talk actually there’s a ritual uh to talk with seven

Generations away from the past and from the future uh in the kind of the festival actually you need to talk uh with disguised the person who are seven generations away so in that case that you how how do think that you may you may react in quite different way like you may

Apologize uh yeah as a representative of this generation and as well that you may kind of thank uh to the inheritance of the land uh so that is a you know that is a kind of very small trick of how we can expand our perceptive P perceptivity

Since that we our perceptivity is quite limited to the next person and tomorrow or today uh but yeah you know we may be able to uh set such kind of new design in Behavior Uh to realize more intimate for such uh such far away Generations or broader sense of the area quite

Interesting because um some of my friends uh the graduates from the Royal College of Art are working specifically on that for a uh uh for our sustainable future basically so in the context of circular economy or circular design or design for transition um the Anna Jane from superlux uh to be

Specific she’s working on the a design called unly design which basically uses this future scenario to uh for the people to imagine or reimagine the present and the possible future therefore backcasting to uh redefine our preferable future um of course it’s a prototype uh it’s never the fixed solution so it’s a

The starting point to reimagine the what the regener future might look like so um I think it’s quite important to to that end to not to think about the um user um up until now or up not now but the you know when this human Center design do uh logic was quite dominant

Everyone was talking about second order understanding I.E designers needs to understand what users are understanding but now we need to go beyond that uh we need to understand how the ancestors uh interacted with the nature or how we will interact in the future uh just like a um you know this

Morning’s presentation which is like a three Century it’s quite in a far future but still um to to be able to do that I think we need a special uh mindset capability creativity to doal with those things and of course it’s not just about the um roles and responsibility of the

Designers it’s also the um the participants everyone’s capability to reimagine that as you may already use chat GPT or the other AI services but uh recently I realized that they can disguise anyone uh for example if you ask them uh yeah now you are the scholar

Uh famous scholar so you need to write down the paper then they will disguise that and my yeah I think that it may be possible for them I mean AI to disguise Seven Generations away I mean from ancestors point of view yeah yeah so such kind of yeah such kind of uh yeah

Some artificial in a way intelligence who are representing the generations away then it can be the interface to understand more easily uh or also that you can literally talk with them uh such kind of solution can be really really easily uh acquirable currently because of current

Technology I see I see anything you want to add well just maybe just um what you were saying uh made me think of empathy which was mentioned and empathy made me think also of the importance of nature connection yeah and uh we we heard that yesterday uh in um in a presentation

Around uh which which was also bringing in the idea of biomimicry and uh and connecting to a place and the environment in a way that um yeah brings about new insights and new ways of relating and seeing things that actually is quite important and and we do that as

An initial step of the the Sprint processes we’ve done with the seych designers before we go into the design journey to help um uh bring about that mindset change at the beginning of the process from which you design an in a different way and um and I think there’s

Something around uh these sorts of nature connection practices that help us stay grounded stay connected and and also ultimately maybe even stay connected to the bigger purpose and the ancestors so there there’s a lot of benefits plus it’s also that personal balance and centered and kind of not

Just the personal well-being but also like okay what’s the bigger picture here that we are trying to design for that we can be in service of and this this is an emerging process as well of what’s coming actually you might you know you might come into the process already

Having an idea but maybe you shouldn’t be too much um stuck in that sort of mindset and the growth mindset maybe as well is to be open to what’s emerging from the group from the outside uh that you you know the kind of impulses you get from the people that you’re

Interacting with or the environment beyond the human beings you’re interacting with I see I see so what does that mean um designing for profit designing for Mutual benefit design for symbiosis and so on and so forth you know growing growing first and foremost what we have

To think about is how we design our redefined worldview is that the fair thing to say yeah it’s referring now to the design council’s work on um their systemic design framework that I’m sorry I have to say again that they developed but it’s um they um because the chief design officer

Was on our last Sprint and this was a conversation of value creation and and uh the values are hugely important as a sort of very first step in the design process and it determines everything so if you actually don’t address that you don’t maybe get on a the sort of

Conversation and plain level field of where are we at what is the if you leave that entirely out everybody designs from a different value set and might not it doesn’t it’s not maybe as purposeful as it could be to to design for the greater good of what’s needed Beyond just my own

Perception that moment right right what I would like to add is not only the uh not only the perspective uh renewed perspective but also we may be able to invent a lens of viewing the society like you know for example Seven Generations uh ritual also uh kind of the perspective

Which was invented and that is kind of design I think and also for example circular economy the concept also is designed in a way uh so with such concept we can kind of uh intangible and difficult problem easier to understand that is about lens uh to to focusing on

Uh current situation and of course the every interconnected network is so complex so we don’t have to deal with in a way whole picture but you can you can get if some some quite uh critical lens uh to to perve one even one part then that is getting better and yeah keep continuing

Inventing such lands is very important I think speculative spectacles interesting is that it uh but yeah difficulty this one interes yeah interesting but spectacles is really British term to glasses maybe but anyway um H so yes we need a world view alternative worldview PIV veral maybe uh if we you

Know site in quote and respect the works of the AL escoba but the um the World Views are also um described as a key factors in redesigning our possible Futures by the Anthony dun and F rabi on one hand on the other hand it’s one of

The uh key Concepts in the uh transition design coined by the K melon University design department so it’s it’s a really a fair thing to say that you know we kind of agree on the the world view as one one thing we have to do now at the

Same time we need to come up with a tool if as long as the um the preferable future needs to be designed somehow we need some kind of tool but the uh the speculative design is quite often um expert l so we need we might more we might want

