Into the darkness and it might be for some of you this morning there is a darkness that you know is happening in your life it’s it there’s something going on it could be relational it could be sin it could be uh family situations could be work but I just wonder if we
Might speak the name of Jesus into that Darkness right now just speak the name of Jesus we’re going to say it together but as as we say his name just picture in your mind what it is that you’re speaking his name over Jesus Jesus we speak your name over this
Darkness Jesus you are our Living Hope Jesus we speak your name because you bring light into the darkness you bring light in Jesus name thank you thank you Jesus thank you Jesus and as we step into this year we remind ourselves in the presence of Jesus of who we are and what we’re for that God has called us to be a people of Hope following Jesus giving ourselves away to see reom renewed and so we want to take this
Moment once again to pray for rexam the renewal of all things in rexam in fact the renewal of all things in Wales could I ask you to just stand in this moment if you’re able and maybe you face the windows around us and I’d love us to pray out together
Because we know that in culture today I think it’s about 99.5% of people that don’t go to church maybe they have a kind of underlying Faith but they’re not stepping into the walls of the family of God and we want to pray that this would be a this would
Be a year to come where we would see a spiritual awakening within Wales A Spiritual Awakening in reom we want to pray for for a renewal of your church in this land and so could we all if you’re happy maybe just stretch out your hands and let’s pray for God’s kingdom to come
In Wales that there would be a renewal of his church and a renewal of faith in this place so Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit come we recognize that every person uh that lives in this in in the UK on this world on this Earth is created by you for you with a purpose
And we speak that purpose into being and we speak a returning to you Jesus over Wales in this time lord we ask that there would be a new renewing of your church by the power of your spirit that every Church in rexam and in Wales would be refreshed refreshed and brought to
Life we pray that there would be new people walking through the doors in 2024 would come to find you and find the hope and salvation and love that you offer us in Christ Jesus we PR as Sharon did for any place of Darkness any place of Injustice any
Place of poverty we pray for your light and freedom and provision to come in jesus’ name and we once again Place ourselves in your hands we say that we are yours your people and we ask that you would use us Lord to bring about the extension of

Know if you’ve got a little moment of pause before jumping back into work um but as uh as Sharon said right at the beginning to reflect on the year that is passed and to also think about what is God calling you into in the year um 2024
Taking that moment to look back but also look forward and it might be that this is a brilliant opportunity to think how do I want to grow in my relationship with God this year how what patterns can we develop this year that would help me pursue Jesus closer and nearer and step
Into the fullness of life that he has offered and called us to and uh one way that to do that is actually finding ways to actually read the Bible to absorb it this is truth this is lifegiving it will change your life as we read the Bible
And a couple of helpful ways if you’re wanting to find a new Rhythm for you um I find Bible in one year really helpful it’s just an app on my phone I actually sometimes find it distracting having it on my phone but that tells me what to do
And then I can get out my paper Bible and uh read it but you might want to check that out download it on your phone it enables you to read either a shorter one or a a longer one but actually get through the majority of the Bible in one
Year um that’s really great or for something more kind of devot tional there’s also an app called lectio 365 which is by 25 247 it’s brilliant I agree um that also might be helpful um if you want to take advantage of any of those things um to if that’s helpful for
You do check it out and uh also you might be thinking as you are reflecting what can I get involved with not just in terms of teams but how can I make prayer Central to what I do in this coming year and I just love to see our prayer room booked out
We’ve got a great team developing plans there so check out the website uh the prayer room is open when the building is open so Cafe so check that out online and book in your slot and there are activities often in there that will just help you pray if you’re new to prayer um
It’s just a great way to curve out time in our busy lives to be with God or come and join us at 7:30 on a Tuesday morning to pray together for the church for rexam for Wales and have breakfast with us but things are currently on pause
While the holidays carry on so our next prayer uh meeting will be on the 16th of January brilliant we’ve also got coming up uh not only how you can develop in your relationship with God but actually what about your relationships with other people those closest to you we’re going

Um and for the next 10 minutes or so I’m going to try and uh speak into a little bit this moment that we St we sit in uh just heading into a new calendar year um 2024 I don’t know what 2023 has been like to you uh for you but um yeah I
Wish you all the best for the for the next year ahead um it’s great to have everyone in with us today don’t worry about if your kids are making noise it’s um it’s going to be great for next 10 minutes or so uh and um I hope they’re
Having a lot of fun it’s brilliant to have so many so many around today um so I wanted to speak just on this little bit from uh the the letter from uh the disciple John one of the three of jesus’ closest followers one John Chapter 2 uh you can find it on verse
12 25 1,225 in these uh kind of blue and green Bibles that are around but it will also come up on the screen and it’s this little uh kind of song I guess that John has in the midst of his writing starting at verse 12 but before I do we’re going
