Situated in close proximity to the charming mountain village of Zermatt, renowned for its picturesque beauty and authentic Alpine architecture, the Matterhorn attracts not only climbers but also tourists from around the globe. Visitors admire the breathtaking scenery, relish the fresh mountain air, and engage in various outdoor activities.
The 4’478 m high Matterhorn in Zermatt was first ascended on July 14, 1865, by the Englishman Edward Whymper and his team. The Hörnli Route, starting from the Hörnli Hut at 3’260 m, is the classic ascent route, requiring experienced mountaineers.
Recommended: A hike from Schwarzsee at 2’583 m to the Hörnli Hütte at 3’260 m. The cable car from Zermatt takes you to the Schwarzsee mountain station at 2’583 m. The hike takes approximately two hours from there. The trail is only suitable for those without fear of heights, demanding surefootedness and proper equipment.
The Gornergrat cogwheel railway transports visitors from Zermatt to the Gornergrat at 3’135 m, providing an impressive view of more than 20 peaks, including the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and Liskamm.
Two different cable cars lead from Zermatt to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the highest mountain station in the Alps on the summit of Klein Matterhorn at 3’883 m. From here, you enjoy a panoramic view of 38 four-thousand-meter peaks, 14 glaciers, and 3 countries.
On the Klein Matterhorn, you’ll find the Glacier Palace, located 15 meters below the surface in the wide Theodul Glacier field between the Klein Matterhorn and the Breithorn. The Glacier Palace offers a fairy-tale world of sparkling ice crystals with walkable glacier crevasses, an ice slide, and various photo spots.
From the Zermatt Rothorn mountain at 3’103 m, with the intermediate station Sunnegga at 2’288 m, the Matterhorn presents itself in its most beautiful form. This view perfectly corresponds to the postcard motifs representing the Matterhorn and Zermatt in Switzerland worldwide.
Zermatt is a premier skiing destination in winter, with perfectly groomed slopes and top-notch ski lifts. In summer, the region entices with numerous hiking trails, mountain biking routes, and spectacular viewpoints.
