Marie Schoelmerich has been an Assistant Professor of Environmental Microbiology (Tenure Track) at the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics at ETH Zurich since August 2023.

Marie deals with biochemical and bioenergetic questions relating to anaerobic bacteria that use ancient metabolic pathways. The main research focus of her group will be on anaerobic microorganisms which play a key role in the CO2 and CH4 cycle.

Marie Schoelmerich was a junior group leader at Hamburg University, Germany, and later went on to become a Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley, USA. Her appointment will ideally complement interdisciplinary research within the department, as well as strengthen links with the Department of Biology and the Department of Health Sciences and Technology. Welcome, Marie!

I studied biochemistry at liik University and then pursued my master and doctoral studies at Frankfurt University I then became a junior group leader at Hamburg University and after 2 and a half years joined UC Berkeley as a postto as of August in 2023 I joined D uses as an assistant professor of environmental

Microbiology our research area is anerobic microbiology so most m microorganisms live in the absence of oxygen for example in gastrointestinal tracts but also in soils and sediments and human made systems for example biog gas plants and landfills we want to understand what are those microorganisms in these

Systems and what are they doing and how are they changing the cycling of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane in the environmental microbiology group we will bridge metagenomics and computational approaches with wet lab experiments we we want to understand what are the microorganisms doing in anoxic ecosystems with a particular focus on

Wetlands and Pet Land furthermore we want to find new drivers that are involved in the cycling of the greenhouse gases methane and CO2