To pray Lord I Thank you for the gifts that have been given today Lord and all that you have provided this year God um for for the life and work of of what we do here Lord to serve you and to be your hands and your feet we Bess We Praise
You Lord we bless you for you are faithful to us and we ask Lord that you would come and speak to us now as we open your word amen starting at verse 12 I am writing to you dear children because your sins have been forgiven on account of his
Name I am writing to you fathers and we could say mothers as well because you know him who is from the beginning I’m writing to you young men and young women because you have overcome the evil one I write to you dear children because you know the father I write to you fathers
And mothers because you know who him who is from the beginning I write to you young men and young women because you are strong and the word of God lives in you and you have overcome the evil one John speaking into the journey that we go on in our Christian walk and I’m
Going to talk about some of that today but when I was 11 a school friend and I got dressed up in the best cycling gear that we had which wasn’t great and uh took part in a sponsored charity bike ride across Kent uh it was a great
Achievement uh and in the weeks that followed as you do I I went around with my little sort of Flora uh plastic tub and collected the sponsorship money from those that had sponsored me uh and and uh and a few weeks later after that I think after my mom had probably nagged
Me a few times I went to find the money and pay it into the bank and donate it to the charity that we’d been doing in aidol but I couldn’t find it and uh I the only person that I could see who’d been in my room where I thought this
Money was kept was my best friend at the time called Ben and uh as I fruitlessly searched under the piles of clothes and various other things that were probably in my teenage room uh I I became more and more convinced that the only possible logical explanation was that my
Best friend was a thief and had taken it and uh uh to the point that during a phone conversation I began to like just gently question did he did he had he seen where this might be thinking naive as I was that of course he wouldn’t
Think I was accusing him of stealing uh now uh a few days later I found the money in my Destro and uh and I felt pretty bad about it and it wasn’t it was only like a year a couple of years ago that Ben actually mentioned it to me
Again and said you didn’t know that it sounded like you were accusing me of stealing it um I quite embarrassed about that moment and and as we look back at our childhood all sorts of things that we’re embarrassed about that we did as children uh you know times when I’m ate
So much that I made myself sick times that um you know hair and clothing disasters that we may have done arguments I might have had with my siblings we probably all got those things things that happened in our childhood that we’d rather leave there and we don’t want to take with us
Actions that that we don’t want to repeat as an adult you know as from what I know now about being a parent the aim is to develop healthy independent confident adults of our children there’s things you do as a child that are just plain stupid foolish that you don’t want to take into
Adulthood and the Bible uses this picture of like physical development of a child to describe the kind of Spiritual Development that actually we’re meant to go through through in our walk as Christians like the great news of the Gospel is that God doesn’t leave
Us as he finds us he accepts us as we are but he wants to he wants to take you and transform you into a new creation and that is a process the book of Hebrews talks about going from relying on relying on milk like an infant does
To solid food like there’ll be things that as when you first become a Christian like you might just go back to the things that you did before the stuff that you find yourself in you think goodness me why am I back here again and God’s grace covers it all and we never
Get away from the place of needing God’s grace and yet his will for us is that we would grow beyond that point into what the writer of Hebrews describes as solid food The Riches of knowing god and you know when when we have a chance
To look back as we do at this kind of moment entering a new year as Christians we should be able to look back and say you know what praise God I’m not the person that I used to be I’m not the person yet that I want to be or that God
Has in in store for me but I’m not what I was and I’m sure that all of us today like God would want to say well done can you see what I’ve done in your life this year and maybe one of the things as we enter this new year to take a
Moment at somay just to think back and think this is the way that I’ve changed this year this is the way that God has done something in me I want to grow up before I grow old as somebody has said and the destination as we saw in In this
Passage it says I write to you fathers and mothers in other words those that are older in the faith because you know him who is from the beginning that is the destination to know God this letter was written by John one of jesus’ closest Companions and we can see from
His gospel a few things about him first of all he had a temper him and his brother were called the sons of thunder and there’s a reason for that he was exceedingly competitive you know he writes at the end of John’s gospel that uh Jesus did
Many more things the needes and were I to write them down there would not be enough pages in the whole world in other words I haven’t got enough paper to write all this stuff down on and yet he finds space to write that when he went to the empty tune
Him and Peter were both running but he outran Peter it’s useful information John he comes across as a bit of a argumentative competitive maybe proud man and yet when he comes to write it all down later on in his life he just describes himself in his gospel as the