To have more somewhat democratized autonomous or maybe like even like a everybody designs kind of stuff but the um how how would you respond to this redesigning of the the speculative spectacles what I what I call speculative spectacles that’s a title for the next seminar um yeah what I think about it is

How uh we teach design now because preparing designer for the future with old tools won’t work and we have to make sure that the way to design uh that we are delivering to this young younger generation um makes it possible for them to produce something that is always

Relevant so that’s why the empathy should be used for the sensitivity to detect the needs and the future needs and also uh to not leave anyone behind it’s not just a slogan because um well who will think about AI or Internet if every day you have no electricity in a

Stable mode so sometimes oh Po’s out and then the next day you have it on so you have to look into it in a different design way we you can still use the design methods or anything to solve that but then you you have to uh make do with

Uh again the context that you are where you are uh Indonesia uh last year was the oh no this year uh helped the president idency for asan Summit so in uh asan countries um well when we formed the asan uh the P was about to talk about economy uh security and culture

But then it’s always about the security and economy never the culture so uh we are trying to boost this side because you cannot live just with the money and with the security of course needed but then you also need to enhance what you have uh that you are proud of because it’s you

Nice nice quite nice thank you yeah um well I mean um also bouncing back on on uh on the the discussion um I think it’s really really important for designers to change the narrative from a doom and gloom to a positive um you know beneficial uh narrative so what people

Will gain also from this change out U um of uh you know ex um avoiding disasters because we are seeing that this Doom and Gloom narrative doesn’t work it’s actually provoke an inconscious response of avoidance and um it’s actually very important to address this because if we

Ignore it and we continue to have this 80% Doom and Gloom narrative on climate change and envir mental crisis then the human factor as we call it might be the biggest impediment to change and to address the crisis effectively and designers can really change the way

People perceive you know um the uh the transformation towards a sustainable Society great um we have approximately five minutes left and I think we now it’s the time to have a Q&A if yeah first of all thank you very much for your presentations very very interesting and thank you very much

Marian for this morning has been really really interesting as well um my question is uh you as as experts and and leaders we can say in that matter how you envision the potential future of the manufacturing no thinking in Goods uh is going to decrease because uh you has been talking about U

Craftsmanship increase repair Monica you has been talking about U the iPhones that if they come back this is not really circular you need probably to repair and my question is you as expert or leaders how do you envision which is your vision of the future your opinion

About that do you think we need to decrease and then generate income in other services we are going to spread what we are doing from one place too many places what do you think great question autonomous distributed decentralized or just simply the reduction of manufacturing for the goods or how how do you

Foresee I agree with that uh the distance is uh really really the problem to to make it closer and so decentralized is really important that if it’s centralized the distance for the Lo logistic will cost a lot uh and as well that the cular economy redu the

Reduced the material from the out out side uh so if yeah if saturated properly on site then uh then the yeah so I I believe that yeah of course we keep in a way producing something uh because our population is growing uh but we need to properly

Reinvent uh in distance closer and more saturated that and also we need to be creative to reuse and uh yeah reuse and Recycling and many of such such a way to devop it within the industrial context because we are now say industry Revolution 4.0 but we’re still living with 1.0 as well

So the answer would be again make it relevant where you can put the 4.0 where things are there so not forcing it to be all 4.0 because it’s not possible but also that what we need especially in the global South again what we need is maybe more like the transfer of technology so

We can uh um uh produce or we can operate our materials better with materials that are not harming because what we know from the 1.0 2.0 3.0 um we use the materials and processes that might be uh harmful but now I think the the important thing is to find a

Solution for of substances and processes that is much and much uh less harmful or maybe very safe that do depend on the context again thank you if you likeed it out there anything well I mean I I don’t I don’t think that is the answer answer and like

A standardized I think there needs to be a very contextual sort of approach to and um they there is I wanted to refer to a resource that might be helpful so we um at some point um the foundation created a circular design guide and as part of that there are six um design

Strategies mentioned uh such as design for modularity or um uh product as a service or design at waste or I’m not going through all of them now but basically there there are a couple of um Inspirations there let’s put it and I think there’s a lot more room for others

And we um we also mentioned sort of Inspirations from um nature but I think yeah that that would be maybe one to look at and and I suppose be just be yeah always start with the value at the beginning of what what the purpose is so it’s it’s it’s very

Contextual um to summarize I think the research and development in circular product design has been um great but it’s so systematic that you need to be really careful when you are trying to implement those uh design strategies or design principles uh like I do inan kept talking um it needs to be highly

Contextualized otherwise you can’t just simply you know put some of the design principles and put in in the manufacturing processes and say oh this is great I’m now becoming circular that’s not the case it’s not going to work I mean maybe you are not even reducing this ghg emissions

So I um I think it’s really important for anyone who’s trying to develop a a circular manufacturing business models to uh carefully identify the key um design strategies to uh make it your own does that make sense yes okay good uh we have one minute left uh final words maybe

Maranon yes well I mean I just would just like uh to uh finish this this discussion by saying that in Europe um you know we have um um very um new and Innovative legislation coming in Forth uh that will actually push uh the companies to report on their impacts on

Climate adaptation climate mitigation circular economy biodiversity and um actually this might uh have a really uh accelerating uh effect on the transformation of the economy um and also on the simplification of the value chain because if you look at all the data that companies will need to collect to

Calculate this impact uh in a globalized economy that’s going to be a huge huge um uh you know work uh so um you know we things will move um but uh difficult to predict exactly um you know uh how it will impact the rest of the world as

Well we can’t predict the future but we can still anticipate it I think that’s that’s the right way of put it so thank you very much for all the panelists uh with the Applause we wouldd like to close this uh session thank you very [Applause] Much
