ℹ A Class 166 Turbo, operated by Great Western Railway on a Worcester to Bristol regional service, passes by getting ready to stop at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury – the barriers then stay lowered for a CrossCountry Class 170 speeding north from Cardiff to Nottingham. As usual for a half-barrier crossing with this type of alarm, the alarm tempo speeds up after the first train and an intermittent spoken warning (“Warning! Another train is approaching!”) begins to play. Northway is a parish located in the Ashchurch/Tewkesbury area, and indeed the station that serves both these places is not far to the south from here. This is one of those crossings where I don’t 100% agree with the name choice, but there isn’t a more sensible one I can give it. Although neither of them still have their serial number plates on them, I get the feeling that the barriers here are Smiths and over 25 years old. Because you seem to only be able to travel directly between Worcestershire Parkway and Ashchurch for Tewkesbury in the peak time, I had to cycle here all the way from Wadborough. I didn’t stay here for very long because after the hour-long cycle ride here from the Pirton/Sidings Road crossing (and the lack of a proper breakfast in the morning!) I was particularly ravenous and eager to stop by somewhere with food.