Disciple whom Jesus loved not in a bigheaded way but basically saying God you know what all that people need to know about me the only thing that’s worth knowing about me is that I was known by Jesus and he loved me you know um growth requires effort I
Used to maybe think that something of the transformation that God wanted to do was kind of we just let God do it let go and let God but I actually think more and more that it’s a it’s a process of cooperation like this picture of a pair
Of scissors like the way that a pair of scissors works is it there needs to be two forces pushing up and down to to to cut along a piece of that’s my pair of Scissors by the way to cut along a piece of cut along a piece of whatever it is
And imagine that one of those is the Holy Spirit and the other one is our effort to actually make progress we need two forces at work at the same time we cooperate with God and you know at this time of year as we make New Year’s resolutions there is
A danger that uh that there’s a kind of training that we get ourselves into where actually all becomes about me that there’s a kind of legalism and even sort of ID around the whole area of um self-improvement and self- fulfillment and self-care which our culture is
Actually a bit sick with like you know the thing of idolatry is not that that the thing is necessarily bad in itself but it’s when it gets put on the throne in place of God and as we make our New Year’s resolutions it can be easy to become
Deceived when we come at it from the perspective itive of reducing everything to the end point of of me and my desires the way we can get Beyond this is to begin with knowing Jesus Jesus I want to know you this year and I want whatever happens and
Whatever change happens in my life to have a through flow into your kingdom and your purposes because that’s the way that God wants to use us that’s the way that God wants to act in us the change that he wants to bring in US is not an
End in itself although he’s preparing us to reign with him in eternity but he has purposes for us in the world it’s a bit like the Dead Sea you know everything flows into the Dead Sea but it’s dead nothing lives in it because the salt flows in but it doesn’t flow back out
Again there’s no river that it flows back out of at the other end and it’s becomes saltier and saltier and nothing can live it’s a picture you know for us God’s love flows into us but it’s got to flow out of us as well so going back to this
Passage three things it says I’m holding four fingers up three three things it says um about how we might go about this process of of knowing him that is from the beginning how do we grow firstly it says young men and women um I write to you because you are strong
Say three things someone that you were called to become secondly something you are called to build and thirdly a battle you are called to win so firstly someone you are called to become I write to you because you are strong we are called to become people of strength strength of
Moral character strength and courage time and time again in the Bible we are urged to be strong Ephesians 6 um says be strong in the Lord and put on the full armor of God it goes back to that image of of the people of God um Israel
Going into the promised land and they told to do not be afraid and do not be discouraged elsewhere they’re told to be strong and very courageous Psalm 27:14 says wait for the Lord be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord just felt as I was reading that
Passage today that verse that that is what God wants to say to many of us today perhaps you’re as as you sit on the precipice of 2024 you just feel overwhelmed by all it holds wait for the Lord be strong and take heart in this moment and wait for
Him perhaps some some of it isn’t yours to do or solve perhaps you need to ask for help but also God wants to give you courage and strength because the strength that we go in is not our own it’s his but it still requires a decision it still requires
Courage you know following Jesus requires courage and strength often we have to risk rejection by speaking up and inviting a friend or colleague to something or to tell them our story about what God has done in our lives and what the change Jesus has brought in US requires courage to stand against
Injustice to reach out in compassion to call out dishonesty at work to love those that others despise but John writes you are strong he’s saying this to everybody who’s received this letter you are strong and I think I’d want to say today you are stronger than you think because you are in
Jesus that Greek word for strong is skus is is the same word used by John the Baptist uh in the gospels to describe Jesus the one who comes after me who is greater stronger mightier than I the thongs of whose sandals I’m not worthy to tie
How do we grow in such a characteristic how do we develop any characteristic in us how do we develop and train for anything you know those of you who are making decisions around maybe your physical health in this moment like I probably try to do every year at this
Point um we know to get physically fit starts with a decision doesn’t it you got to get up off the couch you got to get on some trainers you got to get out on that first run or whatever it is but then the decision needs to have a pattern of
Discipline if it’s going to continue to become a habit decision has to lead to discipline to go to do it again and again apparently it takes six weeks to form a habit and at some point though the discipline has to lead to desire like our change our desire has change you
Might suddenly find yourself not craving sugar um at all moments but actually uh craving something that’s going to be better for you water and sleep and things like that and eventually when our desires change it leads into this change that we are longing for this destiny that we are longing for
Decision leads to this discipline discipline leads to desire desire leads to Destiny and to be courageous it starts with a decision and then it continues with a discipline and so on and the motivation to face fears and difficulty and persevere is Jesus is Love and gratitude
