A hostel in Sydney was evacuated following a fire, caused by an e-bike battery.

One of the individuals suffered burns to the leg, but both escaped with their lives as the battery ignited.

  1. Tips for lithium batteries:
    Never charge when still hot from use.
    If they're drained too much, do not try workarounds to bypass battery protection to charge them. Drained batteries act like a resistor and will heat up until they may explode.
    Never charge indoors.
    Buy a "battery can" to charge in. This is a steel box with a hole for the charging cable and a hole with a fireproof filter on it. If the battery explodes the can controls the flames and catches some of the smoke.
    The smoke is EXTREMELY toxic.
