It’s a storm. My left thigh also hurts a bit. Wow, it’s really cold outside, isn’t it? Yes. I was just at the bakery and it’s just so cold… I’m a bit worried about our winter bikepacking tour

That when we get up early on the second day it’ll just be so cold and it will be super hard to get out of our sleeping bags. Hello hello [Nick speaks Saxon] And welcome from Saxony. Sandra: That’s right, we are in Leipzig.

Nick: I can speak more Saxon here – no one can understand it. By the way, speaking Saxon works best if you push your lower jaw forward correctly. No, back to business and standard German. hello Hi, we are currently in Leipzig. We arrived here yesterday evening.

We went on a bikepacking tour, it’s just before Christmas. Our goal was to ride from Munich to Leipzig: 500 km, 5000 meters of altitude and 2 days. This was definitely an ambitious plan and we failed miserably. Well, not quite. We tried it. And took a train at the end for good reason.

But let’s start with the positive things: we didn’t have any defects. 50 minutes on the road and you have to adjust the shifting. Can you think of anything else? We made good decisions. Yes, we were in a hotel and we took a train

Instead of sleeping outside in a hut and instead of being hit by falling trees in a storm. The water also ran really well into the shoes. At least in yours. What went wrong? Sandra: a lot of things Nick: everything else We wanted to start early in the morning, and that worked really well.

First, Nick had to pack his stuff because we made the final preparations for moving to another apartment until extremely late the evening before. We’re moving to Munich. Then we just fell asleep and decided, okay, we’ll pack tomorrow I had already packed, Nick would pack in the morning.

Then we were just ready to leave, went to the train, we wanted to skip a few kilometers and take the train to Freising. On the way to the train I realized: I had forgotten my helmet. So I went back and we took one train later, wasting another 20 minutes.

We are now in Freising at the train station and are leaving straight away. Today we have 225 km on our plan, it’s just before 12. We started in Freising in a light drizzle, but then it stopped quite quickly and we even had quite a few kilometers in the sun,

Blue sky, sunshine and it was dry – from above. We really didn’t expect that. Yes. After the last few days have been so stressful with painting the apartment, packing boxes, all sorts of things, I’m now noticing how all this tension is easing a bit

And with that comes the tiredness, I’m just getting really tired. We planned our route as a mix of asphalt and gravel because it’s always a little warmer on gravel because you have to use your whole body… Hello, I’m a tractor! WT*%&$§(/( Oops, that was a bit greasy, I slipped a bit.

Not the best way here. It’s slippery. But at least the light is nice – at least through my glasses. and because less airstream because you move more slowly. We were just down on the Danube for a short time and it was really muddy because there was flood there recently.

That was Weltenburg. Unfortunately we had to reschedule our tour here in advance because you have to take the ferry and unfortunately it only runs until October. Sandra’s tip for eating these hazelnut butter squashes: place them on the handlebars and press them until 2, 3, 4 cm of sausage comes out.

That’s what we’re doing now. Probably the steepest street in Kehlheim and of course we ride there, well planned. As you can see, it’s already really dark, but it’s not that late: 5:20 p.m. Unfortunately, I lost this cool Christmas ball somewhere just before Amberg.

I hope someone finds it and is really happy about it. But we’ve been riding in the dark for about 40 minutes. Short stop at EDEKA and the bakery. Now we have a supermarket stop. And we have to hurry because they’re closing soon. Yes, we still have 20 minutes until they close.

So we eat something quickly and then continue on in the dark. Our meal break is over, fingers are a bit cold now. The whole body is cold. What? The whole body is cold, well, then the whole body. Exactly, and now let’s move on.

Actually, on the first day we only had rain for the last two hours, by then it was already dark. We rode a really strenuous old railway cycle path that was always slightly uphill and alternated between short pieces of asphalt and very muddy long gravel passages

And it was just so tiring to ride along because I was really already knocked out and just wanted to arrive. Wherever… we didn’t even know where we were sleeping. That’s right. We then decided or actually found a hotel in Amberg that was still open and where you could check in after 8 p.m.

Because it was already 8 p.m. or something. The bike stable, that’s great. We’re in the hotel room now, I’m brushing my teeth… yes, it was hard and we were really tired so we couldn’t go any further. Good morning. It’s now just after 6:30 a.m. and we’re quickly going to breakfast then

Venture on the last 261 km. Yes, tired, my butt hurts, Nick’s legs hurt, let’s see what happens today. We had breakfast and have now packed everything up again. Let’s see when we can manage to sit on the bike now it’s 7:34 a.m. I would guess at 8

A.m. We were on the bike at 8 a.m. sharp, rode for a minute and then decided to put on the rain pants. We went out very optimistic but then very quickly realized that the rain pants were the better option. But then we’re finally getting going.

We’ve now covered the first 15 km, it’s a bit of a constant up and down – just like yesterday. I’m just incredibly warm, I think I’m wetter under the rain jacket than on the outside simply because I sweat so much. That’s why I ride a little slower because it’s really not comfortable.

My left thigh also hurts a bit, somehow a muscle pain. I can’t really push the pedals. But well, I can’t currently anyway. Sandra is rolling somewhere in front, now she’s already reached the descent. First stop! Everything is wet! Discreet.

Hot chocolate, hot chocolate, golden milk, Nick and tea – and here comes the tarte flambée. Now put the wet shoes back on and the rain pants, which are also wet inside, ugh. Do you see the trees shaking? There are reports of squalls…

So in moments like this I think about myself: I’m the weakest person on earth, sort of, because I keep thinking about where is a train station from where a train leaves? Yes, it is very difficult. Rain… and more rain and a bit of wind too.

At some point the things got soaked, the water ran into my shoes, Nick’s rain jacket was no longer waterproof, Nick’s gloves bent around 1 kilo each because there was so much water in them. It lasted until midday, so it was closed for a good four hours, then no more.

There was also this storm warning. We didn’t actually notice much of it until sometime after midday. Pretty much at the same time we somehow had the thought that maybe we should bite the bullet and go to the nearest train station. Nick then brought it up and we stopped at the bus stop to

Check our options. Now we’re standing here in a bus stop and watching how we’re going to get to Leipzig by train because it’s a storm and we’re wet to the bone, I would say not just to the skin I’m missing my rubber gloves from Bright Midnight.

10 km to the train station, federal road where you can drive 100. Wow! Is there any other way to get there? And then the storm started straight away. The last 11 km to the train station weren’t so cool. We came to the train station in snaking lines.

Yes, strong squalls, small falling branches flying around, the rain was flying horizontally. Just so you can see how much it rains here, everything is under water. Going to the train was definitely the right thing to do. Yes, we noticed that on the way to Leipzig by Train.

We were driving out of a train station, then it really stormed and there was lightning outside. So it was definitely the right decision and we were really happy to have arrived here in Leipzig and to be warm again and then have a shower later and pizza!

And pizza, it’s pizza for dinner, that’s right. Bye! Bye until next time.

Bayerisch is ooch nich besser als Säggsisch. Liebe Grüße🙋‍♀

  6. Great year of bike adventures for you guys; hope 2024 brings you many more.