For what he has done in my life so firstly is someone you are to be become you called to become strong secondly something you are called to build John says uh to to the young men and women the word of God lives in you you called to build a
Deposit of the word of God like this picture of like sewing into a cloud in that’s in you that you can draw down on knowing knowing the word of God knowing this book because there’s an exchange that takes place like with Jesus The Living Word we find
Jesus in the pages of this book it’s his book he is the word of God that became flesh and this is the word of God so as we um dwell ourselves in this book and the words of this book richly we find Jesus there and he dwells in US and becomes the Living
Word Hebrews 4:12 says uh the word of God is living and active sharper than any double-edged sword it penetrates even to dividing Soul and Spirit joints and Marrow it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart everything is uncovered and laid bare when the word of God dwells in us this kind of
Transformation takes place and it looks like a kind of sorting of our inner lives the word of God living in US holds up a mirror to our inner life we find ourselves recognizing things that don’t match up to God’s plan for our Our Lives we bring that Victory into our lives
Jesus asks us to pray um let your kingdom come let your will will be done on Earth as it is in heaven and and so on uh and Deliver Us from Evil Deliver Us from the evil one keep us from Temptation Deliver Us from the evil one you know you might not win
Every battle in your life the Christian life is not one long road of success of work promotions of trouble-free relationships but Jesus has defeated Eed the devil and gives us what we need to resist the devil and his plans and flee from Temptation This is a key way in
Which we step into the transformation into a new creation that God has for us becoming a new woman and a new or a new man a kind of Victory a Breaking Free from those cycles of sin and destructive habits and then going back to kind of repent Ing and then sinning again that
Can just leave us going around in circles I don’t know what it might be for you maybe it’s finding yourself just gossiping and it’s just divisive in in some way maybe it’s um I don’t know maybe it’s maybe it’s thought patterns of Despair that you find yourself in they just robbing you of
Life as we um as as we pray as we invite God’s spirit into our lives as we dwell in the word as we um as we stand in the strength that God has given us he wants to move you on from those patterns this year you know you may be sitting on the
Edge of 2024 remembering all of those ideas at the start of this decade who remembers 2020 Vision back before the pandemic and thinking there’s so much to catch up on where where did those four where did those four years go thinking there’s so much to achieve being full of vision and that’s
Brilliant you might be sitting on the edge of this year feeling like the biggest failure and whichever one of those you might feel like I’d love to encourage you to get to know God this year make that your goal grow in strength and moral character allow God’s word to nourish
And live in you and face the battle with the Enemy and in in the strength of Jesus Victory in Jesus name amen Why Don’t We Stand and we are going to pray and Lord we thank you for everything that you have have done in our lives and in this church in
2023 and Lord as we look ahead to the year that’s coming we just offer it to you Lord and we ask as we prayed earlier that your kingdom would come Lord that this would be a a year where your kingdom is Advanced where people come to know you in Greater
Measure Lord we ask that you would strengthen each of of us you would give us strength and moral courage Lord to stand to be faithful to you to face the battles that are and the challenges that are ahead of us in your Victory to flee from sin and Temptation
And the things that Rob us in our lives I ask Lord that you would come and Empower us now Holy Spirit you might want to just hold out your hands as if you’re receiving a gift just to say yes Lord I want your spirit now to empower
Me and those verse those verses from Psalm 27 wait for the Lord be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord L we wait for you and just as you are waiting on the Lord right now there are going to be various things that have been spoken through this service and now
Is just a really good time to draw a line in the sand if you need to do that and it might be that you’re here this morning and that that word that Andy spoke earlier about hearing that well done I just want you to take a
Moment to take that to heart that the father says well done for you to hear that it might be from that verse from Hebrews where he encourages us to throw off the the sin that entangles and the things that weigh us down it might be that you’re like I want to run this
Race so just take that pause for a moment right now and say God I’m in maybe put your hand on your heart if that is something that you’re kind of dealing with with God right now say God I’m in God I’m in I’m going to start this New Year with a clean
Slate and know that you are right there with me so father I pray by your spirit you just breathe on each one now that is just drawing that Line in the Sand and laying themselves down before you again in Jesus name thank you Jesus thank you
Jesus and I wonder whether for some as you look ahead to the next year you know already that there’s battles that you’re facing that are bigger than the battles that it feels like youve faced in life up till now and there’s real fear there and you’re saying God help me to be strong
I pray Lord now for just new courage to face those battles it’s with health or finances or family relationships we’re just going to worship for a little while before we Close And I Want Iain control I want more of you God I want more of you God s down in my soul that I can’t control I want more of you God I want more of you God no place I would rather be no place I would ra
