Today we are finding the differences between off-the-shelf mountain bikes and that of a World Cup professional. Rich Payne is joined by Vid Persak in the Orbea FOX Enduro Team pits of Les Gets, France to compare Vid’s Enduro World Series bike against the stock equivalent you can buy in a bike shop.

When you see the top end of pro sports you see the glitz you see the Glam and you see the real fancy equipment and it kind of leaves you wishing that you could maybe get your hands on some of it take motorsport for example you’d love
An F1 or a WRC car but let’s face it we ain’t never going to get one but when it comes to mountain biking I reckon you can actually get pretty close but just how close how similar are a normal person’s bike to a Pros bike well I’m going to find Out To find out then just how different a Pro bike is from its stock counterpart I’m going to head into the UCI Mountain Bike World Series Festival in the Hotes ofir and I’m going to corner a few pros and just find out what’s going on how different can they Be so just how different are pro bikes to Average Joe bikes where to find out I’ve cornered vid persac of the OA Fox and Juro team to try and find out just how different this bike is to maybe the one that you buy off the shelf vid
Thanks for joining me mate good to see you again yeah good to see you again too um yeah we’re going to go through and see what’s new yeah it’s been a while bud so let’s start with the frame you’re on a size yeah I’m on a size large so
Went from medium last year the start of season back to large and just uh stay with large for all season now okay and is this a completely stock large frame no different front ends back ends linkage anything like that well the frame is uh the one you you can buy in
The shop so you’re going to get the same thing back in shops so this is exactly this exactly the same frame as what I ride cuz I ride a large as well yeah yeah that’s why I ride so good oh man he’s sweet talking already okay so that’s really interesting that actually
This bike is from a frame completely stock what about though the rear shock any kind of special treatment going on there I mean it’s a float extra too which anyone can buy but surely the internals got to be different right yeah if I’m if I’m right the stock bikes come
With a medium tuning or light tuning and this one has a extra light tuning on the rear shock which makes it pretty Supple and like just nice to ride and good grip and is that something that you do offseason with Fox yeah I’ve done this stuff uh preseason and I just stick to
This uh new shock it’s actually 24 shock and 24 Fork so uh we did some updates and we try a few things but yeah mostly to make it the best for my writing style right right I mean that’s something that’s going to differ massively from
What most people are going to be able to do a lot of people can get their forks and shocks tuned but actually spending time with forks ain’t going to happen I think like um like don’t get um too crazy because it’s new stuff but that’s stuff that you’re going to write next
Year so we we try and maybe sometimes it’s not better or worse you know like but we try and see um how it works and then you only get the best next year when we ride okay so we’re kind of a year behind then in that sense and you
Said you did the same with the forks those are tuned up by Fox as well that’s right it’s the same 24 cartrige insight and yeah just um I tried to get my best setup on this one and all right okay I like it so moving on I mean we’ve got a
Full Shimano group set XTR all rounds that’s a a pretty stock affair right uh yeah just the maybe the derailer it’s on the short cage as well um is that something you’ve changed yourself to make it a short cage yeah just to avoid problema with like smashing in the rocks
Or anything like just to be safer through the race all right I like it now obviously XTR braks but here’s where it looks like it gets a little bit interesting so Gala rotors but we’ve actually gone smaller at the front and larger at the rear now that’s something
The stock bike definitely doesn’t come with because I know that on the stock I think it’s 200 up front and a 180 RAR so you’ve actually reversed it yeah just um there obviously so powerful that you don’t need to go for a big rouer um so
Yeah I like the small r because it gives me less power you know do if this makes any sense like less bite like sort of less like B yeah less less maybe clutch but um yeah and then all the power in the back which is all good with two Z
White disc which means when it heats up it doesn’t Bend so much and it keeps the line and keeps a consistent feeling on the liver as well all right so actually let’s sort of halt there because I noticed that obviously on these rotors it does say for test only however these
Rotors are now available so it kind of Loops back to what you said earlier how we’re you guys are like a year ahead if you like and it’s a 2 mil thick rotor on the back and a 1.8 I think you said on the front and and why was that again
Well this is just because in the rear they heat up a bit more usually and just to keep the like to always keep it straight you know so it doesn’t change the feeling on the on the lever as well I mean I think we can all admit that’s definitely something that that the
Average Rider would probably not think about or Overlook there for sure I mean unless they’re very nerdy which I know you guys out in Tech land definitely can be but that’s that’s pretty cool to know so let’s let’s move on to the wheels these are oras of In-House brand OKO
Wheels carbon or aluminium uh they’re aluminium wheels and uh like I did we did lot lots of testing preseason on those no wheels wheels because this was obviously a big change we had coming into this season and yeah um what we did to the stock wheels or we try different
