BICYCLE TOURING THE NETHERLANDS: THE NORTH – PART 1 DRENTHE & GRONINGEN

Early May 2021 I did a small bicycle tour in the North of the Netherlands. This is a part of the Netherlands that I do not know that well. So indeed a small adventure in my own country during Covid times.

This video is about the very WINDY first day where I rode 145 km from IJhorst to Delfzijl.

Enjoy !

Absolutely stunning tulips welcome to hollands Hello so here we are in the netherlands and yes i’m on another bike tour yeah mid-size one this time four days three nights in the north of netherlands so province of groningen island and then where i live it is may 5th normally if nice spring weather right now it’s 7 degrees celsius

Some rain some showers but still i’m gonna enjoy myself i’m gonna ride in this northern region of the netherlands that i do not really know very well see you later how do So today actually we’re quite lucky or i am quite lucky because we have a strong western wind and yeah for the most part of my trip today i’m going in the eastern direction towards the border with germany at newest house and so until winter for the biggest part of the

Day and then the last 15 20 kilometers it’s back uh north west again so that’s they’ll have some headwinds uh yeah so since the predictions were not that good weather-wise for these days i decided not to go camping hence also the uh the saddleback setup i am on my touring

Bikes another my motorbike so i have this uh handlebar back and just a pretty fully uh pretty fully stuffed uh saddlebags also hardly so spending the night in the hotel b and is whatever i can find uh yeah and then tomorrow i’m going more westwards towards fishland anyhow let’s enjoy

Today first welcome to the netherlands flat and green gray some blue something Some showers I’m actually pretty happy that i brought my full winter skip on this trip right now raining and 60 degrees brought my uh my winter shoots and then of course my long long cycle Your sexism fire our national flank are waving out there and you can see a lot more uh today because today is perforating stuff liberation day the fifth of the fifth of may is And it started raining again suddenly i see this uh hill appearing in this uh overall flat landscape and then i realized that this is the gold an actual climb within the apartment and in fact the 2020 road cycling national championship of the netherlands was held

In this area in reality it’s just a pile of waste but they put some I think i’m gonna try it there’s the top And i could just taste it Greatest i save you your sex is on fire [Applause] With what’s to transpire I see you your sex is on fire Transpired Mr burke villager Hmm Wow man we got actually uh actually we got some hills you can get shower and my hands are freezing because my gloves are not really winter gloves but now there’s a nice sunshine again oh look at mom still enjoying drinking for a moment honey So i think this is one of the biggest in the netherlands it’s a really big one in borja nice really nice farms over here also the sign over this is uh stats canal six kilometers and i believe south canal is in the province of groningen

So i thought it might be good to explain you what the government situation is right now in the netherlands so some restrictions have been lifted about two weeks ago so what is now possible is that bars and restaurants can have their terraces open during the day to serve

Food and drinks yeah so you cannot go inside to eat a drink normally you may that’s perfectly fine with this weather doesn’t help me that much uh also uh yeah the non-essential stores are open again for customers so that’s good but yeah i’m actually longing for a cup of coffee but

It’s not too tempting to go and sit outside there so that’s the situation right now and i say see you later on to cronin Hello Sideways at the moment I have never in my life been here before oh it’s a little bit special a place where you’ve never been there before in your life let’s find a spot out of the wind to grab a small bite to eat Really beautiful so i already told you about uh befriending stuff so liberation day which is today but always the day before liberation day on the 4th of may we actually have the remembrance of all the fallen soldiers and other other people who lost their lives during the second world war

And yeah i think yesterday they put on these flowers and they with the statue and they do that in every village in town of the whole of the netherlands but what you actually see is here a british and i think a polish flag as well but i think that is for our liberators For sure it’s a beautiful day to have your flag out perfectly Not much going on here but i like it Hello so here we are let’s see how far we are with time and kilometers 97.5 almost 100 320. it’s getting heavy and empty here and it’s getting emptier and emptier here this lens and that means we’re getting closer closer to the most northeastern corner of the netherlands northwest

Coaning my end goal for today is a town called delphi but first we’re gonna pass by nemuscans which is on the dutch german border and they’re actually a quite famous bicycle touring route in the netherlands starts it’s the cast part of a euroville as well yeah from

That point in new zealand you can cycle along the complete dutch coast all the way until zeyland there’s london this afternoon we cycle a small search of it and then tomorrow somewhat bigger stretch until we bend south again so until new zealand then cross into germany for a very short while

And then go towards the delft show how do see you later The foreign wind is now getting pretty strong almost a gale force that sometimes feels like beautiful mill man i just love not that easy I think again we’re pretty close to the german border effect yes i think we turn left over there and then we’re actually on the border let’s see so this must be netherlands still yeah i think this ditch is in fact the border and those farms over there are

Actually in germany we’re gonna cross over soon [Applause] right there Welcome in deutschland so we’re in germany now and yes windmills i think it’s about a four or five kilometers into the netherlands again so almost leaving germany again i’ve been afraid of the last uh 15 20 kilometers i think it’s going to be straight and the wind is pretty strong i don’t

Know if i mentioned it but anyhow let’s see huge man almost a little bit more than i had hmm caffeine okay let’s battle this wind let’s go so oh No more headwinds at the moment uh man that was really tough when you add the rain and the hill and oh man anyhow we made it i think i think it’s less than 10 kilometers to death so it will be some headline again but i think i’ll make it alive see you later

So that’s one big green time the wind’s still not going in the right direction seven kilometers to go entering they’ll show i made it it’s about 7 15 and man i’m hungry and tired but i made it the wind So It’s on a touring bike whatever how do

  1. Ik vind het een prestatie… 148 km met hagel en zo’n tegenwind. Maar achteraf was het toch vaak weer leuk, gek hè.
Leuk om weer een upload van je te mogen bewonderen. Kijk uit naar de volgende. Top.
