This past July I rode a short gravel loop through the headwaters region of the Wynoochee River in the Olympic National Forest. Temperatures were expected to be in the 90’s and I soon found myself sweating profusely as I climbed the steep forest road.
With the steepest grade coming in at 20.9%, I had some quality hike-a-bike time huffing and puffing up a road that was so loose and chunky in places it looked like a rock slide.
As I reached the top I wondered how rough the descent would be. Turned out it was almost as steep as the climb but the road surface was much better. The descent also had the added bonus of lots of shade and some nice waterfalls.
19.2 miles and 3170′ of elevation.
