My 8 year old son has been on an REI kid’s Co-op Rev 20 bike for a while and it’s way too small for him now. He’s 58″ tall and which feet spread, ground to top of inseam is 25″-26″.
He’s ready for gears and a front brake, certainly.
A couple years ago, I got the recommendation here for my wife and I for Townie 7 bikes. Those have been great but I want something more aggressive for my son. We go around the neighborhoods and light trails and the Townie just won’t cut it for him on the trails.
Ideally, ~$500 would be great but I know that’s a stretch especially since I don’t think it would be worthwhile to get him another “kids” bike. While I’d love to grab him one for Christmas, totally ok if I get recommendations for that price range that would mean having to wait to find a good sale or used version.
I saw this one: https://www.rei.com/product/212692/gt-275-avalanche-sport-mountain-bike-2021 but I’m worried that ‘XS’ size would be problematic after he grows a bit despite the 24″ tires.