Spoke tension to see what works best for this bike and uh end up on a bit softer side especially on the re wheel so so you’re so you’re actually running less tension in the spokes for a little more flex and compliance it is less less
Tension but you need to think of two two ways because uh like compliance can be vertical compliance and can be lateral compliance but we were mostly looking for the lateral compliance so we get a bit better grip you know bit better off camber stuff um and that this was the
Way that we wanted to go and um yeah obviously with less tension um it’s easier to damage a wheel you know because they they move more but um like we try to push the limit here and we try to make the most out of material maybe not mostly recommended for a normal user
But when he get when he gets down to through racing you’re trying to look for a margin like 100% millisecs count right and uh I mean I know that’s sort of something that I or most of my friends say wouldn’t do we wouldn’t be slacking
In our spokes to a point to get a little more a little more Flex in there because I think we’d all be killing Wheels with uh the worry of having to pay for new on whereas I guess luckily being on a a pro team you don’t have to do that yeah but
I’ve been sorry to but yeah I’ve been trying to like trying the stock wheel and this wheel to race and just to ride back home I like stock wheel obviously because there was no issues you know it was reliable and you could ride one or two months no problem with it so but
Yeah when it comes to here maybe you try to to go a little bit more in the details and like get somewhere nice man okay interesting I mean otherwise all looks pretty stock we got Crank Brothers pedals we’ve got bar and stem I noticed you’ve got your stem jacked up pretty
High up there an extra spacer under the front is that just for for comfort that ride position that you like yeah just uh the way I had like last year so I tried to get the same say distance um and yeah I when it comes to to Peds I like to
Those are new from last week and every time I put the new ones on uh I like to see I like to put the shoe on and see if it wraps into those uh pins oh yeah and I always go maybe one turn in so just so
It’s easy to to put it in you know oh like more float more flow yeah okay awesome awesome it’s good for someone that gets gets into it and try you know it can be easy to go pins can be easily up too high and then they will get like
A bit harder to get in and out okay okay so I mean stock but just sort of pro setup tips there as well vid awesome thank you sort of for showing me through your bike and I mean it’s dissimilar from a stock bike but at the same time
It’s massively similar you know someone with enough time in a few quids should we say could make their bike the same as this I could make mine the same as yours almost oh yeah sure like there is nothing there is no secrets here so it’s always up it comes down to the personal
Preferences but yeah this is my my way to go all man thank you very much for showing us your bike vid absolute pleasure no worries good to have you back Eh so then our Pro bike’s vastly different from our own well if you were to check out vids and a lot of the other Pros in the pits here I’d say actually not however the setup definitely is they just have the resources and the time to make those bikes work absolutely
Perfectly having said that that’s not to say there are definitely pro bikes out there that are vastly unobtainable for the lot of us but we’ll try and check those out in the future so if you like this video and you want to see a little bit more let me know in the comments
Down below or do you ride a bike that maybe was a Pros or is really similar to a Pros in itself I’m out of here from France for now thanks for watching

Thanks for the vid, very interesting, big fan of the team. But guys please, upgrade you camera equipment and post your videos in 4K. Because filming is good, but not the quality of the video on youtube.
1:20 L size bike ? How tall is that guy ?
Wheels- almost always custom built. Depending on sponsorship, you'll find some re-painted hubs.
Suspension- always custom tuned, sometimes prototype, occasionally disguised.
Brakes and drivetrain- surprisingly stock, but sometimes prototype. Sponsorship dependent.
You can buy a top shelf new bike and race it in Pro classes, for sure.
the bike is 10%, the other 90% is whos riding it
More!
Screw F-1! 🤢🤮😆
I'll take a WRC and a MotoGP bike!
Radon JAB 10.0 HD from 2018 with changed back wheel to dt swiss e 1900
Awesome video!
pro bikes are worse as they are restricted by sponsorship as to what parts they can use
Pro bikes are usually heavier, with stiffer suspension setup!
Rich cheers mate was interesting listening to you talking with Vid the way his bike was set up.Nice set of wheels.
Loosening the spokes to get more lateral grip. That is a pro tip that nobody would have thought of, but makes sense when you hear it. I think I'll skip that though.
#Askgmbn I’m confused, is Fox float and factory forks the same thing? I can’t find any oil charts for my 34 Factory, only Float charts.
If you ride a modern bike like 2023 it’s loads better then a pros bike from the early 2000’s or 90’s so in a way even a new Walmart bike is better then a pros bike from the 90’s
wow"very nice mountain bike,, this is my dream dream dream mountain
More like this Rich. 🙂
I just want a bike that makes me FEEL like I ride like a PRO.
I enjoyed this — please do a few more….XC in particular
I think with any sport you can get your hands on the pro stuff, even F1 and NASCAR (if you were a billionaire).
